Waubonsie Valley never did solve Abriya Zeitz on Monday night in Lemont. The West Aurora junior forward more or less personally closed out the Warriors' girls basketball season by scoring a game-high 16 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, stealing 4 passes and adding a trio of assists in the Blackhawks' 42-31 victory in a Class 4A Lemont regional quarterfinal.

It’s not often that a 30-point effort by Jared Brownridge gets overshadowed. But Waubonsie Valley senior forward Bryan Jefferson provided both the spectacular and the sublime to lead the Warriors to a 76-62 victory over host Metea Valley on Saturday night in Aurora.

Zak attack leads to 11th-place medal Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Grant senior Sami Jo Zak practiced day after day over the last few years, harboring a dream of making it to state one day. She ended up carrying the dream farther than she ever imagined possible on Saturday afternoon in the girls bowling state tournament at Cherry Bowl Lanes. Zak wasn’t sure if she was in line to receive one of the top 12 medals, even after throwing a final game of 257. The final announcement that Zak finished 11th place with a 12-game total of 2,554 pins caught her by a total surprise.

Waubonsie’s strong showing can’t thwart St. Charles North Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Even if Waubonsie Valley’s thrilling win in the 400-yard freestyle relay wasn’t enough to overtake St. Charles North for the Upstate Eight team title, the Warriors did manage to cap off the conference meet in style and send themselves off to sectionals with a big boost of confidence.

Basketball: Week 9 MVPs Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Waubonsie Valley senior guard Jared Brownridge and Burlington Central freshman guard Shelby Holt have earned Daily Herald MVP honors for their recent basketball performances. Brownridge had 33 points in a win over Bartlett and 26 to help the Warriors beat Peoria Central. Holt had 6 3s, 21 points, 4 steals and 2 blocks to help Burlington Central clinch a conference championship by winning at Richmond-Burton.

St. Charles East takes UEC title Jan 19, 2013 12:00 AM
Anthony Touchstone will be the answer to a trivia question one day. When the Waubonsie Valley senior outlasted St. Charles North senior Wes Pasholk in the finals of the Upstate Eight Conference tournament on Saturday afternoon in Batavia, the 220-pounder became the only non-top seed to win an individual championship.

The Lake Park senior, bidding for a fourth consecutive league title, was one of 14 top-seeded athletes to advance into the semifinals of the individual conference championship Friday night in Batavia.

Ashley Luke Clanton could do without the traffic, but her return home to Chicago does come with its perks. “Starbucks,” she laughed. “It was five years since I had been to Starbucks.” Clanton, a high school All-America at Waubonsie Valley and three-time Daily Herald All-Area captain, is back in sweet “home” Chicago this year, taking the girls basketball coaching position at Mother McAuley. Clanton coached the last five years at Danville, three hours south of Aurora and east of Champaign. In a way, leaving Danville was leaving home.
