  • Stevenson’s still winning, and so is Palatine’s Kawai Oct 18, 2014 9:52 PM
Just a week removed from Saturday’s North Suburban Conference title effort, Stevenson continued its winning ways. This version of sectional tennis host by the Patriots was played Friday and Saturday at three different venues, due to volatile weather: Vernon Hills Sports Complex, and indoors at the Libertyville Tennis Club and College Park in Deerfield. The Patriots finished at 31 points, with Barrington second with 25. Fremd and Palatine tied for third with 10 points apiece. All four Stevenson entrants qualified for the state tournament, which will be hosted by Buffalo Grove Thursday through Saturday. Palatine freshman Asuka Kawai stayed unbeaten this season by topping Barrington's Michelle Linden in the singles final.

Not all improvements in sports have to be of the physical nature. Jacobs junior girls tennis standout Ashley Kosy made one important change this season that had nothing to do with that part of her game. “My mentality has changed,” she said. “I used to get too unsettled in matches or I would get upset. Now, I try to improve what I did wrong, get over it and move on.”

After having to settle for a first-place tie with Lake Forest last year, Stevenson wanted to make sure it didn’t leave anything to chance Saturday afternoon at the North Suburban Conference girls tennis meet.
