Batavia coaches had a plan for Patrick Redmond Saturday at the West Aurora Stampede, but the senior had his own ideas. Redmond went out at lightning quick pace and was able to keep it up, running a career-best time of 15:28 to take third while leading the Bulldogs to a third-place finish in the 13-team field despite missing No. 1 runner Ryan Wieties.

  • St. Charles North rolls over Streamwood Oct 11, 2014 12:14 AM
St. Charles North needed a win to become playoff eligible. Streamwood just needed a win. Both teams knew going into Friday night’s game they were going to see the best out of each other and turnovers would be huge. It would be 3 Sabre miscues that swung the momentum, and the game, in favor of the North Stars as they secured at least playoff eligibility with a 44-6 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win at Millennium Field in Streamwood.

  • St. Charles North volleyball making difference off the court Oct 10, 2014 10:04 AM
St. Charles North volleyball player Taryn Dal Degan said her family rings the bell for the Salvation Army during the holiday season. They make sandwiches for Lazarus House to distribute to people who are hungry. The senior setter said one of the quotes they like at her National Honor Society meetings is: the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

  • St. Charles N. wins title, but Batavia surprises field Oct 8, 2014 7:42 PM
Batavia senior Lauren Anderson really had no idea when she sat down at the scorer’s table Wednesday what her round of 90 would mean to her team. But when she found out she was all smiles, as was the entire Bulldogs’ contingent. For the first time since winning back-to-back regional titles in 2008 and 2009 and a runner-up regional finish in 2010, Batavia will play as a team in the sectional.

  • Wicinski era winding down at Geneva — for volleyball Oct 8, 2014 3:48 PM
Any senior playing in their final few matches of their high school career is going to be filled with plenty of mixed emotions this time of year. Geneva senior Kelsey Wicinski is certainly no exception.

  • Batavia clinches UEC River title Oct 7, 2014 10:40 PM
Batavia didn’t beat St. Charles North during Tuesday’s Upstate Eight Conference game in St. Charles. That didn’t mean that the Bulldogs didn’t leave as winners though. They wrapped up a conference title while senior standout Ian Larson had his arms wrapped around the Fox Traveling Trophy — awarded to the top Tri-Cities team every year — something the Bulldogs earned despite having to settle for a hard-earned 1-1 tie against the North Stars.

  • Jacobs claims crown at Geneva regional Oct 7, 2014 9:50 PM
With heavyweight boys golf programs like Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North in the field, Jacobs felt overlooked as a potential favorite to win Tuesday’s Class 3A Geneva regional. But the person whose opinion mattered most to Jacobs’ players certainly liked the Golden Eagles’ title chances. “Our goal was to win the regional,” Jacobs coach Gary Conrad said. “I just knew these guys had the ability to do it.”

  • Team effort lifts Naperville Central Oct 4, 2014 9:37 PM
Naperville Central relied on a true team effort Saturday to win the St. Charles North Invitational at Leroy Oakes in St. Charles. The Redhawks didn't have anyone run in the lead pack and it took awhile before the first Naperville Central runner ran into the chute. But once Geoffrey McCullough came in, taking ninth in 15:35, his teammates followed close behind. That pack running proved the difference for Naperville Central (97 points) finishing ahead of Prairie Ridge (134), Batavia (151), Marmion (156) and Sandburg (171).

  • St. Charles East rolls by St. Charles North Oct 4, 2014 9:18 PM
It was unseasonably cold at Norris Stadium for Saturday’s crosstown rivalry game between St. Charles North and St. Charles East. An on and off again drizzle also forced both squads to deal with a slick surface, but it did little to slow the Saints attack as they prevailed convincingly, 5-1, in Upstate Eight River play.

It's a short list of runners that St. Charles North's Audrey Ernst hasn't beat in her breakthrough freshman season. The list got a little shorter Saturday.

  • Neuqua Valley, St. Charles East perfect in UEC Oct 1, 2014 7:18 PM
St. Andrews’ reputation for its greens being the last line of defense was on ample display for the twin divisions of the Upstate Eight Conference golf tournament Wednesday. But the speed, vastness and treacherous undulations of the greens did not stop Neuqua Valley and St. Charles East from completing flawless seasons at the boys championships in West Chicago.

  • Halfway home, breaking down playoff possibilities Sep 30, 2014 9:42 AM
It seems like I say this every year about this time — and here I go again. I can’t believe how fast time is flying. Last weekend (at halftime to be precise) marked the official halfway point of the high school football regular season.

  • St. Charles East’s depth sinks St. Charles North Sep 30, 2014 9:03 PM
St. Charles East’s girls tennis team may not feature any top-32 individual players this season but depth appears to be on its side. Thanks to a singles sweep from Olivia Gapuz, Kelsey Straumann and Haley Jeanes, the Saints (8-5, 4-1) scored a decisive 5-2 triumph over cross-town rival St. Charles North (5-5, 2-3) in their annual Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual match Tuesday afternoon at St. Charles East.

The Warriors' defending Upstate Eight Conference champion hit all 18 greens in regulation, touring St. Andrews Golf & Country Club in 1-under par on each nine. The resulting 69 by the reigning Class AA state runner-up powered Waubonsie Valley to a 321 total as Kayla McHale and Arushi Singh complemented the championship performance with fifth- and sixth-place scores of 79 and 81.

  • Smith, Huntley leg out runner-up Bartlett finishes Sep 27, 2014 7:46 PM
Huntley senior Keagan Smith was glad he didn’t feel hamstrung in the final mile of Bartlett’s 13th Annual Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invitational. Smith’s powerful finishing surge helped him break up Lincoln-Way’s top two runners, Tommy Kolacki and Ian Peterson, and put him just 1.5 seconds behind Kolacki at the finish line Saturday morning at Sunrise Park. Smith finished the 3-mile race in 15:39.5. “Lately this season I still haven’t had something like that, and it felt good to have it again,” Smith said of his closing kick. “Usually around mile two my hamstrings go out, but today they never went out and I was feeling good.” Kolacki and Peterson were among four runners in the top seven as Lincoln-Way Central topped Huntley 33-61 for the team title. Fremd took third with 79.
