  • Class 5A football playoffs: St. Viator falls to Sycamore Nov 8, 2014 6:43 PM
An ill wind did not blow St. Viator’s way in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs at Sycamore. The Lions were hoping to defeat the Spartans in a playoff game for the second time in 13 years. However, trailing 15-14 with 58 seconds left, Joe McCollum’s 37-yard field goal attempt was about five yards to the right of the goal post. The No. 12-seeded Spartans were able to escape with the 15-14 victory over the No. 13 Lions, who had defeated Sycamore 25-13 in 2001.

  • St. Edward moves on; tough loss for Hampshire Oct 27, 2014 10:20 PM
St. Edward girls volleyball coach Jaime Dovichi gave her team a game plan Monday night, and the Green Wave went out an executed it. Now they get to try to do the same thing against a No. 1 seed. The Green Wave roared back from a 22-19 deficit in Game 3 to upend Sycamore 25-19, 23-25, 25-19 in the first round of the Class 3A Hampshire regional, advancing to play No. 1 seed Kaneland (22-8) in a 5:30 p.m. semifinal on Tuesday. In Monday’s second game, No. 6 seed Hampshire gave No. 3 Genoa-Kingston all it could handle before the Cogs prevailed 23-25, 26-24, 25-18. G-K (26-9) takes on No. 2 Burlington Central (29-6) in Tuesday’s second semifinal.

  • Sycamore hands Kaneland another last-second loss Oct 3, 2014 11:43 PM
The 12th man is usually reserved for a boisterous home crowd that propels a team to victory, but with all due respect to the Sycamore home faithful, the Spartans may have benefited from a “12th person” known at Mother Nature. Sycamore held off Kaneland to defeat its Northern Illinois Big XII East rival 14-7 with the help of cold temperatures and a 20 mile per hour wind.

  • Burlington Central rolls in regional opener May 27, 2014 8:32 PM
There’s nothing like starting the postseason by scoring 4 runs before the other team records an out. The Burlington Central softball team scored quickly and often Tuesday, beating both Sycamore and the weather in the semifinals of the Class 3A Central regional on Rocket Hill. The Rockets (22-9) rapped out 13 hits and sophomore Emily Kisch tossed a 4-hitter in the 12-0 win as top-seeded Central advanced to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship game against the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between No. 2 Kaneland and No. 3 Genoa-Kingston.

  • Defense lifts Burlington Central again Feb 24, 2014 9:58 PM
The third-quarter blitz did it again for the Burlington Central girls basketball team. Trailing Sycamore 20-18 at halftime Monday night the Rockets, just as they did in Saturday’s regional championship win over St. Edward, turned it up a few notches to start the second half, leaving the stunned Spartans in their dust. Junior Aly DeTamble, pressed into a starting role due to Shelby Holt’s illness, and steady sophomore Kayla Ross spearheaded a defense that didn’t allow Sycamore to get the ball across half-court on five straight possessions. The result was a 10-0 run that catapulted the Rockets to a 42-28 win in the semifinals of the Class 3A Belvidere sectional.

  • Kaneland completes weekend sweep Feb 22, 2014 9:35 PM
Longtime rival Sycamore went from enemy No. 1 to Kaneland’s new favorite team in a span of about 90 minutes Saturday night in Maple Park. With a 50-44 win, Kaneland knocked the Spartans out of first place in the ultratight Northern Illinois Big XII East race with one game remaining. Now the Knights become big Spartans fans, because if Sycamore (18-7, 6-3) can beat conference-leader Morris (16-7, 7-2) Friday, Kaneland (15-9, 6-3) can claim its share of a conference championship by beating DeKalb on Senior Night.

  • Kaneland can’t get anything to drop in regional final loss Feb 21, 2014 10:58 PM
When junior Ally VanBogaert opened the second half of Friday’s Class 3A Plano championship game with a 3-point basket from the corner, Kaneland had overcome a cold start and 12-point deficit to tie No. 1 seed Sycamore at 18. Unfortuantely — and unbelievably — for the Knights, that shot with 7:32 left in the third quarter was their last one that went in. Kaneland went the final 15:28 without a field goal, getting just a pair of free throws from Marina Schaefer in a 40-20 loss.

  • Sycamore controls Burlington Central Jan 21, 2014 11:53 PM
It was a far different Sycamore boys basketball team that controlled host Burlington Central throughout Tuesday’s 64-49 nonconference game than the one the Rockets defeated 54-51 on Nov. 30. Nine players on the Sycamore basketball roster also played football for a successful team that lost to Montini in a Class 5A state semifinal on Nov. 23. Those players had only the benefit a walk-through before they faced Central at the Spartans’ annual Thanksgiving tournament, according to Spartans coach Drew Stacy.
