  • St. Charles North’s Kelly Manski and Geneva’s Megan Kozlow battle for the ball in the first half on Tuesday, April 9.

Manski, St. Charles North ready for Geneva Apr 9, 2013 12:00 AM
In one of the area’s silliest girls soccer traditions that makes a serious point, St. Charles North every year takes a plastic toy, dubs it the award for the team’s player of the match — and then players go about decorating this toy through the season as it moves from player to player. A year ago, the toy was a plastic lawn mower. This year, the players are decorating a plastic yellow school bus. And Tuesday, the award went to a player who’s made the wheels go round and round for the North Stars for four years and kept the team motoring through a 2-0 Upstate Eight River Conference Division victory over Geneva: Kelly Manski.

  • Kaneland claims title at East Moline Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Showing strength over all three levels, Kaneland won East Moline's United Township Kiwanis Invitational for the first time in its seven trips there. "It was one of those where we hit on almost every cylinder," said Knights coach Eric Baron. "We scored in every event." Getting what Baron called "a pleasant surprise" out of pole vaulter Dylan Kuiper and a personal-best shot put mark of 52 feet, 4 inches from Nate Dyer among many highlights, Kaneland's 260 points topped United's 220.50, Geneseo's 204 and Rock Island's 184.

  • Trio of all-staters lead St. Charles East Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Charles East coach Tim Wolf rearranged his girls track and field lineup in an unusual fashion on Saturday. But the Saints' three returning all-staters — Britney Williams, Jordan Shead and Torree Scull — all showcased versatility in abundance to lead St. Charles East past Glenbard South for supremacy of the eight-team St. Charles North Invitational.

Neuqua Valley shuts out St. Charles North Apr 5, 2013 12:00 AM
This wasn't your typical baseball game between Neuqua Valley and St. Charles North. That was perfectly fine with the Wildcats. Neuqua Valley made surprisingly quick work of its Upstate Eight Conference rival Friday in Naperville, stunning the North Stars with a 10-0 five-inning victory.

  • South Elgin’s Victoria Watt (8), Paige Allen (1) and Kara Rodriguez (6) are all smiles after the Storm recorded the final out to beat St. Charles North during Friday’s game in St. Charles.

South Elgin hands St. Charles North 1st loss Apr 5, 2013 12:00 AM
The South Elgin softball team made a convincing statement Friday that it has every intention of fighting for the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division championship this season. The Storm used a gutty pitching performance from junior Paige Allen and a 2-run home run from standout junior catcher Alyssa Buddle, as well as a strong 3-for-4 day from senior shortstop Kara Rodriguez, to beat Northwestern recruit Sabrina Rabin and St. Charles North, 4-1, in a UEC crossover game at North.

  • Congrats SCN coaches: Gould headed to Hall; Vostal reaches 200 wins Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
This weekend is the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association annual spring clinic. Retiring St. Charles North football coach Mark Gould knows it well, but would never have expected to be part of the event's highlight. One day earlier this year Gould opened his mail and discovered he'd been selected for the IHSFCA Hall of Fame. Inductions are Saturday in Champaign. "I remember when the envelope came I thought it was when the (annual IHSFCA) clinic was coming up. I was completely blindsided," Gould said.

  • Lake Zurich runs smoothly in Tune Up Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Lake Zurich is making it look easy. The Bears took a 2-0 record into last week's Spring Break Tune Up Tournament at Hoffman Estates. After cruising past Huntley 10-1 and hammering an undermanned Fremd squad, 15-1, the Bears had plenty of optimism at Hoffman Estates and it shined through. The Bears pounced on West Chicago 13-2 won a hard fought 5-2 game against Warren, and blitzed a relatively new Taft team 16-0 to advance to the championship game where they dominated Bartlett, 10-2.

A St. Charles couple has sued School District 303, arguing their 18-year-old son with autism was mistreated by officials and teachers at St. Charles North High School after his parents pushed for his inclusion in advanced classes during the 2011-2102 school year. Former state champs find mixed results in collegeApr 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Kathryn Kat' Warner received a humbling dose of reality when arriving at East Carolina University in Greenville, S.C. to continue her track and field career at the next level. "It is a whole different world compared to a high school setting," said Warner, a 2010 Batavia graduate who shook off nearly two years of injuries to win the Class 3A state championship in the 300-meter hurdles as a senior. "Once you enter the college world (in track and field), everyone is a state champion." Warner is one of five former state champions from the area in track and field currently competing at the collegiate level.

In celebration of the opening week of the high school baseball/softball season, here are 9 things on my mind:

St. Charles North dropped the first game of their boys volleyball championship match against Schaumburg with back-to-back hitting errors. But the North Stars more than atoned for their consecutive miscues against the Saxons Saturday afternoon at the 12-team West Aurora tournament. St. Charles North forged the equalizer in the second game and hit the Saxons with a resounding 19-3 run in the rubber game to win their first significant tournament title in program history with the 25-27, 25-18, 25-11 victory in Aurora.

Scouting Tri-Cities area boys volleyball teamsMar 22, 2013 12:00 AM
In just its second year with a boys volleyball program in 2012, Geneva went 17-12 and tied St. Charles East for the Upstate Eight Conference River title. While starting a team can often lead to years of growing pains and losing seasons, Vikings coach KC Johnsen thinks he knows why the Vikings have been successful so quickly. "We've been lucky that some really good athletes have decided to give volleyball a try," Johnsen said. "That makes a lot of difference. They pick it up very fast and move well on the court and are competitive guys and jump a little bit. Makes it a quicker jump start. (We wouldn't have won so fast) if we didn't have such good athletes."

  • Stern, St. Charles North sink St. Charles EastMar 21, 2013 12:00 AM
One play summarized the one-sided St. Charles North girls water polo team victory over visiting St. Charles East on Thursday night. Lexy Kos' second goal of the half for St. Charles East gave the Saints seemingly a glimmer of hope when her shot found the desired location with less than 10 seconds remaining before halftime. But the North Stars' Sarah Stern had the ultimate response. The three-year senior member of the North Stars launched a shot from the mid-mark of the North Stars' pool — roughly 38 feet — and the arching shot eluded the Saints' keeper with a second remaining before the intermission. St. Charles North was in firm control during what proved-to-be a 17-4 verdict over the Saints at home.

St. Charles E. tips rival behind Phelps’ 7 goals Mar 21, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Charles East's boys water polo team didn't talk trash during Thursday's cross-town battle with St. Charles North. But the Saints cleaned up at the most opportune time, as senior Mitch Phelps' rebound of a shot from teammate Max Schmitt that was initially turned away by North Stars goalie Collin Bawolek found the back of the net with 2:26 remaining in the fourth period.
