  • Kuzmanic’s big effort lifts Wheeling Jan 7, 2015 12:23 AM
    For the fourth straight game and ninth of the season, Deanna Kuzmanic scored in the 20s and the Wildcats won their sixth straight with a 46-36 victory at Barrington. The senior guard poured in a game-high 24 points including two 3-pointers as Wheeling improved to 12-4 with the Mid-Suburban League crossover victory.

    St. Viator’s Michael Balcerak added to an already impressive freshman season, winning the 100-yard freestyle against host Wheeling on Monday night in a time that broke a Lions program record more than 30 years old. Balcerak won the 100 in 47.50, breaking the mark of 47.57 set by Mike O’Hare in 1983.

    The recipe for success for the Wheeling girls basketball team might involve only one step on most nights. “Just add water,” Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz said with a laugh. “That’s all you need with (Deanna) Kuzmanic. She’s instant offense. She might be the best player we’ve faced all year. “(Kuzmanic) affects the game in so many ways. She creates good space to get her shot off. She never takes a bad shot. And she looks for her teammates incredibly well.” Kuzmanic, who will play college basketball next year at Division I Alabama-Birmingham, was the perfect blend of scorer and facilitator for Wheeling on Saturday night in the championship game of the Warren Blue Devil Classic. The 5-foot-9 senior guard scored 28 points on 7 three-pointers and dished out 7 assists to lead Wheeling to a breezy 69-38 victory over Warren.

    Senior Kyle Beyak made five 3s and shot 6-for-6 from the foul line to help Prospect wrap a fifth-place finish and a 3-1 Wheeling Hardwood Classic tournament record with a 59-55 victory over Libertyville on Saturday. Beyak finished with a game-high 23 points. Frankie Mack had 10 points for the Knights, and Ernest Kiseliovas had a pair of 3-pointers.

    Hersey coach Mary Fendley could not recall in her 16 seasons losing two prominent players to injury (senior captains Annie Korff and Juliette Vainisi) during the same week. First, Vainisi suffered a dislocated elbow at practice and then Korff went out of Friday’s Wheaton North tournament game early in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury ankle. The young Huskies still got the result they were after, a 47-39 victory over Glenbard South.

    For nearly a decade a Kuzmanic has visited Warren to play basketball for Wheeling in the annual Blue Devil Classic. That impressive run ends this weekend. “Hopefully I’ll come back and watch,” said Deanna Kuzmanic, who next year will be playing for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The sister of former Wheeling stars Stephanie and Kellie and the youngest child, Deanna put on a “Kuzmanic Classic,” so to speak, in Tuesday’s Classic contest against Grayslake Central. Her 24 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots led Wheeling to a 61-38 victory, keeping the Wildcats’ undefeated record in the tournament intact.

     
  • Winning start for Naperville Central Dec 22, 2014 10:40 PM
    Over the past three years, Naperville Central’s boys basketball team has grown accustomed to going home with some hardware at the Wheeling Hardwood Classic. The Redhawks took away third-place trophies the past two season, and in 2011 they walked away with the championship. This year’s edition started off on the right foot in the 37th annual tournament, as Naperville Central ousted the host Wildcats 54-39 Monday night.

     
  • Fremd wins divisional title in Arizona Dec 23, 2014 12:12 AM
    The Mid-Suburban League’s first girls basketball team to board an airplane for competition will be returning home in high spirits. Fremd won the third-place game of the Vesper Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions on Monday in Phoenix, Ariz. The Vikings (13-2) topped McClatchy High School (Ca.) 65-38.

     
  • Kuzmanic takes center stage in Wheeling’s win Dec 20, 2014 11:19 PM
    Bob and Teresa Kuzmanic have been visiting Gurnee at this time of the year for the last nine years. That’s because they’ve always had at least one daughter playing for Wheeling’s girls basketball team in the Blue Devil Classic at Warren High School.Youngest daughter Deanna is closing out the long run of Kuzmanics playing in the Christmas tourney. The Alabama-Birmingham recruit and Wildcats started out this year’s Classic with 31 points in the first quarter en route to a 63-41 victory over Phillips.

     
  • Wheeling scores second-place Erb finish Dec 20, 2014 6:13 PM
    With Metea Valley holding a commanding 44-point lead heading into the final round, the closest battle was going to be for second place Saturday at the 51st Annual Rus Erb Wrestling Tournament. The Mustangs rolled to the championship of the powerful 17-team tourney at Glenbrook South with 200.5 points. And Wheeling came through when the chips were down as the Wildcats overcame Oswego 141 to 138.5 to take home the runner-up trophy. Carmel Catholic wound up placing sixth with 119 points as the Corsairs had a very strong showing with four wrestlers reaching the championship match.

    Prospect’s perfect girls basketball season continued on Friday night as the Knights captured a 44-33 victory on the road at Wheeling. Senior Taylor Will led all scorers with 20 points while classmate Catherine Sherwood chipped in 13 and junior Nikki Matters 10.

     
  • Wheeling, Carmel send four to Erb semifinals Dec 19, 2014 9:23 PM
    The going was pretty tough for area wrestlers Friday night in the opening day of the 51st Annual Rus Erb Tournament at Glenbrook South. Heading into the semifinals which begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Metea Valley has established itself as the early favorites to capture the championship of the rugged 17-team tourney. The Mustangs lead with 82 points while Oswego is in second place with 68. Wheeling put together a good first day with four semifinalists for fourth place currently (56 points) while fifth-place Evanston (54 points) is right on the Wildcats’ heels. Carmel Catholic also had a good first day, with four wrestlers reaching the semifinals, but the Corsairs are only in eighth place right now with 46 points due to a lack of depth up and down their lineup.

     
  • Toughness, finesse carry Prospect Dec 19, 2014 10:42 PM
    Prospect used some on-court toughness and some finesse in beating Wheeling 48-40 at the the Jean Walker Field House in Mt. Prospect on Friday night. The Knights’ Grant Miller, whose nickname is Bulldog, provided the toughness. And sophomore Frankie Mack had the finesse in the Mid-Suburban East victory.

     
  • Former teacher pleads guilty to obscenity Dec 19, 2014 4:40 PM
    A 30-year-old Palatine man who had worked as a physical education teacher at Wheeling High School, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor obscenity charge this month, court records show. in exchange for his guilty plea, Brian Rossetti was sentenced to 18 months supervision and ordered to pay $334 in fines.

     
  • Buffalo Grove’s Savage rolls 300 game Dec 17, 2014 9:52 PM
    In 40-plus years of Mid-Suburban League girls bowling, there had been only six 300 games thrown until the gem last week by Karsyn Burgess of Wheeling put the total at 7. Now, make it 8. Buffalo Grove junior Joanne Savage stole the spotlight Wednesday, firing her first-ever 300 in the second game of her match against, of all teams, the Wildcats.
