    The story of Catherine Kitz may not be a miracle, but it's close. The Montini senior distance runner was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 4 months old. She runs a fine line between appreciating her physical ability and resenting the confinements of the disease. Cystic fibrosis, for which there is treatment but no cure, is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes mucus to build up and clog parts of the body, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website. The organs affected most are the lungs and pancreas — ironic, Broncos coach Pete Connelly notes, since lungs are among a distance runner's most vital organs.

    The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering free vessel safety checks to all boaters to look for problems and ensure each meets the minimum state and federal safety requirements. Two exam sessions will be held from 10 a.m. until finished on Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 25, at Bald Knob Marina, 515 Bald Knob Road in Johnsburg.

Retiring St. Charles North football coach Mark Gould knows it well, but would never have expected to be part of the event's highlight. One day earlier this year Gould opened his mail and discovered he'd been selected for the IHSFCA Hall of Fame. Inductions are Saturday in Champaign. "I remember when the envelope came I thought it was when the (annual IHSFCA) clinic was coming up. I was completely blindsided," Gould said.

West Aurora, whose teams are known as the Blackhawks, is wisely doing its part to increase integrity in the use of its namesake. As part of a process begun in the fall of 2011 and implemented this school year, an accurate depiction of Black Hawk — not technically a chief but certainly a legendary leader of the Sauk and Fox people in Illinois and Wisconsin of the late 18th and early 19th centuries — has been installed as the symbol of West Aurora.
