Some coaches aren't happy about the decision, saying that removing pads from football will cause injuries, not prevent them.

    When he recorded his 400th win in April of 2008, Stevenson softball coach Larry Friedrichs received an engraved bat from his players. He got another gift from appreciative players Tuesday. As the Patriots gathered in the outfield following their 6-5 win over visiting Mundelein in a North Suburban Lake Division battle, senior first baseman Abby O’Connor presented her coach a plaque. The victory marked No. 500 for Friedrichs.

    As three of only six seniors on Warren’s 22-player roster, veterans Ben Dinter, Dom Cuevas and Wes Gordon stick close together. “The three of them have become this vocal group of leaders for our team,” Warren coach Clint Smothers said. “They are doing a great job of showing our younger guys how to play.” Next year, they’ll be the young guys. But at least they’ll still be together. Dinter, Cuevas and Gordon will continue their strong connection in college. All three of them signed this week to play baseball next season at College of Lake County.

    Griffin Claes led off Barrington's 400 and 800 relay teams to season-best performances, and Barrington won 10 of the 17 events to win its fifth Patriot Relays title in the last six years on Thursday at Stevenson. The Broncos finished with 142 points to 113 for second-place Huntley. The host Patriots (92), Grant (80) and Cary-Grove (62) rounded out the top five teams.

    Girls soccer Wauconda 2, Round Lake 0: Lauren Mantis and Diane Guzik scored in the second half, as the visiting Bulldogs pulled out their North Suburban Prairie opener for their first win of the season. Keeper Ally Magiera notched the shutout and earned the assist on Guzik’s goal, as well. Wauconda improved to 1-4-1. Antioch 1, Vernon Hills 1: Mikayla Abbeduto scored unassisted for Antioch (5-2-1, 2-0-1), which remained undefeated in North Suburban Prairie play. Katherine Koczwara scored for Vernon Hills (3-2-2), with Amy Andrea earning the assist.

    Vernon Hills’ excessively syllabled sophomore “Viviancalana” Overbeck won two long races, appropriately enough, and then there was Grant’s team, which captured its own invitatonal. If the Bulldogs had accomplished the feat in previous years, no one seemed to know Saturday. Suffice it to say, it had been a long, long, long, long time ago. Grant finished with a lot of points (135), 10 more than runner-up Lakes and many more than third-place Grayslake Central (87) in the 10-team field. In Jackie Randall’s seven years with the program (the last six as head coach), the Bulldogs had never won their own invite.

    Girls soccer Round Lake 3, Woodstock 2: Karen Uribe assisted on 2 goals as Round Lake got the win. Evelyn Torres and Michelle Hernandez each scored off of Uribe assists while Jasmine Cruz scored an unassisted goal. Goalie Jordan Devera had 3 saves for the Panthers. Carmel 0, Benet 0 (2OT): Carmel and Benet couldn’t decide anything, even with two extra sessions. Glenbrook South 4, Stevenson 0: Glenbrook South scored 3 of its goals after halftime. Highland Park 5, Grayslake North 1: Senior Chelsea Olson scored Grayslake North’s only goal. Meanwhile, Grayslake North goalies Abby Rice and Megan Davis had 4 and 3 saves respectively.

    Girls soccer Prairie Ridge 2, Wauconda 0: Ally Magiera made 7 saves in net for the Bulldogs (0-4-1). Grant 3, Round Lake 0: On Thursday night,Leah Nehila and Jenna Pecorini each had a goal and an assist for the visiting Bulldogs in the North Suburban Prairie Division match. Alyssa Wilhelm also scored for Grant (3-4), while Ana Rodas made 2 saves in net to record the shutout.

    The softball was flying out at Mundelein Tuesday. Both the host Mustangs and Warren hit 4 home runs, and in the end it was the visiting Blue Devils who won the North Suburban Lake Division opener 13-9 in eight innings.
