After years of debate, it looks like the extension of Route 53 into Lake County could become a reality. A significant majority — 20 out of 22 members of the Illinois tollway's Route 53/120 Blue Ribbon Advisory Council — voted Friday in favor of a concept plan for a four-lane parkway on Route 53 up to Route 120 with speeds of 45 mph.

Full I-90 interchange coming to Elmhurst RoadMay 18, 2012 12:00 AM
The long-awaited full interchange at Elmhurst Road and I-90 will be built within four years, which will greatly ease truck traffic trying to go west on I-90 or come to Elk Grove Village and Mount Prospect from the west. "For 40 years the full interchange has been drastically needed," Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson said. "We're very excited."

Higher rates drove some motorists away from the Illinois tollway in the first quarter of 2012, statistics released Wednesday indicate. There were about 4 million fewer passenger vehicle transactions January through March as a result of tolls nearly doubling on Jan. 1. In the first quarter of 2011, 169 million passenger transactions occurred compared to 165 million this year, a 2.4 percent drop, the agency reported.

The suspect in a northwest Indiana bank robbery who led police on a 120-mile high speed chase that ended in a quiet residential enclave in Elburn on Friday apparently was trying to go home, authorities said. The tan 1999 Chevrolet Suburban SUV led police down I-294, I-88, Route 31 and through the streets of North Aurora and Batavia, and finally Elburn.

At a time when Illinois is struggling financially, a report shows widespread misuse and abuse of state-owned cars. Some, in fact, are used mainly for workers commuting to and from the office. In 2010, 65 state agencies had 16,600 vehicles and spent $121 million on them. Now the Senate is expected to take up a bill already passed by the House tightening oversight on state-owned vehicle use.
