  • South Elgin spoils West Aurora’s return to Upstate Eight Sep 13, 2014 12:03 AM
West Aurora needed only 5 plays to score its first touchdown in an Upstate Eight Conference football in 17 years Friday night. But not much else went according to plan for the Blackhawks against South Elgin in the schools’ Valley Division game in Aurora. South Elgin scored on all five of its first-half possessions and ultimately exploded for more than 600 yards of total offense in its 62-27 victory.

  • Practice pays for South Elgin Sep 9, 2014 9:27 PM
Of all the places for South Elgin’s girls volleyball team to right the ship, West Aurora was a fitting location. The Storm had just played a tournament over the weekend there that didn’t go so well. After a rigorous — and apparently quite effective — practice on Monday, South Elgin returned to West Aurora Tuesday for an Upstate Eight Conference Valley matchup. The Storm dominated both sets, using strong serving, solid play from their middles while capitalizing on plenty of West Aurora mistakes for a 25-15, 25-13 victory.

  • West Aurora falls short at Plainfield East Sep 7, 2014 9:18 PM
The West Aurora football team had one final chance at redemption after several missed scoring opportunities. But the Blackhawks’ final play against Plainfield East — fourth-and-goal from the Bengals’ 5-yard line in the waning seconds Friday night — failed after a muffed exchange from center. The Bengals, who had 150 of their 280 yards from scrimmage on two long plays from halfback Malcolm Agyeben, escaped with the 14-7 nonconference victory in Plainfield.

  • Geneva overpowers West Aurora Aug 30, 2014 7:13 PM
Rob Wicinski described the relationship between his star quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and star wide receiver Pace Temple as only the glib coach can. “It’s his binky,” Wicinski said of how Santacaterina always can find Temple for a key reception. “They have worked hard all summer. They are best friends. They would just go out and throw constantly. That’s how you get better. It pays off and I’m just trying to stay out of the way.” It took all of one play Saturday in Geneva’s season opener at West Aurora for Santacaterina to connect with Temple, and all of one minute, 59 seconds for the two to find the end zone. Santacaterina’s 18-yard strike to Temple erased an early 3-0 deficit, and that TD served as the start of an unstoppable day for Geneva’s first-team offense in a 41-23 win in Aurora.
