    It’s taken longer than expected, but the defending state all-around champion finally competed again as an all-arounder. Geneva sophomore Claire Ginsberg won the IHSA title in February earlier this year, but a knee injury and illness limited her to a two-event specialist in the team’s five previous meets. Ginsberg certainly didn’t look like someone who has been out of commission for very long as she was the best during Saturday’s Illinois Best Invitational at Wheaton Warrenville, winning the all-around title with a 37.225 and helping Geneva edge Wheaton co-op, 72.25 to 71.725 for the team championship.

    The cafeteria manager at Waubonsie Valley High School appeared before a DuPage County judge Sunday facing allegations she stole more than $50,000 from the Aurora school. Kristy Davis, 48, of the 3800 block of Junebreeze Lane in Naperville, faces one count of theft over $10,000, a Class 1 felony, which is punishable by a maximum four to 15 years in prison.

The action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with third-round consolation matches, followed by semifinals on the Barrington Fieldhouse floor.

    In season-opening basketball games, a year or two of varsity experience can make all the difference. Palatine took full advance of its experience against a young Waubonsie Valley team in Monday’s opening round of the Ed Molitor Thanksgiving Classic on the Pirates home court. Palatine applied a relentless pressing defense that created 17 turnovers and overcame a 7-0 early deficit to put the season opener in the win column, 60-47. Waubonsie Valley plays York in the second round at 7:45 tonight, while Palatine plays again Wednesday at 7:45 against Chicago’s Richards Career Academy.
