Hampshire battles back to beat Sycamore Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
There have been many nights this season when the Hampshire girls basketball team has not been able to battle back from an early deficit. Tuesday was not one of those nights. Trailing by as many as 12 point late in the second quarter, the Whip-Purs began their comeback with an 8-3 run to end the half. Then they came out of the locker room on fire, blitzing Sycamore with a 17-3 third quarter that led to an eventual 51-43 win in the opening round of the Class 3A Burlington Central regional.

Picture this: Wauconda wins at Marengo Dec 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Celebratory photo opportunities have been rare for the Wauconda boys basketball team. But the Bulldogs are determined to change the way people picture their program in Lake County. That determination was evident Saturday night when they faced Sycamore in the championship game of the 63rd annual E.C. Nichols Tournament. And answering every challenge gave Wauconda players and coaches the chance to joyfully pose for plenty of photos with the title plaque after a gritty 53-48 victory at Homer “Bill” Barry Gymnasium. “My mom just showed me the other night in the program that the last time we won this tournament was 1978,” said Wauconda senior Austin Swenson. “I was just shocked.”

Kaneland struggles with Sycamore’s press Dec 8, 2012 12:00 AM
Kaneland is still searching for an identity without the services of starting junior point guard Drew David. Sycamore unleashed a disruptive full court press throughout Saturday night’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East Division matchup, forcing the Knights into 23 turnovers. The host Spartans built a 19-7 first quarter advantage and kept Kaneland at arm’s length the rest of the way, securing a comfortable 60-46 victory.

Harte, Montini boot SycamoreNov 4, 2012 12:00 AM
It’s nice being able to turn to one of the best kickers in the state with the game on the line. What wasn’t so nice was for Sycamore to have to lose yet again to Montini Catholic in the state playoffs despite playing some great football. The 9-2 Broncos pulled out Saturday’s thrilling second-round Class 5A contest 24-22 after senior kicker Andrew Harte drilled a game-winning 34-yard field that sailed through the uprights with 1.1 seconds left on the clock.

Elgin hammers out split with Sycamore Mar 24, 2012 12:00 AM
If Saturdays season-opening doubleheader split is any indication, a 4-run lead wont be safe against the Elgin baseball team. The Maroons won the first game against Sycamore 7-4 by using a 7-run fourth inning to overcome a 4-0 deficit. They dropped the second game 10-8 in eight innings despite rallying for 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it 7-7.

Kaneland gets its revenge Feb 28, 2012 12:00 AM
After dropping a home game to Sycamore just over three weeks ago, Kaneland realized the Spartans were better than their 9-19 record suggested. The top-seeded Knights kept the pressure on throughout Tuesday night’s Rochelle Class 3A regional semifinal and secured a well-earned 55-45 win over their Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival.

Sycamore ousts Burlington Central Feb 27, 2012 12:00 AM
Burlington Central’s spirited rally came up just short. After trailing Sycamore by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter, the Rockets got within 7 a couple of times late in the game, but couldn’t come all the way back. The Spartans held on for a 76-67 win in the first round of the Class 3A Rochelle boys basketball regional Monday night.

Sycamore surprises Kaneland Feb 4, 2012 12:00 AM
Beating 5-16 Sycamore Saturday turned out to be just as hard for Kaneland as getting the game itself started. With officials thinking the 4:30 p.m. tip was supposed to be 7, by the time they showed the game had been delayed an hour. Kaneland appeared just as slow starting, falling behind by 10 at halftime and never catching up in a surprising 51-42 defeat.

Hunnicutt leads Burlington Central Jan 17, 2012 12:00 AM
The term for a star collapsing upon itself is supernova. The term for a defense collapsing upon a basketball star like Ray Hunnicutt is super risky. The results can be explosive in either case. Burlington Central’s fourth-year varsity guard had already penetrated his way to a team-best 19 points, but the senior’s ability to dish to teammates when Sycamore’s defense collapsed on him in the fourth quarter sparked the Rockets to a game-sealing 8-0 run and a 55-43 nonconference victory on Rocket Hill, the third straight win for Central (11-8).

Kaneland comes back at Sycamore Oct 14, 2011 12:00 AM
