    St. Charles North quarterback Nathan Didier scored 3 touchdowns, including the clincher with :21 left to help defeat host Rolling Meadows 34-22 in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs on Saturday night. “You better believe that this was sweet,” said Didier. “It just feels so good to be part of what I hope is the beginning of a new legacy at St. Charles North.” The ninth-seeded North Stars (8-2) tied the school record for wins in a season.

    Even after a less-than-stellar game one performance by host Neuqua Valley, no one was surprised to see Tuesday’s regional semifinal go three games. The 25-11 Wildcats have played too well the last several weeks — including a 3-game win over these same St. Charles North Stars in last week’s UEC crossover battle — to let anyone walk over them. So sure enough, the Wildcats rebounded from an error-filled 25-17 setback in game one to even things up with a 25-23 thriller. But that’s when St. Charles North (27-9) picked up its game and its blocking and avenged last week’s loss by taking the decisive third set 25-15 to earn a shot at top-seeded Benet Academy in Thursday’s regional title game.

    Waubonsie Valley senior quarterback Zach Bennema and Batavia senior defensive end Josh Leonhard have earned Daily Herald MVP honors for their performances in Week 8 of the high school football season. Bennema was prolific both as a passer and ball-carrier in Waubonsie Valley’s 25-28 victory over Neuqua Valley, while Leonhard intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown along with providing great all-around play in the Bulldogs’ 26-20 decision over Geneva.

    Nick Graham’s third-minute strike helped turn the momentum toward St. Charles North early in Wednesday night’s opening-round match of the Elk Grove regional. Garrett Morgando later doubled the advantage as the North Stars posted a 2-0 victory over the host Grens (4-12-2) in Class 3A regional semifinal. The victory secured St. Charles North (11-5-4) a berth in the regional final on Saturday at 3 p.m. against No. 5 Rolling Meadows (10-7-3). Meadows defeated Addison Trail 3-0 in the second match at Elk Grove on Wednesday.

Neuqua Valley and St. Charles North met for the second time Tuesday in St. Charles, this time in a matchup between the Upstate Eight Conference Valley champion Wildcats and the North Stars, who shared the River side with St. Charles East and Geneva and earned the tiebreaker with the fewest sets lost. The Wildcats reversed an earlier 3-set loss to the North Stars with a 3-set win of their own. showing plenty of fight after a rough opening set and then holding off 3 match points for an 11-25, 25-22, 26-24 victory in the UEC first place crossover game.

    FORSYTH — Gi Furrie is one of the more talented sophomore golfers in the state. “I knew I had the (physical) game,” the St. Charles North underclassman said. “I have been working on my mental game.” On the final day of the girls golf season at the Class AA state finals at Hickory Point Golf Course, Furrie ended her year with a level-par 36 on her inward nine to snare top-13 status with her 36-hole total of 157 on Saturday. Furrie finished the year with a 4-over 76 after overcoming a tough day around the greens during opening-round play on Friday.

She has captured individual Upstate Eight Conference River Division titles, numerous tournament crowns and led the Vikings to conference and sectional team championships. Heading into the weekend, however, she had never won an individual sectional title.

    St. Charles North’s Audrey Ernst crossed the finish line at the Upstate Eight Conference cross country meet, then turned to congratulate her competitors running through the chute. There were plenty to congratulate because the slightly built, blonde-haired freshman won the meet on Saturday. Ernst outdueled familiar foe Gabby Juarez of Streamwood by .6 seconds, winning in 17 minutes, 31.1 seconds on the undulating three-mile course at Lords Park in Elgin.
