  • Waubonsie gets edge for postseason May 22, 2014 10:27 PM
The hope was that Thursday’s regular-season finale between Waubonsie Valley and Benet would prove a nice launching pad into next week’s volleyball playoffs. For the most part it did, even though only one team could prevail. On this night it was the visiting Warriors who pulled out a tight 25-21, 25-23 nonconference win to send 26-9 Waubonsie Valley into the postseason with nine straight victories. The win in Lisle also avenged a three-game loss suffered earlier this season to the Redwings.

  • Neuqua’s Widmann comes back from ‘bottom of the well’ May 23, 2014 12:24 AM
There’s the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. And there’s whatever Neuqua Valley junior Michael Widmann endured Thursday at the Class 3A Joliet West boys track sectional.

  • Metea surprises Waubonsie May 21, 2014 9:38 PM
The timing of Wednesday’s 7-5 Metea Valley softball team’s win over No. 9-ranked Waubonsie Valley couldn’t have been better for the Mustangs. Although Metea (8-19, 6-12 Upstate Eight Valley) has battled consistently throughout the year, the effort hasn’t shown in the numbers and some momentum was needed before Monday’s playoff opener.

  • No stopping Waubonsie Valley on Senior Night May 20, 2014 12:17 AM
Waubonsie Valley senior boys volleyball player Connor Douville was in the midst of a serving streak to finish out the second set Monday when Warren called a timeout. “I was just drinking water, and then all of a sudden, there was blood on my hand. I had a random bloody nose,” Douville said. “I’ve never had that happen in a game before.” This, however, was his Senior Night. Nothing was going to stop Douville or the Warriors from rallying for a 19-25, 25-19, 25-19 victory in Aurora.

  • Wins, PRs come for Neuqua Valley May 16, 2014 12:42 AM
Neuqua Valley boys track coach Mike Kennedy provided his athletes a simple message for Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Elgin’s Memorial Stadium. “He told us, every race you go into, either you win or you PR, because you win either way,” said Wildcats junior Zac Espinosa. He achieved both in the 400-meter run, edging teammate Nick Rafacz while setting a personal record at 49.33 seconds. Neuqua Valley did win either way, both in the Valley Division and among all 14 UEC teams. In the first year of a post-Lake Park UEC, the Wildcats earned a total of 131 points, a fair cushion over Waubonsie Valley’s 109 and River Division winner Batavia’s 103.

  • Waubonsie Valley repeats as UEC champs May 14, 2014 10:04 PM
When you have mad skills like Kristen Dodson, you can get mad at yourself for not finishing off a great opportunity, even if it was set up my your very own skills. But the Waubonsie Valley senior attacker is so skilled that she tends to create opportunities to make up for the rare times in which she doesn’t finish off those golden chances.

  • Grosshuesch leaves a lasting legacy at District 204 May 15, 2014 12:09 AM
A boy needs a nickname, his grandfather said. His parents, Calvin and Chummy — now there’s a nickname — didn’t fancy it, they preferred Clayt, the name they gave him at birth in Iowa. Not Clay or Clayton. Clayt. But grandpa prevailed. “My parents said, ‘You can call him that, but it’ll never stick,’” said “Spike” Grosshuesch.

  • Waubonsie Valley comes back for No. 17 May 13, 2014 11:01 PM
It wasn’t looking good for the Waubonsie Valley softball team. There were two outs in the bottom of the seventh of their game Tuesday at home against Neuqua Valley. The Wildcats were leading 4-1. The Warriors’ grip on sole possession of first place in the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division was slipping. The chances of extending their winning streak to 17 games were fading. But this is Waubonsie Valley, where a lead on the Warriors isn’t absolutely safe until the final out of the game.

  • Neuqua Valley picks itself up with win May 13, 2014 11:00 PM
A short memory is a must for high school baseball teams. With Tuesday’s 5-1 win over Waubonsie Valley, Neuqua Valley finally began to put some distance between itself and a rough slate of games last week. Andy Sommers pitched a 3-hitter for the Wildcats (13-14, 12-9), who salvaged the third and final game of the Upstate Eight Conference series and snapped a five-game losing streak spanning all of last week.

  • St. Charles East runs away with UEC May 8, 2014 11:42 PM
St. Charles East sophomore Keely Flanigan summed up the Saints’ winning approach to Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference girls track meet at Geneva, the last primer before next week’s all-important sectional meets. “Our goal was just to do the best we can and improve ourselves,” said Flanigan, who ran the second leg of St. Charles East’s winning 1,600-meter relay. “And if we happen to win, that’s good, too.” It went pretty good for the Saints, who happened to win it all, as it turned out. In a meet that decided an overall champion as well as River and Valley Division champions, St. Charles East was the clear-cut winner. The Saints amassed 142 team points to run away with the overall and River Division titles.
