    It would have been tough to confuse Waubonsie Valley’s offense with a thing of beauty. The Warriors’ defense turned out to be the pageant winner Monday night. Their boys basketball team advanced to the consolation championship game at York’s 40th Annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic with a teeth-pulling 36-25 victory over Timothy Christian in Elmhurst. Bouncing back from a tough first-round loss to Gordon Tech, the Warriors’ third straight win earns them a noon game against Kenwood on Tuesday.

    Elk Grove snapped a two-game losing streak and also put a end to its recent second-half blues at the 40th annual Jack Tosh Tournament at York High School on Thursday night. The Grenadiers never trailed in defeating Timothy Christian 58-38 in first-round action. The win will pit Elk Grove against Palatine at 7:30 p.m. Friday; the winner will take on either St. Patrick or Highland Park.

VanderBrug matched his career high with 29 points to go with 13 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in the Trojans’ 72-67 victory Wednesday night in Aurora.

    The Glenbard South girls basketball team showed in Tuesday night’s 61-17 win at Timothy Christian the value of defense. “We’re playing great defensive basketball right now and that’s tough to play against,” said Raiders coach Julie Fonda. “It was phenomenal tonight.” That defense played a big factor in more than 20 turnovers for the Trojans (1-4, 0-1 Metro Suburban Conference) and the outcome being decided early.
