    It took overtime to decide, but Palatine’s girls water polo team is moving on. The No. 2 seed Pirates edged Fremd 10-9 after a third overtime period to earn a spot in Saturday’s sectional championship game against top seed Conant, scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.

    Defending Mid-Suburban East softball champion Buffalo Grove clinched at least a tie for another title on Wednesday with a 5-3 victory over visiting Elk Grove. The Bison (17-8, 11-3) won their tenth straight game as Julia Camardo (14-4) struck out seven, walked one and also won her tenth straight game.

    Conant’s softball team received 2-run homers from senior Rachel O’Malley in the first inning and sophomore Dream Aaron in the sixth en route to 9-1 victory on Tuesday over visiting Hoffman Estates.

    Erin Ward hit the first pitch of the game for a home run. In the second inning, she took it step better, belting a grand slam. Barrington’s senior shortstop ended up 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, 6 RBI and 3 runs as the Fillies blanked host Palatine 14-0 in the Mid-Suburban West softball game on Monday.

    Sophomore Alex Masnica capped off Elk Grove’s trio of home runs in a big way Saturday afternoon. After Becca Maher and Brooke Barges had already cleared the fence earlier in the game with solo blasts, Masnica walloped a 2-run walk-off homer to left center with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Grens a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader with visiting Elk Grove. Gina Cirrincione doubled to set up Masnica’s blast which gave pitcher Mary Hirschauer the complete game win that included 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. The Grenadiers went on to sweep the twin bill with a 13-2 five-inning victory as freshman Taylor Leach fired a 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk. She also belted a triple.

  • Big finish for Barrington May 10, 2014 12:26 AM
    Barrington closed in style on Friday at the Mid-Suburban League girls track meet. The Fillies capped things by taking first in the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay and to nail down their sixth MSL title with 140 points at Wheeling. Palatine finished second with 137.5 points, just ahead of defending champion Prospect (136).

  • Time for a Wheeling MSL water polo title May 8, 2014 10:37 PM
    In water polo, the Mid-Suburban West has decisively been the stronger of the league’s two divisions. Though a combined Prospect-Wheeling team did win an overall MSL title when those programs were still combining into one team, no single East Division school had ever won an overall conference crown in either gender. Somebody had to be first, and it turned out to be Wheeling. It was anything but easy, and Conant’s girls water polo team made sure of that in a nutty overtime game that finished 11-10 in favor of the Wildcats on Thursday at Conant.

    Defending Mid-Suburban East softball champion Buffalo Grove found itself back in first place on Wednesday after a 5-4 victory over Schaumburg, the second-place team in the MSL West. The host Bison (14-8) won the game in the bottom of the seventh on sophomore Emily Carnes’ walk-off double.

    Elk Grove senior Brooke Barges belted a homer and went 3-for-4 as the host Grenadiers topped Hersey 8-4 on Tuesday. Melissa Picchi (2-for-4) also had 3 RBI for the Grens, who improved to 20-3 and 7-2 in the Mid-Suburban East softball standings where they own a half-game lead over Buffalo Grove (13-8,7-3).

    Nathan Cooney knew that no matter what, he did not want his team in another extra inning battle. So the junior took matters into his own hands, pitching, hitting and running the Wildcats past Hersey 4-1 Monday in Arlington Heights.

    Barrington junior Keenan Dolezal tied her season-high of 14 strikeouts while tossing a 2-hitter in a 5-0 shutout over visiting Rolling Meadows on Monday at the Fields of Dreams.

  • Riedy, O’Brien power Palatine’s team-first relay win May 3, 2014 8:33 PM
    Junior Caitlin Riedy and sophomore Katie O’Brien came up big for Palatine’s girls track team on a sunny Saturday. The two combined to power the Pirates to the 82nd Palatine Relays title with 143 points at Chic Anderson Stadium. Barrington took second with 114 points, followed by Fremd (79 points), Lane (67), and Wheeling (65).

     
  • Wheeling High School to celebrate its many cultures May 2, 2014 2:40 PM
    Wheeling High school will celebrate its rich ethnic diversity with the 20th anniversary of Display of Cultures on Friday, May 23. This all-day event will provide parents and community members an opportunity to witness the rich diversity in the school.
