And when reliever Kyle Nielson caught the most dangerous base runner on the field straying off first base, the visiting Wildcats had picked up a much-welcomed win. Facing a good-hitting Grant team with the wind whipping toward the outfield fences on a blustery morning in Fox Lake, West Chicago appeared on the verge of winning in 5 innings before settling for a 9-5 win Tuesday.

Connolly, the former Wildcat standout who led the program to three DuPage Valley Conference and regional titles in her four years and is now playing at DePaul, may have graduated but Wildcats coach Kim Wallner wants everyone to know the program still expects to win. West Chicago did get a win in its first game of the 2012 season Thursday, but may have lost two starters for at least a while in the process.

    West Chicago smartly slowed the pace early, and threw a scare into Bartlett late. Beating the Hawks was another story. No. 1 seed and top-ranked Bartlett advanced to the round of 16 for the second time in three years, getting 23 points from Indiana-bound Haley Videckis to grind out a 52-46 win at Monday's Class 4A Hoffman Estates girls basketball sectional.

    Claire Monroe says she is just following in the footsteps of her older sister Kelsey. The West Chicago 5-foot-5 senior guard made her sibling proud on Thursday night in Hoffman Estates against No. 15 seeded Conant, which was hosting the Class 4A regional title game. Monroe tossed in game-high 19 points as West Chicago posted a 48-39 victory and captured its first regional title since Kelsey helped steer the Wildcats to one in 2007.

Tony Molinaro, one of three board members on the district’s negotiating team, said the two sides “are getting closer” to an agreement after nearly 11 months of talks. Union President Kristina Mallon agreed. “I think we’re very close,” she said Friday morning. “It’s just a matter of talking through the final issues.”
