Police are searching for a man who grabbed a 13-year-old girl by the arm after asking her for money and offering her drugs while she walked to school Thursday morning in Villa Park, authorities said. The encounter occurred about 8 a.m. near Westmore Avenue and Terrace Street.

An educator who has risen from teaching to hold leadership positions in Villa Park-Lombard Elementary District 45 will become the district's next superintendent starting July 1. Anthony Palmisano, principal at Jackson Middle School, was chosen Tuesday night to become superintendent upon the retirement of current top administrator Janice M. Rosales.

A Villa Park boy whose family is concerned about safety at the School of Expressive Arts and Learning's new location in Lombard no longer will attend the school. Susan Cloutier-Regan said school officials denied her request to install fencing around the new building, which is bordered on three sides by natural wetlands, and told her during a meeting this week that her son no longer is welcome. "I was pretty disgusted," she said.

The Partnership for Inspired Education (PIE) annual event joins four school district serving nine communities to raise funds for education. More than 400 people attended the group's recent fundraiser in Oakbrook Terrace, which raised close to $13,000. “It was wonderful to see a room filled with people, all of whom were there in support of education,” said Michele Cummins, principal for District 45's Ardmore School.

The School District 45 Board of Education has initiated a superintendent search to replace Dr. Janice M. Rosales, who will retire at the end of the 2012-13 school year. The Board took action to hire Dr. William C. Schewe to conduct the search. Dr. Schewe will begin the process by conducting a series of Parent/Community Forums.

The Lombard Fire Department has a few new faces and the Lombard community has a few new lifesaving devices after a recent series of promotions and automatic external defibrillator giveaways. Three new firefighters were sworn in and Lt. Paul DiRienzo was promoted to battalion chief during Thursday's village board meeting, at which the fire department also gave out 11 automatic external defibrillators.
