  • U-46 fires substitute teacher who taunted student Feb 19, 2015 2:11 PM
Elgin Area School District U-46 fired the substitute teacher who taunted a Streamwood High School student in class with a crude drawing and an insulting caption, a school official said Wednesday. The teacher, who was not identified, had teased Stephen Davis, a 330-pound, 15-year-old freshman, during a math class last Thursday. We are not allowing this substitute teacher back in U-46,” said John Heiderscheidt, the district’s coordinator of safety and security.

  • Dinkheller’s officiating career honored with IBCA Hall induction Feb 11, 2015 9:45 PM
Elgin resident Jim Dinkheller had modest goals when he enrolled in a basketball officiating class taught by late Elgin legend Pete Kovacs in 1980. Talked into the class by Kovacs, who taught the Elgin Community College-affiliated course at Elgin’s Kimball Middle School, Dinkheller figured he could officiate to stay in shape through the winter months and earn a little cash to boot. Little did the Larkin graduate know it would lead to a 34-year officiating career and his eventual induction to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The longtime referee learned last month he is one of eight officials slated for induction at this year’s IBCA banquet in May, a level of recognition he never expected.

  • Elgin CC enjoying one of most successful seasons Feb 5, 2015 10:46 AM
Don’t expect the Elgin Community College men’s basketball players to start walking around with big heads now that the Spartans have cracked the top 20 national rankings. Checking egos at the door is the main reason this team is ranked in the first place. ECC (18-6), the No. 20 team in the Feb. 3 NJCAA Division II poll, is enjoying success because the Spartans enjoy sharing the ball, not to mention the credit, their coach says.
