    According to both Prospect senior diver Dana Liva and her coach, Antonino Bondi, Liva’s performance in Friday’s Mid-Suburban League championship meet was far from perfect. The judges, at the very least, sure liked it a lot. Liva completed a four-year run of MSL championships with a meet and pool record score of 492.45 at Barrington High School.

On Thursday night in Skokie, the Saxons’ 2014 resume picked up another championship.Morgan Sterrett put down 6 kills while Mallory Gerber added 3 as No. 2-seeded Schaumburg posted a 25-17, 25-20 victory over No. 7 Niles West to win the Niles West Class 4A regional crown.

Hundley rushed for 301 yards in helping the Blazers beat Willowbrook to clinch an outright conference championship in the West Suburban Gold, while Maxwell had 3 interceptions (along with 3 receiving touchdowns) to help the Eagles top Leo and gain a playoff berth.

    Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball champion Hersey kicked off postseason play with a 25-16, 25-13 victory over No. 15 Glenbrook North in semifinals of the Class 4A Stevenson regional on Tuesday nigh, while MSL West champ Schaumburg advanced with a three-set victory over Resurrection at Niles West.

    Palatine new it would be facing Schaumburg’s best shot as the Pirates pursued an outright Mid-Suburban West football championship. And sure enough, the Saxons, last year’ West winner, made the Pirates earn their title for 48 minutes in a rousing 45-35 contest in Palatine on Friday night. “It’s been a great year for these players and for the program, winning the conference title,” said Palatine coach Rick Splitt. “The seniors set the goal for themselves, and after a tough start to the season they responded.”

    With the Hersey girls volleyball team 1 point away from a Mid-Suburban League championship, the Huskies’ Gabri Olhava gave her longtime friend Courtney Stedman the look. Seconds later, the big crowd at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights was looking at the 2014 MSL champs. Stedman quick set Olhava, who put down the kill that gave Hersey a 10th conference title with a 25-20, 25-16 victory over Mid-Suburban West champion Schaumburg.

    As many as 376 hopefuls from all around Illinois have gathered for the most important weekend of high school girls tennis, as tournament host Buffalo Grove and the 11other Mid-Suburban League schools welcome the field to the area. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Thursday and runs through Saturday. The semifinals are schedule to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Buffalo Grove, with the championship matches to follow.

    Andrew Ralston and Alexis Flores both scored first-half goals as No. 10 seed Schaumburg asserted itself against a youthful side from Glenbard North. It was too much for the seventh-seeded Panthers, who fell 2-1 late Tuesday after a fierce comeback effort against the host Saxons at Gary Scholz Stadium. The Saxons (8-4-2) next face Lake Park (17-1-4) in a Class 3A regional final at 5 p.m. Friday.

    When Oyinkan Akinola made the trip to Connecticut to visit Fairfield University this past July, she was quite a distance from her home in the northwest suburbs. “But when I was there, it felt like home,” said the Schaumburg senior who is the leading attacker for the Saxons with her explosive arm swing. Fairfield will eventually become her home after she graduates from Schaumburg next May. The 5-foot-10 senior committed this summer to the Stags’ Division I volleyball program and coach Todd Kress, who has an overall record of 328-239 and was the second youngest coach in NCAA history with 200 career wins. Kress previously was the head coach at Buffalo and Florida State.

    If Hersey’s girls volleyball team was looking for momentum heading into Thursday’s Mid-Suburban League championship match, the Huskies found it Saturday in Des Plaines. For the first time in years, they advanced to the title match of the 16-team Maine West Pumpkin Invite. Sandburg won the championship 25-18, 28-26 after Hersey defeated Lyons 25-23, 25-23 in the semifinals. The Huskies also netted a 25-18, 25-23 triumph over Riverside-Brookfield in the quarterfinals and defeated Lockport (25-22 20-25 25-21) and Conant (25-16, 25-8) in Friday’s pool play.

    All eyes were fixed on Conant senior Zach Dale on Saturday at the Mid-Suburban League boys cross country meet, and the Cougar senior didn’t disappoint. Dale, who has a run conservative race schedule this season, showed no rust in running away with the victory in 14:58, earning himself a second consecutive MSL title at Busse Woods. “Maybe it wasn’t flashy,” said Conant coach John Powers of Dale’s victory. “But this was a matter of taking care of business, and he passed the eye test big-time.” Hersey also took care of business. The Huskies placed four runners in the top 12 in securing their second consecutive MSL title with 57 points, holding off a strong challenge from Buffalo Grove (63 points).

    Palatine junior Kelly O’Brien made it look easy early, but she had to work hard late. On a cool and damp morning, O’Brien jumped out to a comfortable lead in the first mile in the Mid-Suburban League girls cross country conference meet on Saturday at Busse Woods. But Fremd senior Ayako Higuchi made her work in the final 2 miles. The two ran neck-and-neck in the final mile before O’Brien made a final surge with 20 meters remaining to secure the MSL title in 17:52 leading Palatine to its third consecutive MSL triumph with 40 points.

    The situation was pretty cut and dried for the Hoffman Estates football team on Friday night. Win its final two regular-season games, and it would likely gain a berth in the Illinois High School Association state playoffs. Thanks to senior quarterback Jeff Mayes, it’s one down, one to go for the Hawks. Mayes led Hoffman Estates to a 28-14 victory over Schaumburg on Friday, throwing 3 touchdown passes and scampering 30 yards for another to improve his team’s record to 4-4 and 1-3 in the Mid-Suburban West.

  • Schaumburg completes run to MSL West title Oct 16, 2014 10:47 PM
    It was a special night for Schaumburg, which clinched the MSL West girls volleyball crown with a 25-20, 25-21 victory on parents night Thursday. Several alumni from the Schaumburg volleyball program were also part of the big crowd that watched the Saxons advance to the MSL title match for the first time since 2010. The Saxons (19-9, 9-1) finished one match ahead of Fremd (17-6, 8-2) in the MSL West.
