Defense lifts Burlington Central againFeb 24, 2014 12:00 AM
The third-quarter blitz did it again for the Burlington Central girls basketball team. Trailing Sycamore 20-18 at halftime Monday night the Rockets, just as they did in Saturday’s regional championship win over St. Edward, turned it up a few notches to start the second half, leaving the stunned Spartans in their dust. Junior Aly DeTamble, pressed into a starting role due to Shelby Holt’s illness, and steady sophomore Kayla Ross spearheaded a defense that didn’t allow Sycamore to get the ball across half-court on five straight possessions. The result was a 10-0 run that catapulted the Rockets to a 42-28 win in the semifinals of the Class 3A Belvidere sectional.

  • Kaneland completes weekend sweepFeb 22, 2014 12:00 AM
Longtime rival Sycamore went from enemy No. 1 to Kaneland’s new favorite team in a span of about 90 minutes Saturday night in Maple Park. With a 50-44 win, Kaneland knocked the Spartans out of first place in the ultratight Northern Illinois Big XII East race with one game remaining. Now the Knights become big Spartans fans, because if Sycamore (18-7, 6-3) can beat conference-leader Morris (16-7, 7-2) Friday, Kaneland (15-9, 6-3) can claim its share of a conference championship by beating DeKalb on Senior Night.

  • Kaneland can’t get anything to drop in regional final lossFeb 21, 2014 12:00 AM
When junior Ally VanBogaert opened the second half of Friday’s Class 3A Plano championship game with a 3-point basket from the corner, Kaneland had overcome a cold start and 12-point deficit to tie No. 1 seed Sycamore at 18. Unfortuantely — and unbelievably — for the Knights, that shot with 7:32 left in the third quarter was their last one that went in. Kaneland went the final 15:28 without a field goal, getting just a pair of free throws from Marina Schaefer in a 40-20 loss.

  • Sycamore controls Burlington Central Jan 21, 2014 12:00 AM
It was a far different Sycamore boys basketball team that controlled host Burlington Central throughout Tuesday’s 64-49 nonconference game than the one the Rockets defeated 54-51 on Nov. 30. Nine players on the Sycamore basketball roster also played football for a successful team that lost to Montini in a Class 5A state semifinal on Nov. 23. Those players had only the benefit a walk-through before they faced Central at the Spartans’ annual Thanksgiving tournament, according to Spartans coach Drew Stacy.

  • Burlington Central knocks off Sycamore Nov 30, 2013 12:00 AM
Burlington Central demonstrated a March-like attitude on the final day of November. Strombom Boys Basketball Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday.

Ross’ defensive effort lifts Burlington Central Nov 23, 2013 12:00 AM
Kayla Ross knew what she had to do Saturday, and the Burlington Central sophomore was up to the challenge. Ross was assigned to shut down Sycamore sharpshooter Bailey Gilbert in Saturday’s final pool play game of the Central Thanksgiving Tournament. Shut Gilbert down she did, holding the Spartan junior to just 7 points on 2 of 8 shooting as the Rockets (3-0) earned a hard-fought 41-37 win, putting them in Tuesday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game against Machesney Park Harlem. BC lost the title game to Belvidere North last year.

A standing room only crowd packed Engh Community Field in Sycamore for the Big XII East Conference matchups of undefeated teams — Kaneland, the second-ranked team in Class 5A, and host Sycamore, No. 3 in the state. And the Spartan crowd simulating the proverbial “12th man” may have helped the Spartans steal a victory, as host Sycamore defeated Kaneland 31-21 to remain unbeaten on the season and in the conference and end Kaneland’s 35-game regular season winning streak — one that dates back to a Week 8 loss to Geneva four years ago.

  • Hampshire battles back to beat Sycamore Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
There have been many nights this season when the Hampshire girls basketball team has not been able to battle back from an early deficit. Tuesday was not one of those nights. Trailing by as many as 12 point late in the second quarter, the Whip-Purs began their comeback with an 8-3 run to end the half. Then they came out of the locker room on fire, blitzing Sycamore with a 17-3 third quarter that led to an eventual 51-43 win in the opening round of the Class 3A Burlington Central regional.

  • Picture this: Wauconda wins at Marengo Dec 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Celebratory photo opportunities have been rare for the Wauconda boys basketball team. But the Bulldogs are determined to change the way people picture their program in Lake County. That determination was evident Saturday night when they faced Sycamore in the championship game of the 63rd annual E.C. Nichols Tournament. And answering every challenge gave Wauconda players and coaches the chance to joyfully pose for plenty of photos with the title plaque after a gritty 53-48 victory at Homer “Bill” Barry Gymnasium. “My mom just showed me the other night in the program that the last time we won this tournament was 1978,” said Wauconda senior Austin Swenson. “I was just shocked.”
