DuPage towns still counting benefits from Ryder Cup Jan 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Several DuPage County communities are still calculating the benefits from the Ryder Cup — both in terms of money and image — even though golf's most prestigious tournament left Medinah Country Club nearly four months ago. The event also continues to pay dividends for charities such as Ronald McDonald House of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana that are poised to receive thousands of dollars more this week from a tournament-related online auction.

Lombard plans to sell ‘Rory McIlroy car’ on eBay Dec 13, 2012 12:00 AM
The unmarked Lombard police car used to rush European golfer Rory McIlroy to his game-changing performance on the final day of the Ryder Cup in Medinah is heading to the auction block. "Since it's drawing so much attention," Village Manager David Hulseberg said in October, "we figure we have nothing to lose by putting it out there for any European or anyone who would like to buy the car and do whatever they would like with it."

Tom Watson returns as 2014 Ryder Cup captain Dec 13, 2012 12:00 AM
The Americans are bringing back Tom Watson as their Ryder Cup captain with hopes of ending two decades of losing in Europe. Watson, however, faces a tall order as the Americans have lost seven of the last nine Ryder Cups and have not won away from home since 1993, when Watson was the captain at The Belfry in England. The eight-time major champion will be 65 when the 2014 Ryder Cup is played at Gleneagles in Scotland, making him the oldest captain in Ryder Cup history. "I was waiting for about 20 years to get the call," Watson said with that familiar gap-tooth grin. "I loved it the first time. I'm a great fan of the Ryder Cup. It's a great honor to be able to do it again."

McIlroy’s Ryder Cup ride needs trustees’ OK before auction Nov 1, 2012 12:00 AM
The village of Lombard would like to auction off the squad car Deputy Chief Pat Rollins used to bring European golfer Rory McIlroy to the final day of the Ryder Cup in late September, but trustees first have to decide how Rollins should be able to use its replacement. Trustee Bill Ware raised concerns last month about the high mileage on the unmarked 2005 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Rollins, questioning how often the vehicle is used for personal trips.

Europe’s Paul Lawrie criticizes crowd behavior at Medinah Oct 3, 2012 12:00 AM
Paul Lawrie wasn't just battling Brandt Snedeker as Europe won the Ryder Cup. He also had to contend with the Medinah crowd. "I didn't get abused, but you get comments like: `Top it! Shank it! You're going to lose.' Stuff like that on every shot you play," Lawrie said Wednesday. "Every single shot you hit last week, that's what you get. So apparently that's how it is."

Day 3 gets off to unusual start as European star nearly late for tee time Sep 30, 2012 12:00 AM
The third and final day of the 39th Ryder Cup got off to a bizarre start at Medinah this morning when Europe’s top player, Rory McIlroy, nearly missed his tee time. Early reports indicated McIlroy, who arrived at the course with only about 10 minutes to spare thanks to a police escort, was confused over the time zone, believing he was to tee off at 12:25 p.m., instead of 11:25 a.m.

And long-term benefits could be in store as local officials woo visiting executives from around the world. “The Ryder Cup puts DuPage County on the world stage,” said Greg Bedalov, CEO of Choose DuPage.

For Europe’s best, this was the miracle at Medinah Sep 30, 2012 12:00 AM
It could be argued that this was the greatest comeback in sports history, considering the pressure, the circumstances, the location, the way the U.S. team had performed for two days and the sheer number of points Europe had to get in a single day of play at the Ryder Cup.

Furyk, Mickelson had their chances to win Sep 30, 2012 12:00 AM
One up. Two holes to play. That was the situation both Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk found themselves in Sunday afternoon at the Ryder Cup. Hang onto those leads and the U.S. would almost certainly claim victory at Medinah Country Club. Somehow, though, both matches unraveled before millions of unbelieving eyes.

Was this the last Ryder for winless Stricker? Sep 30, 2012 12:00 AM
Did Steve Stricker, who’s had more birthdays than golf has had Ryder Cups, just play in his last Team USA vs. Team Europe competition? If so, will his lasting Ryder Cup memory be his last putt? The clutch eight-footer gave the United States hope, only to see opponent Martin Kaymer match the par-saver with a five-footer to halve the 18th hole, win the head-to-head match and secure victory for Europe. Stricker took the collar in the 39th Ryder Cup at sunny, jam-packed Medinah Country Club, going 0-4, as Europe rallied from Sunday’s four-point deficit for a stunning 14½-13½ victory.
