    Students from six high schools held mock trials at the Kane Couty Judicial Center in St. Charles on Friday. Judges offered tips, and teachers said the annual exercise, organized by the Kane County Bar Foundation, helps students gain a greater appreciation of the judicial system. Aurora Central Catholic, Bartlett High School, Batavia High School, Elgin Academy, St. Edward Central Catholic and West Aurora High School students played roles of prosecutors, defense attorneys, witnesses and jurors.

    A team of 25 Fox Valley area high school students will compete in the FIRST Robotics World Finals this week in St. Louis. More than 2,700 teams made up of 68,000 high school students worldwide vied for a spot in the finals at regional, state and international competitions. The Fox Valley area team is among roughly 400 teams that qualified.

    The Upstate Eight Conference had a sneak peak of its soon-to-be two newest members Monday afternoon in Aurora. West Aurora scored five times in the opening two innings and added another 5-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning to ease to an 11-3 softball victory over Glenbard East in the schools’ DuPage Valley Conference opener.

    Even before it took the field on Wednesday against East Aurora, Kaneland’s girls soccer team knew it had sealed the West Aurora Invitational title. The Knights refused to relax against the Tomcats. Eight different players scored goals in an 8-1 victory that raised their record to 6-1.

    A little match experience? Who needs that? Not Glenbard North. A scheduling mix-up forced the Panthers’ only game before Saturday’s West Aurora Tournament to be called off. That meant Dedra DeBenedetti’s club would be making its season debut at the tournament. The Panthers started with wins over Oswego and Bolingbrook in pool play, defeated Schamburg in the semifinals and fought back for a 3-set win over Joliet West in the championship match to take the 12-team tournament title.

  • Geneva overwhelms West Aurora Apr 5, 2014 8:15 PM
    It was a nightmarish bottom of the fourth inning for the West Aurora baseball team Saturday afternoon in Geneva. Seventeen Geneva players came to the plate; 14 of them reached base in some manner in consecutive order as the Vikings completely overwhelmed their future conference rival. Seven different players scored for Geneva in its half of the fourth, and the slaughter rule mercifully ended the nonconference game after five innings. Geneva won its third straight game to open the season with its 20-4 victory.

  • West Aurora surprises St. Charles East Apr 4, 2014 7:56 PM
    If West Aurora was looking to build momentum heading into its 2014 spring season, the Blackhawks couldn’t have asked for much more than they got sweeping a doubleheader Friday at St. Charles East. Spotting the defending Class 4A state runners-up a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth, West Aurora scratched out two runs to tie it, threw out the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the seventh, then plated the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 victory.
