  • Gold-medal efforts at Barrington Feb 14, 2015 9:00 PM
The wide array of sports being contested at Barrington High School on Saturday almost gave the campus the feel you’d find at a Olympic-style winter sports festival. Wrestling over here, basketball over there — and down this hallway, the Mid-Suburban League boys swimming and diving championships. And in the pool, the host Broncos ended up celebrating a successful defense of their MSL team title, emerging on top in a finish that was much more tightly grouped than usual. Barrington won with 233 points, followed closely by Fremd (218). Rolling Meadows (183) turned in its highest-ever finish in third place, with Palatine (169) taking a big jump up as well to fourth.

The Palatine forward drew a shooting foul driving to the basket, hit 2 free throws to break a 48-48 tie with visiting Schaumburg and, after two timeouts, zipped cross court to intercept a three-quarters-court-length pass to seal the 50-48 victory for the Pirates in front of a packed house on a boys basketball senior night.

The Vikings also clinched their sixth straight Mid-Suburban League title under coach Dave Yates. They will play for the MSL crown a week from Wednesday at either Prospect or Hersey. Prospect’s Olivia Gonzalez entered the Mid-Suburban League girls gymnastic meet as a wild card. The Knights senior left as an ace. Gonzalez, who has been dealing with a back injury for most of the season, certainly wasn’t affected by it on Friday night in rolling to the all-around title in tough field with a 37.60. “She dominated,” said Prospect coach Randy Smith of Gonzalez all-around effort. “She’s been dealing with back issues and it just shows what type of competitor she is.” Fremd may have not dominated, but the Vikings definitely did enough to get the job done, rolling to its 22nd MSL title with 146.15 points at Hersey’s Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.
