  • Mundelein’s Kehr comes through, wins parallel bars Feb 9, 2015 11:14 PM
McKenzie Kehr had a painful memory from a year ago, one that spoiled her chance at a spot in the state meet. The Mundelein senior wasn’t going to let history repeat in Monday night’s Mundelein girls gymnastics sectional. So, Kehr, as the final performer on the uneven parallel bars, chalked up the best routine of the meet, a 9.45 that qualified her to the state meet at Palatine on Feb. 20. “I really didn’t want a repeat of last year,” Kehr said. “I just gave it my all. I actually tore my fingernail off in the middle of it and kind of stopped. This time, I was luckier. I was just pumped up with the team and wanted to make it there (to state), with the team.” Kehr was the runner-up in the all-around at 37.325 in addition to taking second on vault (9.55) and fifth on beam (8.925). As a team, Mundelein will have to wait and see if it will quality to state with an at-large berth, as the Mustangs finished behind sectional champion Glenbrook South (142.625). Mundelein (141.325) was second and Carmel Catholic third (141.125).

  • Standout efforts from Stevenson, Barrington’s Tenyer Feb 7, 2015 7:51 PM
Stevenson senior Sam Szura, a competitor since her freshman season, called her four seasons of participation in varsity girls bowling “a real trip.” “We started at the bottom and worked our way up, that’s for sure,” said Szura. “That’s why I’m so ecstatic right now. I’m crying.” The tears that Szura and her teammates were shedding Saturday were tears of joy as the Patriots surprised by winning the Palatine Regional at Brunswick Zone in Deer Park. “We expected to advance,” said Szura, “but we never expected to win the regional. I was nervous all day — I’m kind of a worry-wart — but in the end we were able to pull through, and I’m thrilled that we did.” Stevenson’s pinfall of 5,515 was a whopping 120 pins better than second-place Hoffman Estates (5,358), and both teams will advance to Saturday’s sectional tourney hosted by Rolling Meadows. Schaumburg (5,308) and Lake Zurich (5,288) will also move on to the sectional meet to be held at Brunswick in Mount Prospect, while the magical season of Barrington sophomore Sarah Tenyer continued in earnest. • Messer eager for a return engagement at Forest View Feb 5, 2015 4:07 PM
Hersey boys basketball coach Steve Messer has fond memories of the last time he was on the court at the old Forest View High School in 1985. Messer was senior at Hersey then. His Huskies had defeated Prospect in the sectional final in what was to be the last high school basketball game ever played at Forest View. The school closed later that year. “It all got started there,” Messer said. “Forest View was a great place to play and it was always the place they held the sectionals.” It will be the place again this Saturday, when District 214 wraps up the celebration of its Centennial with a full day high school basketball. All six schools in Dist. 214 will compete Saturday, with both the varisty girls and boys teams playing, with games beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the final game tipping off at 7:15 p.m.

Later on, when it mattered most, it was Hay’s own his team that couldn’t lose. Conant slowly erased a 26-point Broncos advantage, taking the lead for good with a nearly flawless finals performance to win the MSL tournament, and along with it a share of the overall conference title with Barrington. Prospect’s Olivia Gonzalez entered the Mid-Suburban League girls gymnastic meet as a wild card. The Knights senior left as an ace. Gonzalez, who has been dealing with a back injury for most of the season, certainly wasn’t affected by it on Friday night in rolling to the all-around title in tough field with a 37.60. “She dominated,” said Prospect coach Randy Smith of Gonzalez all-around effort. “She’s been dealing with back issues and it just shows what type of competitor she is.” Fremd may have not dominated, but the Vikings definitely did enough to get the job done, rolling to its 22nd MSL title with 146.15 points at Hersey’s Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.
