    The past few days had been rough for the Naperville North softbal team, with four consecutive losses, including defeats by Naperville Central and Glenbard North by just 2 runs. A trip to Benedictine University in Lisle for a game under the lights Thursday night was just what the Huskies needed. They belted out 12 hits and defeated Wheaton North 10-5.

  • Spagnola leads West Aurora to DVC crown May 9, 2014 12:15 AM
    Emma Spagnola authored the final pages to the most prolific individual career in the history of girls track and field in the DuPage Valley Conference. In the process the Minnesota-bound superstar propelled West Aurora to its third conference championship — in its last attempt — in the last six years Thursday night in Aurora. Spagnola became an individual quadruple-winner for the third time in the league, claiming varsity sweeps in the long jump and two hurdles events.

    There really was only one question looming before Wednesday’s Wheaton Warrenville South sectional: “Would David MacDonald be back?” The standout senior, who was injured in the same gym during the Donaldson Invite on April 19, looked like his old self as the two-time defending state champions rolled to a convincing victory, easily defeating runner-up Naperville Central, 158.1 to 141.8.

    Sometimes all it takes is getting past that one rough inning. For Wheaton North senior pitcher Ben Cary, it hit him in the very first frame of Saturday’s DuPage Valley Conference baseball game against Lake Park at Lisle’s Benedictine University. Once he got through that first inning, however, Cary was more than fine. Cary fired a 4-hitter as Wheaton North beat Lake Park 4-1 in the opening game of Saturday’s DVC doubleheader event designed to raise money for the ALS Association Greater Chicago Chapter. The two-day event featuring all eight DVC schools concluded with Glenbard North’s 6-1 victory over Glenbard East.

    Ethan Sansone has had a rather spectacular time in high school gymnastics. The Wheaton co-op senior added to his impressive four-year resume during Friday’s DuPage Valley Conference meet at Glenard North, winning five events, cruising to the all-around title and leading his team to another championship. Wheaton won handily with a 150.6 while runner-up Naperville Central scored a 137.1 and Naperville North was third with a 132.6.

  • Woman pleads guilty to stealing from booster club Apr 24, 2014 4:47 PM
    The former president of a Wheaton high school booster club pleaded guilty on Thursday to stealing more than $10,000 from the club. Dorothy “Dee” Horky, 58 of Carol Stream, entered the guilty plea more than a year after she was arrested on felony theft charges, according to a release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin.
