Wheaton posts state’s top score Apr 19, 2013 12:00 AM
The Wheaton co-op boys gymnastics team made a statement on Friday night in Lombard. Wheaton cruised to victory in the DuPage Valley Conference meet at Glenbard East and in doing show posted the top team score in the state, flirting with a 160 before settling with an impressive 159.25. “It shows how good we are and how good we can get and we’re still nowhere close to where we want to be right now,” Wheaton junior Ethan Sansone said. “We’re going to keep working in the gym and we want our final product to be ideal.”

Expected to be good, Batavia baseball, Saints softball better than advertised Apr 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Prior to the start of the high school — I can't wait until it actually starts feeling like — spring season, two local teams were included among the annual preview stories. Nothing fancy, nothing new. Overlooked by some, Batavia's baseball team began its season last month with a game that wasn't even listed on its original schedule.

West Aurora makes its case at Downers Grove North Apr 12, 2013 12:00 AM
The West Aurora girls track and field team had a glaring omission from its trophy case in recent years. Despite a host of prestigious titles, including three county championships, a pair of DuPage Valley Conference titles and an equal number of sectional triumphs in Class 3A the last three years, the Ritter Invite at Downers Grove North had proven mightily elusive with three straight runner-up performances. But behind the indomitable talents of Emma Spagnola and Anita Saffra Friday night in Downers Grove, the Blackhawks eased past field-event heavy Prospect 119-105 to win the 14-team invitational.

Rosary roars to West Aurora title Apr 10, 2013 12:00 AM
On one of the chillier midseason evenings in recent memory, Rosary broke the ice in Wednesday’s girls soccer match with West Aurora in emphatic fashion. The Royals, needing to win in order to claim the West Aurora Invitational title, scored twice in the opening seven minutes, were never tied and roared to a 6-2 victory. “We were passing the ball really well those first 10 minutes or so,” Rosary coach Kristy Kane said. “That was really nice to see. I think it was probably our best 10 minutes of soccer this year.”

St. Francis hands West Aurora first defeat Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
There were some strange plays and far too many double plays, but in the end, Saturday's game was quite memorable for senior Tim Zettinger and his St. Francis teammates.

West Aurora tops Rosary to snap skid Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Kaylee Hayton was two pitches away from perfection Thursday afternoon at Rosary. The West Aurora right-hander fanned 13 batters while walking none in a dominant 1-hit victory over the Royals in the schools' annual softball non-conference game. With their 6-0 triumph the Blackhawks (1-6) ended their six-game season-opening losing streak; Rosary dropped to 1-2.

About time we’ve got baseball and softball to talk about Apr 1, 2013 12:00 AM
In celebration of the opening week of the high school baseball/softball season, here are 9 things on my mind:
-
St. Charles N. wins West Aurora tourney Mar 30, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Charles North dropped the first game of their boys volleyball championship match against Schaumburg with back-to-back hitting errors. But the North Stars more than atoned for their consecutive miscues against the Saxons Saturday afternoon at the 12-team West Aurora tournament. St. Charles North forged the equalizer in the second game and hit the Saxons with a resounding 19-3 run in the rubber game to win their first significant tournament title in program history with the 25-27, 25-18, 25-11 victory in Aurora.

Tri-Cities area boys tennis preview Mar 28, 2013 12:00 AM
The battle for the best boys tennis team in the Upstate Eight Conference could not have been much more competitive than it was a year ago, and all signs point to a repeat of that exciting race this spring.

Dattolo, West Aurora silence St. Charles East Mar 26, 2013 12:00 AM
West Aurora senior pitcher Ottavio Dattolo wasn't sure what was going to happen when he took the mound Tuesday afternoon against St. Charles East. And for good reason, considering the Blackhawks hadn't stepped foot on a baseball diamond yet this season due to the frigid outdoor conditions across suburban Chicago the past few weeks. The right-hander tossed 6 scoreless innings before giving way to senior closer Chris Hawks, who slammed the door shut on the Saints (0-1) during the Blackhawks' 1-0 nonconference victory in St. Charles.

Hauser saves Geneva early, then Vikings soar Mar 23, 2013 12:00 AM
At the end of Saturday's match, there was no denying that Geneva's girls soccer team was better than West Aurora's — the 8-0 final emphatically made that point. But there were moments in the match where the visiting Blackhawks stretched the hosts before the goal flood came. In the opening half, Geneva keeper Sam Hauser made a pair of saves as good as any that will be made this spring. The second, a diving save to her right to keep out a rifled shot by Reilly Kulakowski ranks as an all-state caliber stop. The first of those saves — also on a Kulakowski shot — came when the score was still 0-0.

Scouting Tri-Cities area boys volleyball teamsMar 22, 2013 12:00 AM
In just its second year with a boys volleyball program in 2012, Geneva went 17-12 and tied St. Charles East for the Upstate Eight Conference River title. While starting a team can often lead to years of growing pains and losing seasons, Vikings coach KC Johnsen thinks he knows why the Vikings have been successful so quickly. "We've been lucky that some really good athletes have decided to give volleyball a try," Johnsen said. "That makes a lot of difference. They pick it up very fast and move well on the court and are competitive guys and jump a little bit. Makes it a quicker jump start. (We wouldn't have won so fast) if we didn't have such good athletes."
