  • West Aurora, Howard too much for Glenbard East Dec 12, 2014 8:50 AM
Even after scoring the game’s first two baskets in the first 90 seconds Thursday, West Aurora senior guard Marquis Howard still had no idea how big his basketball night would become at Glenbard East. By the time he came out for good midway through the third quarter, Howard had collected a personal-high 26 points on 10-of-11 shooting with six 3-pointers as the Blackhawks rolled to a 72-38 Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division victory in Lombard.

  • Freshman helps West Aurora throttle East Aurora Dec 6, 2014 11:31 PM
There are few boys basketball programs in the state who can match West Aurora in terms of career downstate appearances. There is a newcomer to remember after the 218th rendition of the Blackhawks’ century-plus rivalry with East Aurora: Camron Donatlan. The small forward led four West Aurora starters in double figures as the Blackhawks turned a close contest after one quarter into its fourth straight convincing victory over the Tomcats at home Saturday night.

  • Defense carries Bartlett past West Aurora Dec 4, 2014 10:48 PM
Lacking in team size, Bartlett’s girls basketball team knows that in order to be successful this season it will have to play solid defense. That was evident on Thursday night in Bartlett when the Hawks used an aggressive smothering defense to help force West Aurora into 25 turnovers in the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division opener for both teams. The defense, coupled with enough offense, sparked Bartlett to a 48-27 win.

  • Geneva, St. Charles North set for early showdown Dec 3, 2014 3:56 PM
Here we go. The Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls basketball race came down to the final day of the season a year ago, Batavia and Geneva winning their games to share the championship. Batavia’s co-title was the most the Vikings have been pushed since Geneva joined the Upstate Eight. They have owned the area’s bragging rights lately, but to stay on top this year they are going to have to fend off several squads hoping to take their place. That starts with their first conference game of the year Thursday night and a trip to St. Charles North.

  • Strong start pushes West Aurora past Rosary Dec 1, 2014 10:25 PM
Even if West Aurora’s press didn’t force a single turnover Monday night against Rosary, Blackhawks coach Connie Siljendahl knew it would work to her advantage by forcing the Royals to play at a faster pace. West’s press did just that, and it also was awfully effective early at rattling the Royals. West Aurora forced 11 turnovers in the opening quarter, quickly jumped ahead 6-0 and never led by less than 5 points the rest of the way in a 48-36 victory between the neighboring schools.
