Glenbard North’s road to East Peoria: In the Rolling Meadows regional, defeated Wheaton North (7-2) and Willowbrook (7-0); in the Bartlett sectional, defeated St. Charles North (10-4) and Conant (6-5); in the Rosemont Stadium supersectional, defeated Oak Park (4-0). Warren’s tournament history: The Blue Devils are making their second appearance downstate and are playing in their first semifinal. In 1980, the Blue Devils lost in the quarterfinals to Lockport (9-3). Glenbard North’s tournament history: The Panthers are making their third appearance downstate. In both 1996 and 2001, they finished third. In 1996, they defeated Chicago Washington (11-0) in the quarterfinals, lost to Moline (10-2) in the semifinals and defeated Chatham Glenwood (2-0) in the third-place game. In 2001, they defeated Fremd (2-0) in the quarterfinals, lost to Normal Community (2-0) in the semifinals and defeated Belleville West (1-0 in 10 innings) in the third-place game. Coaches: Bryan McNulty, Warren, 1st season; Josh Sanew, Glenbard North, 4th season. Today’s starters: Jana Wagner, Warren (14-3, 3.48 ERA); Cece Dopart, Glenbard North (26-4, 1.00 ERA) Scouting Warren: The Blue Devils have been a postseason surprise after finishing third in the North Suburban Lake Division with an 8-4 record behind Lake Zurich (10-2) and Libertyville (9-3). They lost two of their final five games during the regular season. Unlike like season, when center fielder Megan Sowa (Drake) led them to a sectional championship, the Blue Devils have won without a major star. “We’re just a scrappy team that has a bunch of above-average kids and play together pretty well,” first-year coach Bryan McNulty said. “It seems like when we win, it’s one kid that you didn’t expect that just comes up big. Every girl in our lineup has taken that turn to do that.” Offensively, senior left fielder Michelle Vasen leads the way. She’s enjoyed a breakout season with 60 hits (.469 batting average), which includes 14 doubles. She is the team’s only .400 hitter. The Blue Devils have also received timely production from Shannon McKeon (.331 BA, 11 2B), Megan Scott (.273 BA, 5 HR, 39 RBI), Sabrina Trevino (.246 BA, team-leading 6 HRs, 8 2B), Rachele Belletini (.352 BA), Jaz Bonke (.294 BA), Jodie Hurd (.237 BA, 4 HR), Amber Leneau (.324 BA, 5 2B) and Crystal Pennell (.265 BA, 6 2B). In the circle, Palm Beach Atlantic-bound Jana Wagner, the team’s three-year varsity ace, has shined in the state tournament, throwing 9 innings and yielding just 2 runs against New Trier and allowing only 1 run to Barrington in the supersectional. “We’ve become really close as a team, and we’ve built a special bond,” said Vasen, who was 3-for-4 with a double against Barrington. “We’ve definitely dug deep, and we’ve been leaving everything on the field, like our last game.” Scouting Glenbard North: It’s been nearly a month (May 17) since the Panthers lost a game. They closed the regular season with four straight wins, before outscoring their two regional opponents 14-2. Their supersectional victory gave them their second 30-win season in a row. Little senior right-hander Cece Dopart (5 feet 6) is 26-4 with a 1.00 ERA and 303 strikeouts (34 walks) in 203 innings. “We know they got a really good pitcher that seems to mirror (Allison) Quigley from New Trier quite a bit,” Warren coach Bryan McNulty said. “We’re just going to have to be tough and patient with our at-bats, and do what we’ve done so far, use some of our speed and stuff like that. Obviously coming from the (DuPage Valley Conference), they’re going to be a pretty good softball team.” The Panthers feature a lot of good hitters, including junior center fielder Sarah Petzold (.513 BA, 5 HR, 12 2B, 34 RBI), Alex Caliva (.469 BA, 12 2B, Sydney Benz (.407 BA, 13 2B, 6 HR) and Heather Sperlazzo (.386 BA). Up next: Winner advances to Saturday’s state championship game (5:30 p.m.) against the winner of today’s other semifinal between Sandburg (23-15) and Lincoln-Way East (27-10). Loser plays in Saturday’s third-place game, which starts at 3 p.m. — Joe Aguilar

  • Sanew, Glenbard North making a good impression Jun 12, 2014 10:04 PM
Seven years ago Josh Sanew was heading out to coach a summer league baseball game when Glenbard North principal John Mensik asked if he’d like to interview for the head softball job. Then a Panthers sophomore baseball coach, Sanew expected the interview to take an hour. He felt dejected it ended in a quarter of that time. “I left there thinking, 15 minutes, I really messed this one up,” Sanew recalled.

  • Friedrich’s 27-year run at Stevenson is over Jun 11, 2014 10:21 PM
Today is Larry Friedrichs’ last official day of teaching at Stevenson. That was expected for the high school’s retiring assistant director of special education. Two weeks ago marked Friedrichs’ last day of coaching Stevenson’s softball team. That was not expected. “My position was posted (Tuesday),” Friedrichs said. Which means after 27 seasons and 515 wins as head coach, Friedrichs is out.

  • Wagner, Warren find a way Jun 9, 2014 11:43 PM
Jana Wagner has been a four-year varsity pitcher for the Warren softball team. On Monday night at Barrington’s Fields of Dreams, the senior right-hander saved her best for last, pitching her team to the state finals for the first time since 1980. Wagner, whose team lost in the same game against the same team on the same field a year ago, tossed a 5-hitter to lead the Blue Devils to a 3-1 triumph over Barrington in the Fillies own supersectional.

  • Future’s bright, but Wauconda’s playoff exit stings Jun 9, 2014 10:22 PM
Wauconda's Kayla Wedl lost a pitchers’ duel to another young talent, as freshman right-hander Lexy Staples fired a 3-hitter, striking out a pair and walking three, as Sterling held off the Bulldogs 3-1 in a Class 3A supersectional for the second year in a row. Wauconda, which last year won its first sectional championship in school history, finished 29-9, while Sterling (30-8) earned a berth downstate.

  • MacDonald drives Barrington through to supersectional Jun 7, 2014 10:51 PM
Rachel MacDonald is living the dream. Just a couple short weeks ago, MacDonald was playing on Barrington’s JV team. Now she’s the Fillies’ latest hero, and not just once but twice in the same week. MacDonald, who had the game-winning hit in Barrington’s sectional semifinal win on Wednesday, did it again Saturday. The sophomore designated player hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, then drove in 2 more runs with a double in the sixth as the Fillies beat DeKalb 6-4 to win the Class 4A Jacobs sectional championship in Algonquin.

  • Warren’s hit parade continues against Lake Zurich Jun 7, 2014 5:33 PM
There was enough action packed into the Class 4A Stevenson softball sectional championship to fill up two games Saturday in Lincolnshire. No. 3-seeded Warren jumped out to a commanding 11-0 lead over No. 2 Lake Zurich after 3½ innings only to see the Bears battle back to cut the lead to 11-8 after five innings in this wild title game between two North Suburban Lake Division rivals. But when all was said and done, the Blue Devils (24-9) were able to hold on for a 12-9 victory over Lake Zurich (27-5) to advance to their second supersectional championship game in a row Monday at 7 p.m. in Barrington.

  • Akron tops Bandits 8-4 Jun 7, 2014 11:28 PM
After an offensive explosion, the Akron Racers snapped their four-game losing streak against the Bandits with an 8-4 victory Saturday night in Rosemont. The scoring started early for both teams as Akron’s Taylor Schlopy got the first hit of the night, a home run to deep left field. In the bottom half of the first the Bandits answered with an RBI single by Tammy Williams to score Emily Allard.

  • Caliva, Glenbard North oust Conant Jun 7, 2014 10:05 PM
Glenbard North’s Alex Caliva broke her bat at practice on Friday. But for the first time in three years, the senior second baseman did not have a broken heart after playing in a Class 4A sectional championship game. Caliva and the top-seeded Panthers turned the tables from the past two years when they lost 1-run games. This time, it was Caliva’s game-winning double to left that scored Stephanie Campos with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 victory over No. 2 Conant (26-6) at Bartlett High School.

  • Heck, yes: Wauconda’s still playing Jun 7, 2014 6:38 PM
Call that a heck of a finish for Jena Heck. Not that the Wauconda senior’s softball season is over. Not after her two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the top-seeded Bulldogs to a 1-0 win over No. 2 Grayslake Central in Saturday’s Class 3A sectional final at Ridgewood.

  • Naperville Central victory means a little extra Jun 7, 2014 5:36 PM
Yes, a victory over Downers Grove South in Saturday’s Class 4A Oswego East sectional final would put Naperville Central one game closer to the state finals. And the Redhawks certainly wanted that.
