School conference hotels, food, travel cost taxpayers $277,086Feb 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Come for the conference, stay for the hotel room, $57 steak dinner, valet parking and laundry service. Those are just some of the extra costs taxpayers in 89 suburban school districts covered for board members and administrators who attended a November conference in Chicago. The districts racked up $277,086.17 in hotel, food, travel and incidental costs over the weekend-long conference.

The Partnership for Inspired Education (PIE) annual event joins four school district serving nine communities to raise funds for education. More than 400 people attended the group's recent fundraiser in Oakbrook Terrace, which raised close to $13,000. “It was wonderful to see a room filled with people, all of whom were there in support of education,” said Michele Cummins, principal for District 45's Ardmore School.

A DuPage County judge has reversed a decision by the regional school board that would have allowed an Oak Brook neighborhood to switch school districts, officials said Monday. The ruling by Judge Bonnie Wheaton came as welcome news to Salt Creek Elementary District 48 and DuPage High School District 88, who stood to lose about 15 students and a combined $1 million a year in tax revenue.

Those were among the traits recalled during Sunday's special memorial service for four people killed Jan. 17 in a murder-arson near Villa Park. Several hundred family members and friends attended the service at Willowbrook High School to honor Ursula Nailor; her sons, Darnell Holt Jr. and Daniel Nailor; and her niece, Domonique Robinson.

The deaths of Darnell Holt and Daniel Nailor were a shock to everyone at their Villa Park schools, Willowbrook High and Albright Middle. For many students, it may also be their first time experiencing a great loss. Rosemarie Cohen, bereavement coordinator for Adventist St. Thomas Hospice in Hinsdale, said there are important guidelines to remember when helping teens and adolescents navigate through grief. "Teens will most likely find the support from their peer group," she said. "But that doesn't mean the parents are not part of the equation."
