    When Matt Walsh took over the Schaumburg boys basketball program five years ago, there were concerns that the program might not reach the heights it had reached in previous years. Walsh made sure the tradition continued, winning three Mid-Suburban League West titles, two outright MSL titles along with three regional championships. He also built a family atmosphere for the Saxons. But the needs of his family at home became greater and with that, Walsh resigned as head basketball coach at Schaumburg on Thursday. He will remain as a teacher in the school.

    Schaumburg coach Greg Charvat concedes that his team is young and still getting to know one another. With six sophomores and two freshmen on the varsity roster, Charvat stressed to his team the importance of improvement and building on each contest. After a 2-1 loss to Bartlett in the season opener Monday night, the Saxons rebounded with a 1-0 victory at West Chicago on Wednesday, beating the team that knocked them out of the regional last season.

    Schaumburg High School was buzzing with school spirit as many of its own shaved their heads during a pep assembly to raise awareness and funds for children’s cancer research. The school hosted its third St. Baldrick’s shaving event on March 14 and has raised $102,390.84 to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
