  • Resilient McDonald bounces back for Barrington Sep 3, 2014 10:25 PM
Bailee McDonald is one of the top rebounders for coach Babbi Barreiro’s Barrington girls basketball team. The Fillies senior knows how to rebound in other ways, too. McDonald, who came back from foot surgery earlier this summer, was not exactly thrilled with her score of 50 in a Mid-Suburban League tri-meet last week against Prospect and Palatine at Makray Memorial. How did she rebound? How about a career-best and medalist round of 39 at Rob Roy Golf Course in Prospect Heights on Wednesday afternoon?

Due to the humidity outside, the Fremd gymnasium was awfully hot. So was the action on the volleyball floor. In a decisive third game that was tied at every point to 10, and a total of 13 times, the final point came when junior Liz Fuerst leapt high near the outside pole and put down a kill to clinch a 26-24, 20-25, 25-23 victory for the Huskies.

Expect the best Mid-Suburban West football teams to lay it on the line this fall. The offensive lines will be the key to success for most teams in the MSL West this season. • New, younger era begins for Schaumburg Aug 21, 2014 10:00 PM
How does a team replace nearly 2,000 yards and 31 touchdowns? That is the question facing Schaumburg and coach Mark Stilling as the Saxons head into this season without last year’s all-area team football captain and athlete of the year, quarterback Stacey Smith. “The obvious answer is you don’t replace a guy like him,” Stilling said. “Stacey is one of a kind. We have to be different, and and be better in other areas.”

  • Des Plaines alderman dies of stroke at 29 Aug 26, 2014 2:06 PM
Colleagues are remembering Des Plaines Alderman Joanna Sojka as a rising, young leader committed to problem solving and helping others. The 29-year-old freshman alderman, elected in April 2013 for the city's 7th Ward, died late Monday from an apparent stroke. “She was a beautiful, young, single woman. She could have chosen to live anywhere in the world, but she chose Des Plaines,” Alderman Denise Rodd said.

The Bison captured Monday’s annual Early Bird Invite hosted by Conant at the Fox Run Golf Course in Elk Grove by 6 strokes over Class AA defending state champ Prospect 339-345. “We have a lot of new faces in the program,” said Myers, whose team graduated four of its top six players. “But a lot of the new ones stepped up.”

Nicole Pauly, one of the top players in Palatine High School softball history, is the new head coach of the Pirates program, school officials announced Monday. A former professional softball player, Pauly served as an assistant at PHS this spring under head coach Jeff Manz. She also completed her first year at Palatine as a counselor. “Nicole is a standout athlete, and has been a great addition to our student services team,” said Palatine High School Principal Gary Steiger. “Athletically, she has left her mark on every program she’s been associated with, from her playing days at PHS, Northwestern, and professionally to her previous coaching experience. We’re very excited about the direction our softball program is headed and the mark Nicole will leave here.” Pauly has a master’s degree in school counseling from Loyola University Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern. As a four-year starter at Northwestern, Pauly had 53 home runs, 168 RBI, 149 runs scored and a .604 slugging percentage in 215 collegiate games. A Palatine native, Pauly was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and softball at Palatine High School.
