    If seeds hold, the Class 4A Rockford Guilford girls basketball sectional will be three-fourths Fox Valley Conference. Dundee-Crown, Crystal Lake South and Huntley were all awarded No. 1 seeds Thursday when the IHSA released the postseason rankings.

    Don’t expect the Elgin Community College men’s basketball players to start walking around with big heads now that the Spartans have cracked the top 20 national rankings. Checking egos at the door is the main reason this team is ranked in the first place. ECC (18-6), the No. 20 team in the Feb. 3 NJCAA Division II poll, is enjoying success because the Spartans enjoy sharing the ball, not to mention the credit, their coach says.

    Having first names that end in ‘y’ is not the only thing that Geneva’s five freshmen have in common. They’re also very, very good. Debuting in their first regional at Geneva on Wednesday, they combined to chip in with five counting scores as the Vikings cruised to victory with 146.425 points, easily surpassing the 130.85 tallied by U-46 co-op.

    The St. Charles North boys basketball team showed few signs of any rust on Friday night despite a 13-day layoff. The North Stars didn’t miss a beat as they cruised past Streamwood on the road to 63-27 win in Upstate Eight Conference River Division action.

    When it comes to changing the world, every small step counts, says Bill Klaves, associate director for Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley. That’s the idea behind the organization’s 25th annual Walk-A-Thon Feb. 28 at Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee. The event will raise funds for providing clean drinking water in Guatemala. “It would allow families in rural communities to have safe, drinkable water,” Klaves said.

    It was an inside-outside combination that Aurora Central Catholic couldn’t detain. Senior center Cece Rapp provided the inside presence for St. Edward with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots while Ryann Scully poured in 5 shots from beyond the arc in scoring 16 points, all in the first half. The Green Wave’s dynamic duo keyed a 61-39 win over ACC in Metro Suburban West girls basketball action in Elgin Thursday night.

     
  • Girls gymnastics: Mahoney injury tough loss for Prairie Ridge co-op Jan 28, 2015 6:32 PM
    State runner-up Prairie Ridge (a co-op team comprised of all the District 155 schools) heads into the girls gymnastics postseason looking to overcome a major loss to the team. Cary-Grove senior Riley Mahoney, one of the team’s top all-rounders, is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in early January. Mahoney suffered an injury to the other knee last year.

    There is certainly not a dearth of potential all-state wrestlers in the Upstate Eight Conference this season. Friday night at Geneva, St. Charles East, the defending tournament champion, and Metea Valley, on the cusp of its first Valley Division title in program history, advanced seven competitors to the semifinals on Saturday.

    With February right around the corner, this is the time of year where high school wrestling kicks into high gear. Up first on the docket: conference tournaments, specifically Friday and Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference gathering at Geneva High School. All 16 UEC teams will compete for the team title and medals will be awarded to the five place-finishers in each weight class.

    Larkin point guard Charles Sanders admitted that after winning the Hinkle Holiday Classic to end 2014, he didn’t see the Royals’ 3-game losing streak coming. But what Sanders also admitted to coach Deryn Carter before Larkin took out Streamwood 70-53 in Upstate Eight River boys basketball action Thursday night in Elgin to get off the snide was that he needed to step up his senior leadership to right the Royals’ ship.

     
  • Ultimately, Carmel Catholic able to finish off Streamwood Jan 19, 2015 7:14 PM
    A lot of times this season Carmel Catholic’s boys basketball team has played well in spurts, but at times finishing games has been an issue. On Monday afternoon, Corsairs coach Zack Ryan left it to the boys to take care of business themselves. Carmel had control of the game against Streamwood but almost let the game out of their hands. Ultimately, the Corsairs got past Streamwood 75-68 in their final game of Lake Zurich’s MLK tournament.

     
  • Bartlett/Streamwood swims strong in Coleman’s honor Jan 17, 2015 6:29 PM
    The Mike Coleman Memorial Invitational isn’t just another meet on the schedule for the Bartlett/Streamwood co-op boys swim team. Sure, it was a home meet, but there’s a lot more to it for the Sabrehawks. Its namesake was a former team MVP and record holder in the 200-yard medley relay and 200 free relay, who passed away in 2011. That’s why the past couple of weeks of training were dedicated solely to racing well against a slate of formidable competition. That the Sabrehawks did, finishing fourth with 63 points, behind repeat champion Plainfield, which won eight of the 10 events and finished with 155 points.
