  • Waubonsie Valley finishes with a win Jun 8, 2014 1:09 AM
Waubonsie Valley worked hard all season long it put itself in a position to win a girls soccer championship this weekend. Those plans were thwarted in Friday’s 1-0 loss to New Trier, in the Class 3A semifinals at North Central in Naperville. While there was a great deal of disappointment in that loss, only the team’s second of the season and first since the team’s opener in mid-March, the Warriors put all of that behind them and dominated Saturday, disposing of Lincoln-Way North 5-1 to bring home a third-place trophy.

When Waubonsie Valley needed a goal, it turned to leading scorer Kristen Dodson, and Dodson turned and fired. “I didn’t want this to be our last game, so whatever it took,” the Warriors’ Auburn-bound senior said. “If I had to pass the ball, if someone else had to do something, I just wanted to get the win.” With a defender on her back and the score tied in overtime, Dodson spun and hit a strike from 23 yards that found net, giving the top-seeded Warriors a 2-1 victory against the host Redhawks at the Class 3A Naperville Central regional final. • Waubonsie gets edge for postseason May 22, 2014 10:27 PM
The hope was that Thursday’s regular-season finale between Waubonsie Valley and Benet would prove a nice launching pad into next week’s volleyball playoffs.
