  • Will closer to record as Prospect rolls Dec 3, 2014 12:32 AM
Taylor Will scored a game-high 25 points on Tuesday night in Mt. Prospect to help lead Prospect to a 72-38 victory over visiting Schaumburg. Will, a senior guard headed to Brown University, closed to within 5 points of becoming the Knights’ all-time leading scorer in girls basketball history. She made 10 field goals (three 3-pointers) and 2 free throws on Tuesday at the Jean Walker Field House, named after the coach who was in charge when Colleen Grant set the school record of 1,352 points from 1977 to 1981.

  • Barrington off to a fine start Dec 2, 2014 10:31 PM
For Barrington’s girls gymnastics team, it was just a relatively low-key season opener — but the Fillies sure looked impressive. Barrington finished fourth at state last season, making its first appearance since 2003, and the host Fillies seem primed for another big run this year after opening with a 145.25-107.85 Mid-Suburban League crossover victory over Wheeling on Tuesday.

  • Strong start for new-look Hoffman Estates team Dec 1, 2014 9:10 PM
Hoffman Estates freshman Allura Magsino admitted that it was a little “nerve-wracking” going into her first Mid-Suburban League match. “But I really wasn’t that nervous,” said Magsino, “because I knew my team was there to support me.” And if there were any worries about how the freshman would perform under pressure, those doubts were dispelled Monday night at Arlington Lanes. Magsino fired a 204 in the first game en route to a 561 series as the Hawks defeated Hersey 2,697 pins to 2,604 in a matchup of what should be two of the MSL’s top teams this season.

  • Fate smiles on Maine West in tournament finale Nov 29, 2014 10:00 PM
Thirteen was hardly an unlucky number for a pair of Maine West freshmen on Saturday night. Allison Pearson and Jessica Riedl’s 13 points apiece helped lead the Warriors to their first win of the season on closing night of the Hoffman Estates girls basketball tournament. Hall of fame coach Derril Kipp watched his Warriors edge the host Hawks 53-52.

  • Barrington’s Jacobsen does it again; Fremd finishes sixth Nov 22, 2014 8:12 PM
Barrington junior Kirsten Jacobsen made a tactical adjustment in the championship heat of the 500-yard freestyle during Saturday’s girls swimming and diving finals at Evanston Township High School. The two-time defending champ had previously won by making her move relatively late in the race, pulling away decisively over the last handful of laps. This time, the race was essentially over as soon as it started. Jacobsen got separation immediately from the rest of the heat and comfortably protected her lead the whole way to win the event for a third straight time.

  • Another fluid performance for Wheeling Nov 22, 2014 12:29 AM
During a time out in Friday’s girls basketball game between Wheeling and Niles North, announcer Mike Burke informed the crowd of Wildcats senior Theresa Godlewski’s stellar ninth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle of the state swimming preliminaries earlier in the day. Meanwhile on the basketball floor, things could not have gone more swimmingly for the Wildcats. Even the bench made a big splash as coach Matt Weber watched his club lead nearly start to finish in 66-34 victory in an opening-round game of the Niles North Thanksgiving tournament.

  • Best-ever Fremd team looks forward to finals Nov 21, 2014 11:33 PM
In a big-picture sense, Fremd can certainly count itself as fortunate. After Friday’s girls swimming and diving state meet preliminaries at Evanston Township High School, the Vikings can look forward to all three relays scoring points in Saturday’s finals session. Grace Kneller and Erica King have earned individual point-scoring opportunities, as have senior divers Sydney Plichta and Sarah McTague. Some of the specifics, however, were not especially friendly to Fremd. “In swimming, 7 is not a particularly lucky number,” explained Fremd coach Andrew Kittrell. And that digit figured prominently in Fremd’s journey on Friday.

  • In Weber’s debut, Wheeling tops Maine South Nov 19, 2014 12:11 AM
Wheeling four-year varsity members Deanna Kuzmanic, Hailey Dammeier and Hannah Dobrowski began their senior years the same as the last three _ a season-opening date with Maine South. But there was a twist. For the first time, they were celebrating a victory over the girls from Park Ridge. Led by Kuzmanic’s 26 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists, the Wildcats wasted little time taking command before posting a 50-42 victory in the nonconference girls basketball home win.

  • Green means go: Fremd floors it at Stevenson Nov 15, 2014 8:38 PM
Those arriving promptly for the 1 p.m. start of the girls swimming sectional meet at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon were challenged by the volume of traffic around the school, as the Patriots were hosting a Class 8A playoff football which also featured a 1 p.m. kickoff. There was heavy traffic inside the natatorium, too — figuratively moving to the east, toward next weekend’s state championships at Evanston Township High School. Fremd was the most successful lane navigator. The Vikings won all three relays in pool-record times to win with an impressive 299.5 points, topping Barrington (221) and Stevenson (220.5) in the team race.
