  • Hersey turns back Wheeling’s spirited charge Feb 19, 2015 11:11 PM
Wheeling’s girls basketball team came in believing. And in the fourth quarter, as they chipped away at a 15-point deficit, the No. 6-seeded Wildcats had about everyone else believing. Third-seeded Hersey saw its lead shrink to 2 points with 26 seconds left when Wheeling’s Deanna Kuzmanic completed a 3-point play to make it 54-52. But as they have nearly all season, the Huskies rose to the occasion on Thursday night. Sophomore Claire Gritt (team-high 24 points) and junior Maggie Berigan (9 points) each converted a pair of pressure free throws to hold off their Mid-Suburban East rivals 58-52 in the championship game of the Class 4A Grayslake Central regional.

  • Kuzmanic, Wheeling stop Warren Feb 17, 2015 11:11 PM
As Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz stood in Grayslake Central’s near-empty gym, he heard laughter from his girls basketball players coming from the hallway as they exited the building. Never mind that Wheeling’s experienced squad had just beaten Warren’s young Blue Devils 53-39 in a Class 4A regional semifinal. “Listen to them,” said Stanczykiewicz, grinning. “That’s the beauty of this team. They’re just so much fun and they’re together.” Something else Stanczykiewicz appreciated Tuesday night? The final game of Deanna Kuzmanic’s career, at least against his team. “You know what the great thing about Deanna Kuzmanic is?” Stanczykiewicz said after the senior guard rang up a game-high 20 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. “There’s no drama there. There’s no attitude. There’s no ‘Hey, look at me.’ There’s no grandstanding. She takes her knocks — she takes her physical play. You don’t see her crying. “To me,” Stanczykiewicz added, “that’s the beauty of Deanna Kuzmanic. I hope that’s what kids watch, too. It’s not just the skill set. It’s the attitude. If you’re going to lose, you don’t mind losing to people like that.”

That netted Zuubayan a third consecutive trip downstate. • Mundelein’s Kehr comes through, wins parallel bars Feb 9, 2015 11:14 PM
McKenzie Kehr had a painful memory from a year ago, one that spoiled her chance at a spot in the state meet. The Mundelein senior wasn’t going to let history repeat in Monday night’s Mundelein girls gymnastics sectional. So, Kehr, as the final performer on the uneven parallel bars, chalked up the best routine of the meet, a 9.45 that qualified her to the state meet at Palatine on Feb. 20. “I really didn’t want a repeat of last year,” Kehr said. “I just gave it my all. I actually tore my fingernail off in the middle of it and kind of stopped. This time, I was luckier. I was just pumped up with the team and wanted to make it there (to state), with the team.” Kehr was the runner-up in the all-around at 37.325 in addition to taking second on vault (9.55) and fifth on beam (8.925). As a team, Mundelein will have to wait and see if it will quality to state with an at-large berth, as the Mustangs finished behind sectional champion Glenbrook South (142.625). • Standout efforts from Stevenson, Barrington’s Tenyer Feb 7, 2015 7:51 PM
Stevenson senior Sam Szura, a competitor since her freshman season, called her four seasons of participation in varsity girls bowling “a real trip.” “We started at the bottom and worked our way up, that’s for sure,” said Szura. “That’s why I’m so ecstatic right now. I’m crying.” The tears that Szura and her teammates were shedding Saturday were tears of joy as the Patriots surprised by winning the Palatine Regional at Brunswick Zone in Deer Park. “We expected to advance,” said Szura, “but we never expected to win the regional. I was nervous all day — I’m kind of a worry-wart — but in the end we were able to pull through, and I’m thrilled that we did.” Stevenson’s pinfall of 5,515 was a whopping 120 pins better than second-place Hoffman Estates (5,358), and both teams will advance to Saturday’s sectional tourney hosted by Rolling Meadows.
