    Tensions are mounting in West Chicago High School District 94 where tough contract battles are taking shape between the school board and unions representing both support staff and teachers. A federal mediator already has been called to assist in talks between the board and the Support Staff Association that began in February and ground to a halt in September over issues related to pay and health insurance.

    No one can dispute the opportunities Title IX has created for girls seeking to play high school sports. Their number has increased tenfold since the law was signed in 1972. But there's a catch. Title IX prohibits all schools that receive federal funds from discriminating on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity -- not just sports. Experts say science, technology, engineering and math classes are the new frontier for enforcement of the 40-year-old civil rights law.

  • West Chicago names first Hispanic mayor May 7, 2012 11:49 PM
    Ruben Pineda was only a baby when he arrived in West Chicago with his parents in the early 1960s. They were migrant workers from Texas who were looking for work, and here they found it, on the corn and bean fields of Illinois. Pineda, now 52, has never left the west suburban town. On Monday night, he officially became acting mayor, following the death of Mike Kwasman last month. Pineda becomes the first mayor of Hispanic descent in the 140-year history of West Chicago, where now just over half of the citys residents are Hispanic.

    The Elgin baseball team played its third straight errorless game Monday. Not coincidentally, the 6-3 nonconference victory over visiting West Chicago was its third straight. The Maroons (4-2) didnt just play adequate defense; they executed difficult double plays to quash threats in the third and fifth innings and frustrate the Wildcats (5-5).

Facing a good-hitting Grant team with the wind whipping toward the outfield fences on a blustery morning in Fox Lake, West Chicago appeared on the verge of winning in 5 innings before settling for a 9-5 win Tuesday.

    Just call it LAMC for West Chicagos softball team as in Life After Mary Connolly. Connolly, the former Wildcat standout who led the program to three DuPage Valley Conference and regional titles in her four years and is now playing at DePaul, may have graduated but Wildcats coach Kim Wallner wants everyone to know the program still expects to win. West Chicago did get a win in its first game of the 2012 season Thursday, but may have lost two starters for at least a while in the process.

    West Chicago smartly slowed the pace early, and threw a scare into Bartlett late. Beating the Hawks was another story. No. 1 seed and top-ranked Bartlett advanced to the round of 16 for the second time in three years, getting 23 points from Indiana-bound Haley Videckis to grind out a 52-46 win at Monday's Class 4A Hoffman Estates girls basketball sectional.

    Claire Monroe says she is just following in the footsteps of her older sister Kelsey. The West Chicago 5-foot-5 senior guard made her sibling proud on Thursday night in Hoffman Estates against No. 15 seeded Conant, which was hosting the Class 4A regional title game. Monroe tossed in game-high 19 points as West Chicago posted a 48-39 victory and captured its first regional title since Kelsey helped steer the Wildcats to one in 2007.

    Teachers and administrators at West Chicago’s Community High School have reached a tentative contract agreement after nearly 11 months of negotiations, a school board member said Monday. Tony Molinaro, who is one of three West Chicago High School District 94 board members serving on the district’s negotiating team, said the two sides reached consensus on “all open items” of the contract during a five-hour bargaining session that ended Sunday night.
