    Grayslake Elementary District 46 taxpayers have already spent $2,300 more for the annual school board and administrators conference in downtown Chicago than they did last year. And that's just the registration costs and hotel deposits for the Nov. 22-24 conference. Eight suburban districts have already spent more on the conference than they did last year. So far, 62 suburban districts have registered 532 school board members, administrators and employees at a cost of $307,647.

    Problems with school bus service have caused some students in Villa Park Elementary District 45 to arrive late for classes and to get home late as well, officials said Thursday. Four days into the school year, some buses still were running 30 minutes late or more, officials said. The district has been using an automated phone system to send multiple messages to parents to update them on the status of bus schedules.

    An educator who has risen from teaching to hold leadership positions in Villa Park-Lombard Elementary District 45 will become the district's next superintendent starting July 1. Anthony Palmisano, principal at Jackson Middle School, was chosen Tuesday night to become superintendent upon the retirement of current top administrator Janice M. Rosales.

    A Villa Park boy whose family is concerned about safety at the School of Expressive Arts and Learning's new location in Lombard no longer will attend the school. Susan Cloutier-Regan said school officials denied her request to install fencing around the new building, which is bordered on three sides by natural wetlands, and told her during a meeting this week that her son no longer is welcome. "I was pretty disgusted," she said.

Three new firefighters were sworn in and Lt. Paul DiRienzo was promoted to battalion chief during Thursday's village board meeting, at which the fire department also gave out 11 automatic external defibrillators.
