    Harper speech, debate team takes fourth at Nationals May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Harper College Speech Team finished fourth in the nation at the recent Phi Rho Pi National community college speech and debate tournament, besting dozens of fellow community colleges and boasting two individual champions. Elisa Galvan of Schaumburg and Brianna Bitout of Arlington Heights netted gold medals for extemporaneous and impromptu speaking, respectively.

    Waubonsee Community College eliminated the Harper College baseball team from postseason play with a 13-1 victory Sunday in the decisive game of their best-of-three NJCAA regional series in Sugar Grove. The Chiefs advance to the NJCAA World Series in Tyler, Texas.

    Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 has named two more new principals and two more assistant principals for the 2013-14 school year. Julie Gluff will be principal of Hale Elementary and Nell Haack will be principal of Collins Elementary. Catherine Kurtz will be assistant principal of Einstein Elementary and Joe McCauley will be assistant principal of Hale Elementary.

Yet, these students never took classes at the school's campus in Romeoville. Through a so-called 3+1 program partnership between Lewis and College of DuPage, the students earned their four-year degrees from Lewis by taking all their classes at COD's campus in Glen Ellyn.

    Included in the 550 or so students who donned caps and gowns Saturday at Harper College's commencement was a contingent not yet old enough to vote, but qualified to take vital signs, transfer patients and practice infection control. A total of 18 high-schoolers, 17 from Wheeling High School alone, walked after completing their Certified Nursing Assistant certificate, among the numerous fast-growing dual credit options that Harper offers.

    Silver linings for Palatine 3,200 relay, Meadows’ Keller May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
    Tess Wasowicz put her best foot forward — and didn't wince. In the end, all was well in a season that wasn't always well for the Palatine star. What the senior described as a "stress reaction" in her left foot kept her from competing on the track for half the season, but the perennial state qualifier left Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium with a runner-up state medal draped over her neck after joining 3,200-meter relay teammates Kara Burton, Liz Cox and Cassidy McPherson ran strong on the season's final day, finishing second (9:12.21) in the Class 3A race behind only New Trier (9:04.86). Another state veteran, Rolling Meadows senior thrower Morgan Keller, also left Charleston happy. She finished in second place in the discus (149 feet, 7 inches).

    Ariel Valles pitched her final regular-season game on the varsity diamond where she has spent most of her high school softball career. The Maine West senior made it a game to remember by tossing a 5-0 shutout over visiting Schaumburg on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader in Des Plaines. The Saxons took Game 2 behind a 7-hitter from sophomore Shannon Felde.

     
  • Lin tops Galvin at Glenbrook North sectional May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
    Schaumburg sophomore singles standout Vincent Lin (13-0) showed the fans in Northbrook exactly how to do it on Saturday. Lin netted a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory over Mid-Suburban League foe Mack Galvin (28-5) to win the singles crown at the Glenbrook North boys tennis sectional. Lin's sparkling performance sent him to his second consecutive appearance in the state tournament. Galvin, a freshman at Rolling Meadows, earned his first state experience. The host Spartans accrued 17 points to win the team trophy, outscoring Glenbrook South (11), Schaumburg (10) and MSL East champion Rolling Meadows (8).

    Adjunct professors at the College of DuPage are set to receive salary increases as part of a two-year contract extension approved Thursday by the college’s board of trustees. College officials offered the contract extension to adjuncts as a package along with a plan to create a new “lecturer” position that would allow some adjuncts to receive health care benefits under the new federal health care law.
