    Grant’s repeat plan succeeds May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
It started in the field and ended up on the track, and that's the formula that led to another conference championship for Grant. It was that formula that the Bulldogs and their coaches met about back in November, and every week since — not losing focus on the ultimate goal, another North Suburban Conference title. Thursday night, on a cool and very soggy night at Libertyville, the Bulldogs, who shared the conference title with Lake Zurich a year ago, showed their dominance in all facets to win their second consecutive NSC crown. Grant, which also captured the NSC Prairie Division title, amassed 115 points to 96 for runner-up Lakes.

"That's 3 in like in 2½ weeks," said Stevenson coach Larry Friedrichs, whose own Abby O'Connor on Saturday became the first player ever to hit two over-the-fence homers (both this year) at the Patriots' field. Behan's shot, which cleared the 255-feet sign in center field, helped lift Carmel to a 14-10 win in a nonconference slugfest that featured 26 hits.

Allie O’Connell’s round-offs and back flips were impressive enough. But when the freshman cheerleader hurdled the fence by Grayslake North’s stadium following the football team’s scrimmage late last summer, it was Knights girls track coach Brian Hamlett who wanted to do cartwheels, He had to have her on his roster. Turns out, O’Connell had been running track — for all of one year. “She’s an impressive athlete,” said Hamlett, an assistant football coach. O’Connell demonstrated her athleticism again Thursday night at Grayslake North, becoming the first Lake County champion in the history of Grayslake North’s girls program. She won the 100-meter hurdles in a season-best 15.66, nearly a full second ahead of runner-up Emily Troemel of Grant. Troemel, mind you, competed the 300 hurdles at state last year.
