Grayslake Central's baseball team traveled to the South Side of Chicago on Wednesday and, behind the pitching of sophomore Justin Guryn, defeated University High 3-1 on White Sox Field. The full artificial field was built last year through the Chicago White Sox charities organization and is used by many Chicago Public Schools members.

    Stevenson's softball field had yielded just two over-the-fence home runs before this season. On Tuesday, Carmel Catholic's Jenny Behan become the third player to pull off the feat this season. "That's 3 in like in 2˝ weeks," said Stevenson coach Larry Friedrichs, whose own Abby O'Connor on Saturday became the first player ever to hit two over-the-fence homers (both this year) at the Patriots' field. Behan's shot, which cleared the 255-feet sign in center field, helped lift Carmel to a 14-10 win in a nonconference slugfest that featured 26 hits.

    Allie O’Connell’s round-offs and back flips were impressive enough. But when the freshman cheerleader hurdled the fence by Grayslake North’s stadium following the football team’s scrimmage late last summer, it was Knights girls track coach Brian Hamlett who wanted to do cartwheels, He had to have her on his roster. Turns out, O’Connell had been running track — for all of one year. “She’s an impressive athlete,” said Hamlett, an assistant football coach. O’Connell demonstrated her athleticism again Thursday night at Grayslake North, becoming the first Lake County champion in the history of Grayslake North’s girls program. She won the 100-meter hurdles in a season-best 15.66, nearly a full second ahead of runner-up Emily Troemel of Grant. Troemel, mind you, competed the 300 hurdles at state last year.

    Round Lake's softball team got a pair of home runs, but Wauconda notched a wild victory Wednesday. Wauconda scored 10 times in the top of the fifth inning and outslugged the host Panthers 18-8 in North Suburban Prairie Division action.

    Mundelein’s baseball team scored the only run it needed for ace Mitch Schulewitz in the fourth thanks to an error and then added 3 in the fifth, as the Mustangs shut out visiting Warren 4-0 Tuesday.

    The cold and rain didn’t slow down Highland Park’s girls track team Thursday night. Kiera Thorpe won the 400-meter dash (59.62) and 200 dash (26.82), and Savannah Sledd threw winning marks in the shot put (35-0) and discus (86-7), as the Giants captured the Grayslake Central Ram invitational with 134 points. Mundelein, which received four individual wins, was second with 112 points, edging Grayslake Central (107.333). Grayslake North (85.333) was fourth, followed by Carmel Catholic (65) and Round Lake (23.333).
