A story as beautiful as a rose May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
The story of Catherine Kitz may not be a miracle, but it's close. The Montini senior distance runner was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 4 months old. She runs a fine line between appreciating her physical ability and resenting the confinements of the disease. Cystic fibrosis, for which there is treatment but no cure, is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes mucus to build up and clog parts of the body, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website. The organs affected most are the lungs and pancreas — ironic, Broncos coach Pete Connelly notes, since lungs are among a distance runner's most vital organs.

Fans want to drag Cubs, Wrigley into 21st century Apr 9, 2013 12:00 AM
The friendly confines of Wrigley Field hosted baseball for the 100th straight year Monday as the Chicago Cubs welcomed fans for the first home game of the 2013 season. Congrats SCN coaches: Gould headed to Hall; Vostal reaches 200 wins Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
This weekend is the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association annual spring clinic. Retiring St. Charles North football coach Mark Gould knows it well, but would never have expected to be part of the event's highlight. One day earlier this year Gould opened his mail and discovered he'd been selected for the IHSFCA Hall of Fame. Inductions are Saturday in Champaign. "I remember when the envelope came I thought it was when the (annual IHSFCA) clinic was coming up. I was completely blindsided," Gould said.

West Aurora takes seriously how it honors Black Hawk Mar 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Using Native American images and names to denote a school mascot or athletic team is a highly sensitive issue. West Aurora, whose teams are known as the Blackhawks, is wisely doing its part to increase integrity in the use of its namesake. As part of a process begun in the fall of 2011 and implemented this school year, an accurate depiction of Black Hawk — not technically a chief but certainly a legendary leader of the Sauk and Fox people in Illinois and Wisconsin of the late 18th and early 19th centuries — has been installed as the symbol of West Aurora.
