  • OT win puts WW South in regional final May 21, 2014 11:07 PM
In the Wheaton Warrenville South girls soccer offense, junior midfielder Alexis Jakuszewski’s job is to create opportunities. Jakuszewski thought she did just that with 14:18 left in regulation during Wednesday’s Class 3A West Chicago regional semifinal against Schaumburg. Her free kick bounced free in the goal box, and Marina Tolczyk converted for a goal. After a brief conference between the referee and assistant referee, the goal was disallowed because of offsides. The game remained scoreless and headed to overtime.

  • Felde, Schaumburg step up for share of second in West May 20, 2014 10:09 PM
After dropping a 1-0 decision on the final play of the game at Barrington earlier this spring, Schaumburg’s softball players were out to score some runs this time. And they sure got them at an opportune time. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the host team pushed across 3 runs and pitcher Shannon Felde retired three of four batters in the seventh to give the Saxons a 5-2 victory and share of second place in the Mid-Suburban West with Barrington (22-10, 12-4).

  • Wachal, Conant power to another West title May 19, 2014 10:28 PM
Things got tense in Monday’s Mid-Suburban West softball showdown when Schaumburg rallied for 2 runs to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. The Cougars had not scored since the first inning when Alissa Wachal stepped into the batter’s box to lead of the bottom half of the fourth. “I felt like I needed to do something,” she said. “We needed to get going again because we were kind of down at that point.” So how did Wachal remedy the situation? The junior right fielder belted her sixth home run of the season over the left-center field fence and it proved to be the game-winning RBI in the Cougars’ 4-2 triumph.

  • Schaumburg’s in, and Elk Grove’s hopeful May 19, 2014 9:37 PM
Scoreboard watching was in full swing in Arlington Heights, Elk Grove and Mt. Prospect on Monday. But it was the 2014 version — with emails, texts, Twitter feeds and website-following. When the screens cleared, Schaumburg had lost its game to Elk Grove 6-2 — but the Saxons still won the right to represent the Mid-Suburban League’s West Division in the league championship game, as Hersey beat Barrington 2-1 about 45 minutes later. With Elk Grove’s victory, the Grenadiers (19-9, 10-5) won the opportunity to determine their own destiny in the East Division. Elk Grove plays at Palatine on Tuesday with the opportunity to clinch outright. The Grens lead both Hersey (15-13-1, 10-6) and Prospect (17-11-1, 10-6), which beat Conant 3-2, by a half-game.

  • Barrington nips Fremd for MSL title May 17, 2014 12:12 AM
Heading into the final race of the night, senior John Andraschko knew he had just one job to do. And it was a big one: Anchor the Broncos’ 1,600-meter relay relay to a win. That was the position the Broncos were in as two-time defending Mid Suburban League boys track champion Fremd held a 114-109.5 lead before the final race started. “We just had to focus on what we could control,” Andraschko said. “Our focus was on ourselves and about going out to try and win the race.” Andraschko anchored the group that included Brendan Melynchuk, Curtis Monahan, and Adam Phillips to a win in 3:28.07. The Broncos then got help from second-place Hersey (3:28.84) and third-place Palatine (3:29.56), all of which added up to a Barrington victory in the MSL meet. By one-half point. Barrington won its first conference title since 2007 with 119.5 points. The two-time defending champion Vikings were second with 119 points followed by Schaumburg (96.5), Palatine (73) and Hersey (71).

As soon as Drewann Pancratz accepted the position as Conant’s head girls volleyball coach, three former Mid-Suburban League basketball standouts got busy with travel plans. “My three older brothers (Mark, Zach and Jake who all played for Schaumburg) booked their flights back home so they wouldn’t miss the Schaumburg vs. Conant match,” Drewann said. Her mother Jeanette, who directs the Schaumburg girls volleyball program, is one of winningest coaches in the state with nearly 800 victories.

  • Valacak’s return a big win for Fremd May 12, 2014 10:29 PM
When the softball game between Fremd and Schaumburg was suspended due to lightning on Monday, the Saxons were holding a 4-3 lead with the Vikings batting in the bottom of the seventh inning. The hosts had their catcher, Holly Straup, standing on second base after a leadoff double and there was one out when the home plate umpire halted the Mid-Suburban West softball contest. But no matter what the score ends up, the Vikings are not going to come out losers in this game. The best news of the day for them was seeing former assistant coach TJ Valacak in the dugout. It was his first time back on the diamond since he began battling Leukemia last fall.
