  • Stevenson gets a humbling national-level reminder Jan 22, 2015 9:47 PM
Top-ranked Stevenson is still unbeaten. In Illinois, that is. The only two losses for the state’s best team have come at the hands of top-notch, out-of-state competition, teams that are ranked nationally. Just like the Patriots (16-2). Stevenson’s most-recent loss, and its most lopsided loss of the Jalen Brunson era, was last weekend in the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. The Patriots lost to Findlay College Prep out of Nevada, 84-58. Findlay College Prep is the No. 1-ranked team in the USA Today Top 25 national high school poll.

  • Signature win for Stevenson at Round Lake Jan 20, 2015 11:10 PM
Round Lake guard Michael Green did not get Jalen Brunson’s autograph, as his dad, Tony, joked he should do when Stevenson’s star ran by him on the court. Green got something else, however. On the opening possession of Tuesday night’s North Suburban Conference crossover, the 6-foot-2 Brunson penetrated the lane. Green, who’s 6-3, blocked the shot, triggering a Panthers fastbreak. “I wasn’t expecting it,” Green said. Stevenson was expected to win the game, and the state’s No. 1 team did so easily. Brunson rebounded from Green swatting his first shot of the night, Ryuji Aoki came off the bench to score a career- and game-high 19 points, and the visiting Patriots cruised to an 83-42 win.

  • Wauconda salutes Weber with a ‘W’ Jan 17, 2015 11:31 PM
What promised to be an emotional night at Wauconda got ratcheted up even more during pregame warm-ups. Executing the perfect kind of teamwork that would make Tom Weber flash his infectious smile, Wauconda’s girls basketball players stood at center court and took off their warm-up tops, unveiling special T-shirts they had made up for their North Suburban Prairie Division game against Round Lake. The front of the shirts featured a picture of Weber holding his little pride and joy, granddaughter Shelby, who’s 2. Shelby’s mom is Wauconda head coach Jaime Dennis. “We wanted to surprise her,” Bulldogs senior forward Jessie Wood said of her coach. “She started crying.” Jaime Dennis is the daughter of Tom, who passed away suddenly last spring. Tom Weber was one of Wauconda’s finest citizens, highly involved in District 118 and more highly involved in his family. He was a regular at Wauconda games, especially when his daughter’s team was playing.

  • Grayslake North takes aim against Washington foes Jan 15, 2015 10:47 PM
Although there’s no scientific data as proof, there does seem to be anecdotal evidence that high school basketball in each area of Illinois is styled a bit differently. Just ask the Grayslake North boys basketball team. The Knights are preparing to return to downstate Washington High School this weekend as part of the annual Martin Luther King tournament there that they participated in last year. They are ready for what they weren’t quite ready for last time. “We couldn’t believe the shooting we saw there,” Grayslake North coach Todd Grunloh said. “It’s not like it is up here. Literally any kid who checks into the game down there can shoot from two to three feet outside the 3-point line and with great form."
