‘Small steps’ in West Chicago District 33 contract talks Nov 7, 2012 12:00 AM
Teachers are growing increasingly uneasy about the slow pace of contract talks in West Chicago Elementary District 33, the union's chief negotiator said. But school board President Christine Scheck said she's still optimistic about reaching an agreement with the Elementary Teachers Association of West Chicago. "It's slow but we're talking and to me that's such a plus," Scheck said Tuesday evening. "We're having some good conversations and there's a willingness to talk."

A federal mediator has been asked to help jump-start stalled teacher contract talks in West Chicago Elementary District 33 that have left "significant issues" unresolved, negotiators for both sides said Thursday. The school board and the Elementary Teachers Association of West Chicago asked for the mediator after they were unable to reach an agreement following nearly 12 months of negotiations, officials said.

West Chicago Elementary District 33 Superintendent Ed Leman says he must have walked right past the body of 22-year-old Miguel Quinones Tuesday on his way to West Chicago Middle School. Leman said he was meeting with the principal that morning and passed within 20 or 30 feet of the area where the body was discovered by a man at 11:27 a.m. on the eastern edge of the middle school property.

Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley has opened the city's famed Buckingham Fountain for the spring and summer seasons. Daley was at the more than 80-year-old fountain early Friday as the water started to flow. It's the last time he'll open the fountain. Daley is retiring this May after more than 20 years in office.
