West Aurora High School, district sued over 2009 expulsion Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
A former West Aurora student is suing a teacher, the district and school board, saying he was wrongly expelled after a teacher confiscated his cellphone. Alexander Contini says he did not shove a teacher nor yank the teacher's arm and that a surveillance video proves his innocence. He seeks more than $50,000 damages for defamation, conspiracy and emotional distress. A District 129 official said he has not seen the suit and could not comment.

Waubonsie Valley never did solve Abriya Zeitz on Monday night in Lemont. The West Aurora junior forward more or less personally closed out the Warriors' girls basketball season by scoring a game-high 16 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, stealing 4 passes and adding a trio of assists in the Blackhawks' 42-31 victory in a Class 4A Lemont regional quarterfinal.

Bail set in hammer murder, burning of Aurora teen Feb 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Bail was set Monday for two of three men accused in the murder of Abigail Villalpando, 18, of Aurora, who was beaten to death with a hammer. Her burned body was moved to a wooded area near Montgomery, where it was found Saturday. Villalpando's murder is the first homicide in Aurora since late 2011. By Monday a white cross had been placed near the woods in Villalpando's memory. “Why did they do this to Abigail?” someone wrote on the cross.

Pitting the area’s No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams, the second game Saturday at Batavia’s 20th annual Jim and Sylvia Roberts Night of Hoops looked like a can’t-miss pick for one of the games of the year. Turns out it was just Benet who couldn’t miss. The Redwings blistered the nets in the first half, hitting 68 percent of their shots from the field including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. That sizzling start enabled No. 1 Benet to build a 19-point halftime lead over No. 2 West Aurora. The Redwings cooled a bit in the second half, though never enough to allow the Blackhawks to get within single digits on their way to an impressive 62-50 victory.

Having spent way more of Naperville North's game at West Aurora Thursday night on the bench in foul trouble than she wanted, senior guard Zoe Swift made the most of her minutes when she finally got back in. After the Blackhawks had erased Naperville North's 13-point first half lead to go ahead for the first time midway through the fourth quarter, Swift re-entered. Over the final 4:48 Swift scored all 6 of her points and assisted on two other baskets, helping her team turn a 42-39 deficit into a 52-48 victory.

West Aurora came out in its same white home uniforms for the second half Tuesday night of its DuPage Valley Conference game with Naperville Central, but the Blackhawks looked like an entirely different team. That same West Aurora squad that made 7 of 26 field goal attempts for 26.9 percent shooting in the first half canned 8 of 10 in the third quarter and 10 of 13 in the fourth for a blistering 78.2 percent mark in the second half. The Blackhawks needed that sizzling shooting to hold off a determined and improving Naperville Central team 57-52, maintaining their tie for the DVC lead with Glenbard East.

When the Glenbard North 132-pound wrestler put the finishing touches on his 7-1 victory in the championship match over West Chicago junior Robert Svestka, Gosinski became the sixth athlete in league history to become a four-time league champion. As a team, the conference should consider permanently retiring its championship trophy after the host Panthers extended their remarkable streak of consecutive titles to 15.

Aurora Central Catholic mounted a furious second half run, rallying from an 11-point deficit to edge Guerin Prep 51-50 in Suburban Christian Blue action. The host Chargers (11-11, 2-7) were led by senior co-captains Alex DeCreane with 19 and Lisa Rodriguez with 11. Both hit pressure free throws late in the 4th quarter to stave off Guerin's comeback attempt. ACC avenged a 55-54 loss to Guerin on Dec. 7.

Seniors Spencer Thomas and Matt Williams usually fill their roles with defense, rebounding and hustle plays for West Aurora. On Saturday night, their roles were to fill the stat sheet with more points than usually anticipated when the Blackhawks faced St. Joseph in the 16th Annual National Guard High School Hoops Showdown at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. Thomas scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and Williams provided a big early boost with 9 of his 10 points in the second quarter as the Blackhawks (16-3) produced a solid 56-47 victory over the Chargers (12-10).
