  • Waukegan edges Round Lake for North Shore triumph Aug 30, 2014 7:46 PM
A quick start worked in favor of Round Lake’s boys soccer team in the championship game of the North Shore Tournament on Saturday. The latter part of the game was much less favorable for the Panthers. They lost standout forward Freddie Ramirez to an injury in the second half and were forced to play the last 18 minutes one player short. It was too much to overcome, as Round Lake fell 3-2 to Waukegan after giving up 3 second-half goals at Lake Forest.

  • It’s worth the wait for Round Lake Aug 30, 2014 8:58 PM
Nearly 23 hours after Opening Night was kicked off, all four quarters at Round Lake’s football stadium were finally in the books. But the host Panthers and DePaul Prep, back again after lightning forced their game on Friday to be suspended until Saturday afternoon, still needed more time to settle the score. Play resumed with about five minutes left in the third quarter and DePaul Prep tied the game seven plays into the first series. There was no other scoring in regulation. In overtime, Round Lake got the ball first and scored a touchdown on its second play. Then the Panthers came up with a huge tackle-for-loss during DePaul Prep’s possession that helped preserve a 21-14 victory.

  • Round Lake hopes faster means better Aug 22, 2014 10:13 PM
Football linemen stood on a track, ready to sprint. Race officials holding stopwatches put them down in favor of ... calendars. “A team would come here for track (in the spring) and we’d have 40 guys running the 100,” Round Lake football coach Jordan Eder joked. “Not that we were going to win, but it was something we could track and a way to keep them running and in shape.” Having seen at previous assistant-coaching stops at Grant and Carmel the benefits of football players running track, Eder focused on the strategy after taking over at Round Lake last year. He counted about 70 Panthers who swapped their football cleats for track cleats in the spring. The results were immediate — fast.

Grayslake North’s softball players gave a listen to Mariah’s voice. Then they rocked Round Lake. After Round Lake’s young, scrappy Panthers threw 5 runs on the board in the second inning of Wednesday’s Class 4A McHenry regional play-in, host Grayslake North hustled into its dugout. Mariah Gentile, running in from her position in center field, shouted words of encouragement to her teammates. “I just said, ‘There’s a lot of game left. Let’s stay positive,’ ” Gentile said. The Knights most positively did that, with a “Make It Happen” approach, so to speak. They scored 13 unanswered runs en route to a 16-6 win.
