    Five speakers worked to inspire an audience Saturday morning in only two hours at Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora during the school’s first Movement ONE event. Based on the popular TED Talks, a series of short, inspirational speeches often given at universities and posted online, Movement ONE was designed simply to motivate and inspire, organizers said.

    Kaitlyn Rudy of Stevenson, who made her first trip to the girls bowling state finals, is now the highest-finishing competitor in the program’s history. And she achieved that lofty standing by virtue of a frenetic finish. Going into the final game on Saturday, the Patriots junior was in the 12th spot, just thinking about trying to hang on for a medal. But Rudy finished with an impressive 247 game that moved her up to third place (2,639 over the 12 games) in the girls bowling state tournament at Cherry Bowl.

    Hard work really does pay off. Especially for Waubonsie Valley’s Angelica Hernandez, who’s seen her bowling average rise by 78 pins in less than a year. Hernandez had a 118 average last March, but she steadily made gains, practicing and working on her game while seeing improvement all along the way. The result was an average approaching the 200 mark entering the state tournament weekend at Cherry Bowl in Rockford. On Friday, the sophomore started off with a 604 series with games of 224, 181 and 199. In the afternoon, she threw games of 209, 174 and 183 for a 566 series for a 6-game total of 1,170.
