Saturday and for the next week, the focus shifts to the clock, where times and finishes are what matters. Swimming’s postseason starts with Saturday’s sectional meets and continues through the Nov. 21-22 state meet at Evanston.

    Cary-Grove didn’t do much to surprise St. Charles North in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs Saturday in St. Charles. The Trojans didn’t need to. They ran their triple option with great success while their defense didn’t give up a point. The North Stars scored a pair of defensvie touchdowns but it was far too little in a 35-14 loss.

    PEORIA — Maybe it’s the running, and the way the body responds. Cross country runners often appear to have taken their last breath in the moments after crossing the finish line, but a half-hour later, they’re ready to do it again. Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer is an example of that ability to rebound. She finished 11th — eighth in team scoring to help Geneva to a 12th-place finish in Saturday’s Class 3A championship race — was typically exhausted, and then all smiles not long after.

    St. Charles North quarterback Nathan Didier scored 3 touchdowns, including the clincher with :21 left to help defeat host Rolling Meadows 34-22 in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs on Saturday night. “You better believe that this was sweet,” said Didier. “It just feels so good to be part of what I hope is the beginning of a new legacy at St. Charles North.” The ninth-seeded North Stars (8-2) tied the school record for wins in a season.
