  • Boys soccer: Streamwood's Camarena Fox Valley captain Nov 6, 2014 8:42 PM
Imagine after nine years of living in the same town, going to the same high school for the past three and your parents telling you prior to your senior year that the family is moving to another suburb in which you have to go to a totally different high school. And that you had to leave everything and everybody you knew behind, even those teammates you've played soccer for so long. That was the situation Alan Camarena was forced into this season, as he waved good bye to Burlington Central over the summer and hello to Streamwood, an 18-mile trek east.

  • Fox Valley runners poised to make an impact at state Nov 5, 2014 6:43 PM
For Streamwood senior girls’ cross-country standout Gabby Juarez, it was time to play with the big dogs. Juarez adjusted her running strategy a bit this year and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. Juarez recently won a Class 3A sectional individual title and will try to add some more hardware to her collection at Saturday’s state finals race in Peoria at Detweiller Park.

  • Streamwood headed to state soccer Final Four Nov 4, 2014 10:26 PM
It’s not everyday that 6-foot 4 Streamwood goalkeeper Sergio Blanco has an opposing keeper trying to screen him in the box that’s just as tall as him. But that’s what it came down to in the final seconds in Streamwood’s dramatic 2-1 Class 3A Barrington supersectional win over Lake Park Tuesday night. And before the Sabres (17-5-2) could punch their ticket to state they had to stop a Lake Park (20-2-4) corner kick from the left side with the clocked stopped at 18.2 seconds left that featured every Lancer in the box, including goalie Michael Jasiak.

  • Boys soccer: Scouting Streamwood vs. Lake Park Nov 3, 2014 4:03 PM
The Streamwood and Lake Park boys soccer teams may collectively be staring into a mirror, so to speak, when they step on the field Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Class 3A Barrington supersectional with a state berth at stake. As the tale of the tape shows it’s truly a toss up.

  • Bartlett-Streamwood’s Filipek UEC 50, 100 champ Nov 1, 2014 9:48 PM
The 50-yard freestyle is the most unforgiving race in a swim meet. The race is often broken down as “a start, a flip turn and a finish.” But mess up on any of those three, or during the two lengths of the pool that comprise the race, and someone else wins. Bartlett-Streamwood’s Kayla Filipek was the best in the 50 freestyle at Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Waubonsie Valley. The sophomore covered the distance in 24.24, six-tenths faster than second-placed Samantha Sauer from St. Charles North.

  • Boys soccer: Streamwood nails down first sectional title Nov 1, 2014 6:37 PM
Donnie Sosa and the Streamwood boys soccer team could have hung their heads Saturday after allowing their first postseason goal. Instead the Sabres tied the game less than 2 minutes later and Sosa headed home the game-winner in the first overtime as Streamwood won its first sectional championship, beating Rockford Boylan, 2-1, at the Class 3A DeKalb sectional.

  • Naperville North, Juarez take titles at St. Charles East Nov 1, 2014 4:12 PM
Naperville North didn’t leave much suspense at the Class 3A St. Charles East sectional Saturday morning at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve. By the time Emily Hamilton ran into the chute to take 11th place the Huskies had all five of their top runners in. That totaled up to a mere 32 points, well ahead of runner-up Geneva’s 101.

  • Streamwood lives to play another day Oct 29, 2014 11:22 PM
When Streamwood’s Donnie Sosa turned in a header 57 seconds into a Class 3A DeKalb sectional semifinal against Huntley Wednesday, the daunting task for the Sabre defense was clear. Hold on for another 79 minutes and 3 seconds and the postseason ride would continue.

  • Girls volleyball: South Elgin, Elgin earn wins at Elk Grove regional Oct 27, 2014 11:10 PM
Timing is everything when it comes to the playoffs. On Monday night Elgin High and South Elgin picked the ideal time to clean up their acts. Both limited their errors and survived to play another day with wins in the first round at the Class 4A Elk Grove girls volleyball regional. The Storm bounced back from an ugly regular-season finale loss to Larkin with a 25-13, 25-15 with over host Elk Grove while the Maroons snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 25-21, 25-15 win over Streamwood. South Elgin advances to play Maine East on Tuesday and Elgin will square off with Maine South.

  • Streamwood gets its revenge, regional title Oct 25, 2014 7:59 PM
Not long after the Streamwood boys soccer team was upset in last year’s regional semifinal as the top seed at Millennium Field, the mantra all along was nothing more than redemption. Seeing Larkin take home the regional hardware the Sabres believed was theirs was enough, but even when the critics stacked the deck against Streamwood this season, the team proved its doubters wrong by earning a top seed for the second straight year. And after Saturday’s 2-0 Class 3A Streamwood regional championship win over No. 3 Larkin, a two-time defending regional champ who had won 4 of its last 5 games, redemption is sweet.

  • Huntley’s Smith wins regional title Oct 25, 2014 7:41 PM
Huntley junior Keagan Smith beat the field on Saturday, winning the individual championship at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford boys cross country regional. Smith ran the course in a time of 15:03.22, almost 33 seconds better than Hononegah’s Jared Christiansen.

  • Jacobs’ Van Vlierbergen a regional champ Oct 25, 2014 6:46 PM
Lauren Van Vlierbergen, Gabby Juarez and Kelly Meehleib took the first steps toward Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday in convincing fashion. Van Vlierbergen, the Jacobs senior who finished fourth in the Class 3A state girls cross country meet last season, won the Class 3A Palatine regional Saturday while Juarez, Streamwood’s senior speedster who was 49th at state in 2013, was the individual champion at the Class 3A Glenbard North regional. Meehleib, a Huntley senior who did not qualify for state last year, was the champion at the Class 3A Rockford Guilford regional, also leading her team to the title.

  • Batavia runs River table again Oct 25, 2014 12:01 AM
Statistics were once famously included in a memorable quote about three types of lies. But there was no mistaking the dominance of Batavia Friday night as the Bulldogs rolled to their 26th consecutive Upstate Eight Conference River victory, 40-7, over Streamwood.

  • Fox Valley area teams gear up for volleyball postseason Oct 24, 2014 3:09 PM
The Road to Redbird opens for business Monday night as girls volleyball teams in all four classes around the state embark on the postseason. In the Fox Valley area, several interesting scenarios could develop as teams vie for a spot in the IHSA Final Four at Redbird Arena in Normal the weekend of Nov. 14-15.

  • Larkin, Streamwood will battle for regional soccer title Oct 22, 2014 10:46 PM
Somehow, someway, Larkin defender Inno Simental had 5 assists alone on throw-ins heading into postseason play. And somehow, someway, Moises Raya managed his only goal of the season on a header off a throw-in. The boys soccer postseason calls for some unconventional ways of winning sometimes as both No. 2 seed Dundee-Crown and No. 3 Larkin would know very well in consecutive years, but the fact that Simental assisted twice on goals off throw-ins and Raya headed in the game-winning with 6:36 remaining of a 2-1 Royals win in a Class 3A Streamwood semifinal matchup Wednesday will definitely add to the tale that ties D-C and Larkin together in postseason action.
