Crosstown battle goes St. Charles North’s way May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Good things happen when St. Charles North's Nick McCullough scores goals and Mike Jasica wins face-offs. McCullough didn't score though in the first half in the annual, highly anticipated match against St. Charles East at East Side Sports Complex in St. Charles. So, he made up for it in the second half, as did the North Stars' defense in a 15-5 victory.

Klimek, Fortsch keep winning in perspective at Waubonsie Valley May 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Success isn't just about wins. Sure, you play to win the game, but the friendships and life lessons that come from playing help shape these high schoolers as they head off to college and adulthood. There's no denying that Waubonsie Valley is struggling on the field, but that hasn't stopped it from being a special season for the Warriors in other ways.

Youthful St. Charles North searching for consistency May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Perhaps St. Charles North baseball coach Todd Genke should have figured this would be a challenging season when the team's annual trip to downstate Marion was shortened due to a late-March snowstorm. Whatever the case, it definitely has not been business as usual for the North Stars this season.

Batavia’s bats come alive at St. Charles N. May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Less than 24 hours after being held to 3 base hits — 2 of them of the infield variety — in a 3-0 loss to St. Charles North, Batavia's baseball team feasted on North Stars pitching Saturday. Needing a sweep to remain tied for first place in the loss column with Upstate Eight Conference River Division co-leader St. Charles East, the Bulldogs (22-6, 16-6) accomplished the feat, taking both games from host St. Charles North (13-15, 9-12).

Batavia repeats UEC River title May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Brad Nelson picked up right where Bob Kummer and Nelson's girls team left off. Nelson guided the Batavia boys tennis team to the Upstate Eight River Division conference championship Saturday in his first season as the boys coach, replacing the longtime boys coach Kummer. "We won the girls one in the fall on these courts (at Elgin) actually. To come back in the spring with the guys is special to keep things going for coach Kummer with what he left us with after winning it last year," Nelson said.

St. Charles North’s Wright tosses 3-hitter at Batavia May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
As the high school baseball regular season winds down, St. Charles North is no longer a contender in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division race. However, the North Stars could play a big determining role in which team does capture the UEC River title. Sophomore southpaw Cory Wright (4-2) fired a 3-hit complete game to help lead the North Stars (13-13, 9-10) to a 3-0 triumph over Batavia (20-6, 14-6) Friday afternoon in Batavia.

St. Charles East turns table on West Aurora May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
The St. Charles East girls track team watched helplessly two weeks as West Aurora garnered its fourth consecutive Kane County championship by more than 30 points. But the Saints more than returned the favor Thursday night at the Blackhawks' Class 3A sectional, winning all four relays and qualifying nine individuals to deny West Aurora its third postseason crown in the last four years.

St. Charles North wins 9th straight May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Sabrina Rabin set the tone, and Batavia never truly recovered. The St. Charles North junior walked to lead off the teams' Upstate Eight Conference River Division softball game Wednesday afternoon and was soon home on back-to-back stolen bases and a throwing error. Twenty-one batters in all would come to the plate for St. Charles North in the first two innings; a dozen scored, and the North Stars cruised to their ninth consecutive win with a 13-1 slaughter-rule victory over the Bulldogs in St. Charles.

Waubonsie Valley nets UEC title May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Some electrical problems left St. Charles North's scoreboard partially operational for much of Wednesday's Upstate Eight Conference girls soccer title match between Valley Division winners Waubonsie Valley and the hosts, winners of the River Division. When the scoreboard lit fully late in the second half, it reinforced what everyone in the stands and on the field knew — Waubonsie Valley was on its way to a comfortable 3-0 victory and its seventh straight victory.

St. Charles N. takes command of River May 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Twelve seniors dot the St. Charles North boys volleyball program, and their collective experience as upperclassmen paid huge dividends Tuesday night at home. In a critical showdown with fellow unbeaten Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival Geneva, the North Stars never trailed in either game of their straight-sets 25-15 and 25-18 victory over the Vikings in St. Charles.

St. Charles North’s hot hitting continues May 7, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Charles North softball coach Tom Poulin has been around high school athletics long enough to know all about letdowns after a big win. So it figured Poulin would be a little nervous about Tuesday's Upstate Eight River game at Elgin. His North Stars had just come off a 10-0 rout of rival St. Charles East to take over first place in the River the day before, and Poulin was a little concerned about how focused his team might be on Tuesday. Well coach, as the song says: Don't worry, be happy. And happy Poulin was after his team drubbed the Maroons 8-0, banging out 18 hits in the process.

Critical call goes Larkin’s way vs. St. Charles N. May 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Not surprisingly, each coach had a different opinion on critical plays in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday. An appeal by Larkin coach Matt Esterino resulted in the home plate umpire calling a St. Charles North runner out after ruling the runner did not touch third base on what would have been a game-tying double. Royals pitcher Jack McCracken got the next batter to groundout to end the game, giving Larkin a 2-1 Upstate Eight River Division victory in Elgin.
