    Bartlett 79, Elgin 36: The Hawks (15-9) jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a commanding victory over the Maroons in this Upstate Eight Conference crossover game. Liz Arco paced the Hawks as she recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Kelly Harris (16 points) and Ally Giampapa (13 points, 4 assists) scored double figures. The Maroons (6-14) were led by Maggie Powers and Abby Pierre-Louis with 8 and 7 points, respectively. Morgan Park Academy 47, Elgin Academy 16: The Hilltoppers could not get the offense rolling as they fell to Morgan Park Academy on the road. Kaitlyn Pearson led the Hilltoppers with 8 points, 6 steals, and 1 block. Prairie Ridge 50, Cary-Grove 48 (2 OT): The Trojans (13-10, 4-5) fell just short in double overtime as they dropped this Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game at home. Sarah Kendeigh led the way for C-G with 11 points while Jen Pilut added 10 points in the loss.

    In his early coaching days Mark Smith used to worry about the inactivity that comes with winter weather canceling school, practices and games. But now the Burlington Central girls basketball coach realizes everyone’s in the same boat. “No one has an advantage and there’s not much you can do about it,” Smith, who is also the former boys coach at St. Charles North, said Tuesday. “We’ll just pick it up (Wednesday) and move on.”

    Page 2 Foodies take note: Fine dining is back at McHenry County College. Slàinte (pronounced “slawn-cha”), the college’s student-managed restaurant, will reopen for the spring semester at MCC on Monday, Feb. 10. Restaurant hours will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays through April 22.

    Harvest Christian 42, Christian Liberty 22: Kylee Knox led Harvest Christian (11-8) to a victory against Christian Liberty Saturday in a nonconference game that was scheduled after the Northeastern Athletic Conference tournament was canceled due to the weather. Knox had 25 points, including a 6-for-6 free throw performance. Harvest Christian 52, Luther North 49: The Lions (11-8) also defeated Luther North. Kylee Knox led Harvest Christian with 24 points. Rachel Oostdyk finished with 12 points and Morgan Lockwood added 11 points. Grayslake Central 39, Hampshire 33: The Whip-Purs (7-13, 2-7) suffered a loss to Fox Valley Conference Fox Division opponent Grayslake Central Saturday. Sara Finn led Hampshire with 9 points, while Tricia Dumoulin contributed 8 points. Hersey 55, Cary-Grove 29: Katie Barker led the Trojans (13-9) with 12 points during nonconference competition against Hersey. St. Edward 35, Rosary 34: Katie Swanson helped lead the Green Wave (13-7, 5-2) to victory in Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division play Saturday. Swanson (12 points) made a free throw with 6.6 seconds left in the game to put St. Edward up by one. Casey Gredzieleski finished with 8 points for St. Edward. St. Charles North 67, Larkin 47: The Royals (7-14, 2-7) suffered an Upstate Eight Conference River Division loss Saturday. Marlee Kyles led Larkin with 19 points, while Quixmia Washington (14 points) and Victoria Patterson (10) also contributed. Postponements: Dundee-Crown’s scheduled FVC Valley game at McHenry was postponed due to a contract mix-up, and Burlington Central’s Big Northern East game at Genoa-Kingston was postponed due to the weather.

Making 9 of its first 10 shots, the Trojans ripped off a 22-4 run to start the third quarter and broke open a close game in cruising to a 61-43 win over the short-handed Gators in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action in Cary Friday night.

    McHenry County College will host free tax assistance for those who qualify now through April 12, excluding March 22 and 29. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Room A102 at the college, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake.

    The Cary-Grove girls basketball team knows that in order to be successful as the season approaches state tournament time, it will have to get offense from more than just junior scoring machine Katie Barker in order to win.And while Barker did score 21 points Wednesday night, other Trojans had to step up for C-G to survive a hard-fought battle with improving Dundee-Crown. They did just that, and Cary-Grove made the free throws down the stretch it needed to make to come away from Carpentersville with a 51-42 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win.

    Playing its fifth game in four days, the Jacobs boys basketball team didn’t know if fatigue would be a factor. It wasn’t. Fueled by adrenaline, a 24-point effort by Chris Orange and a great defensive effort by Ben Murray, the Golden Eagles mustered enough energy to produce a 47-43 victory over Cary-Grove in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Algonquin Tuesday night, the Eagles’ third straight win, all coming in the span of just over 24 hours.

    Hampshire 68, Woodstock North 56: Hampshire (7-10, 3-1) came out on top of Fox Valley Conference Fox Division opponent Woodstock North with the help of Ryan Cork’s 17 points. Marian Central 67, Streamwood 61: Marian Central defeated the Sabres (1-17) in two overtimes, while competing in the MLK Shootout at Lake Zurich. Jacob McGlone led Streamwood with 17 points, while Jacob Siewert scored 15 points. Cole Seger (13 points) and Antonio Harris (9) also contributed for the Sabres. Cary-Grove 48, McHenry 45: The Trojans beat Fox Valley Conference Valley Division opponent McHenry in overtime. Jason Gregoire led all scorers with 19 points, while Nick Franz (10 points) and Tyler Szydlo (9) also did well offensively for Cary-Grove. Rockford Auburn 71, Jacobs 64: The Golden Eagles (6-9) took a tough loss to a good team in their first matchup of the day during the MLK Shootout at Hononegah. Chris Orange led Jacobs with 30 points. “Auburn is a very good team. We played well early and they made a run,” said Jacobs head coach Jimmy Roberts. “We played pretty well for the most part.” Hononegah 51, Jacobs 43: Jacobs (6-9) took another loss Saturday evening against host Hononegah. “We shot poorly from the line and the field,” said Jacobs head coach Jimmy Roberts. Bartlett 64, Wheaton Warrenville South 61: The Hawks (12-7) beat Wheaton Warrenville South in overtime at the WWS MLK Shootout. Ryan DiCanio led the scoring with 26 points and Justin Busch contributed 15 points for Bartlett.

    Huntley senior guard Bethany Zornow scored only 3 points, but without her smothering defense on Cary-Grove scoring machine Katie Barker the Red Raiders could have been in trouble. Zornow held Barker to 11 points, 9 under her average as the Red Raiders were able to post a 48-38 win over Cary-Grove in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball action in Cary Friday night.

     
  • Son arrested in Algonquin Township couple's 2006 slayings Jan 17, 2014 12:42 PM
    More than seven years after he told authorities he found his parents murdered in their Cary-area home, a former Algonquin man is behind bars in a Nevada jail facing charges he killed the couple. Michael Romano, 54, was arrested Tuesday in Las Vegas after a McHenry County grand jury indicted him on four counts of first-degree murder stemming from the slayings of Nick and Gloria Romano.

    The Huntley wrestling team has put together an impressive body of work thus far this season. To start the week, the Red Raiders were 14-1 overall in duals and 2-1 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action. Huntley also has fared well in tournament action, placing third out of 10 teams at Fenton, third out of 15 at Harvard and fifth out of 25 at Sycamore.

     
  • Larkin ready for challenge from O’Mara, Benet Jan 16, 2014 7:20 PM
    Following last Friday’s convincing win at No. 16 Neuqua Valley, No. 4 Larkin faces another tough road test at No. 7 Benet Academy on Saturday. The challenge facing Larkin (14-2) senior forwards Drew Jones (6-5), Brayden Royse (6-5) and freshman Christian Negron (6-5) is Benet 6-foot-9 center Sean O’Mara. Committed to Xavier, O’Mara scored 17 points last Friday in the Redwings’ 61-56 win at No. 8 York (14-2). Like Benet (9-4), Larkin has played a tough nonconference schedule, including games against Morgan Park and Zion-Benton. However, the Royals have yet to face a big man as skilled as O’Mara.
