    Chase Slota dominated Grant en route to a 6-0 victory for Lakes’ baseball team Wednesday. Slota allowed just 1 hit, a bloop single to shallow right, and struck out six hitters, as the Eagles improved to 12-8 and 6-2 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.

    On a cool, overcast, wet evening at Grayslake Central, which hosted the Lake County invite, Warren's Brittny Ellis, as always, weathered the competition. She anchored Warren’s winning 400 relay and then sped to wins in the 100 (12.22), 400 (58.25) and 200 (25.33) dashes.

    In an effort to make high school football safer, the IHSA announced Tuesday that full pads (and hence full contact drills and scrimmages) would be prohibited during summer workouts. Some coaches aren't happy about the decision, saying that removing pads from football will cause injuries, not prevent them.

    Adam Turner was simply perfect. Mundelein’s senior right-hander retired all 15 batters he faced in throwing a five-inning no-hitter, as the Mustangs beat visiting Lake Forest 12-0 in a North Suburban Lake Division game Tuesday.

    When he recorded his 400th win in April of 2008, Stevenson softball coach Larry Friedrichs received an engraved bat from his players. He got another gift from appreciative players Tuesday. As the Patriots gathered in the outfield following their 6-5 win over visiting Mundelein in a North Suburban Lake Division battle, senior first baseman Abby O’Connor presented her coach a plaque. The victory marked No. 500 for Friedrichs.

  • Shared baseball future for Warren trio Apr 18, 2014 5:35 PM
    As three of only six seniors on Warren’s 22-player roster, veterans Ben Dinter, Dom Cuevas and Wes Gordon stick close together. “The three of them have become this vocal group of leaders for our team,” Warren coach Clint Smothers said. “They are doing a great job of showing our younger guys how to play.” Next year, they’ll be the young guys. But at least they’ll still be together. Dinter, Cuevas and Gordon will continue their strong connection in college. All three of them signed this week to play baseball next season at College of Lake County.

  • Claes, Barrington sprint to Patriot Relays victory Apr 17, 2014 10:25 PM
    Griffin Claes led off Barrington's 400 and 800 relay teams to season-best performances, and Barrington won 10 of the 17 events to win its fifth Patriot Relays title in the last six years on Thursday at Stevenson. The Broncos finished with 142 points to 113 for second-place Huntley. The host Patriots (92), Grant (80) and Cary-Grove (62) rounded out the top five teams.

    Jenny Behan blasted her seventh home run of the season, doubled and drove in 4 runs, as Carmel Catholic’s softball team pounded host Marian Central 15-2 in a five-inning nonconference game Thursday.
