    Eric Marbach of Waubonsie Valley returned to varsity tennis this season after two years away on the USTA circuit because he wanted a shot at the state title in his senior year. On Saturday Marbach came very close to his goal when he finished second in the state tournament singles bracket losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in a closely fought three-set match to the No. 1 seed, Hinsdale Central's Martin Joyce. “He finished the season with a 29-1 record,” said Waubonsie Valley coach Phil Galow. “And he went three sets, 4-6 in the final set, in the state finals with the best player in the state. Eric really impressed me with the way he played and with the way he conducted himself all season. I'm very proud of him.”

That’s why the Mustangs spent a little extra time savoring Saturday’s regional championship. They beat Waubonsie Valley 4-1 in the Class 4A Hinsdale Central regional final, advancing to Wednesday’s Neuqua Valley sectional semifinals to face Downers Grove North, a 6-5 winner over Metea Valley.

    Tyler Hasper just wanted to see a fastball. He took care of the rest. The Waubonsie Valley junior got the pitch he wanted and launched a 2-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Warriors a 2-0 victory over the host Red Devils in Friday's Class 4A Hinsdale Central regional semifinals.

    Since she was a young forward, Naperville North senior Zoe Swift has heard coaches tell her to follow shots. On Friday afternoon at the Class 3A Bolingbrook sectional final, it paid off. Twice. Twice a Naperville North shot hit the Waubonsie Valley crossbar, and twice Swift was on the spot to tap it into the Warriors' goal in the Huskies' 2-1 victory.

    Waubonsie Valley made a tough girls soccer sectional semifinal look downright easy. The third-seeded Warriors scored three times in the first half and defeated No. 2 Plainfield North 4-0 Wednesday at Bolingbrook. They will meet defending Class 3A champion Naperville North in the sectional final at 4 p.m. Friday.

    Sammy Granger missed all of volleyball season with a back injury that also slowed her this spring. While pitching Tuesday, she had the unusual circumstance of a bee sting on the mound. Overcoming both, she put a hurting to Waubonsie Valley. Granger, Wheaton Warrenville South’s senior captain, hit a tone-setting three-run homer in the first inning, then took a shutout into the seventh as the No. 13 seed Tigers stung No. 4 Waubonsie 4-2 in a Class 4A Yorkville regional semifinal.

  • Waubonsie Valley defeats South Elgin to win Valley May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
    Waubonsie Valley's wait was worth it. Its game with South Elgin Friday suspended after one batter due to rain, the two teams came back on Monday with the No. 4 Warriors' 4-1 win clinching the outright Upstate Eight Valley championship.
