    Campton Hills leaders want to hire administrator Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
    Campton Hills trustees have given the go-ahead in their 2014 budget to have a village administrator. Ideally, they'd like to have a person hired by June, when the 2014 fiscal year starts. In coming months, the village's finance committee will hash out how much can be set aside and if that person is full- or part-time. Village President Patsy Smith has basically worn an administrator's hat for the last 5-plus years.

    Only 23 medieval girdle books have survived in their original form, but visitors to Elgin Community College can see a replica of this 13th-through-16th-century status symbol at an exhibition that recently opened. The artwork of eight Elgin Community College graphic design faculty members will be displayed through Saturday, Feb. 16, in Safety-Kleen Gallery One inside the ECC Arts Center, Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

    A Campton Hills man accused in September 2011 of beating his daughter with a belt has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was sentenced to four years probation. Mathew Gumbel, 35, had faced a minimum six-year prison term if convicted of aggravated battery of a child.

     
  • ECC readiness initiative up for award Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
    Elgin Community College's Alliance for College Readiness initiative has been recognized on a national stage for being a "cutting-edge, trendsetting" program. ECC is a finalist for the Community College Futures Assembly Bellwether Award, which has recognized noteworthy programs across the country since 1995. Five representatives of the college will give a presentation at the assembly Jan. 28 in Orlando, Fla., with an announcement of the winners set for Jan. 30.

     
  • ECC Alliance for College Readiness wins college national award Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
    Elgin Community College was recognized Tuesday with the 2012 Bellwether Award, education's equivalent to football's Heisman Trophy. The Community College Futures Assembly chose ECC over hundreds of other schools, declaring its college readiness initiative the top instructional program in the country. "It underscores what we've been doing for a long time, indicating to people that partnership works," ECC President David Sam said.

    ECC basketball team ³adopts² a kid who has had a serious illness since birth. Matthew Erickson, son of South Elgin assistant baseball coach and former Larkin and Judson star Ben, who has had a serious illness since birth (hundreds of thousands spent on the kid's treatment) will be "adopted" by the ECC basketball team. It is "adopting" the kid as a part of the "Friends of Jaclyn" program.

    Matthew Donald Erickson has two siblings already, but he’ll gain 14 new big brothers when he is “adopted” by the Elgin Community College men’s basketball team in what promises to be a heartwarming gathering Saturday at 11 a.m. Such moments of joy are welcome for Huntley parents Ben and Sue Erickson, whose son has spent the first 13 months of his life battling a rare form of brain cancer rarely diagnosed in infants. Ben and Sue learned something wasn’t quite right shortly before Thanksgiving 2011. An ultrasound revealed Matthew would be born with hydrocephalus, an excess of cerebral fluid. The Ericksons’ third child was born on Dec. 11. Four days later he endured a procedure to relieve pressure on the brain caused by the fluid.

    Officials representing the Kiva Recovery Center, rejected by Campton Hills trustees, said they plan to take their proposal to the Kane County Board. Kiva had asked to be annexed into the village, which gave trustees the ability to negotiate numerous conditions. "We regret that the majority of the village board was unable to separate fact from fear,” a Kiva attorney said.
