Tri-Cities area boys tennis preview Mar 28, 2013 12:00 AM
The battle for the best boys tennis team in the Upstate Eight Conference could not have been much more competitive than it was a year ago, and all signs point to a repeat of that exciting race this spring.

Scouting Tri-Cities area boys volleyball teamsMar 22, 2013 12:00 AM
In just its second year with a boys volleyball program in 2012, Geneva went 17-12 and tied St. Charles East for the Upstate Eight Conference River title. While starting a team can often lead to years of growing pains and losing seasons, Vikings coach KC Johnsen thinks he knows why the Vikings have been successful so quickly. "We've been lucky that some really good athletes have decided to give volleyball a try," Johnsen said. "That makes a lot of difference. They pick it up very fast and move well on the court and are competitive guys and jump a little bit. Makes it a quicker jump start. (We wouldn't have won so fast) if we didn't have such good athletes."

Cubs affiliation excites Cougars Mar 18, 2013 12:00 AM
So much for Spring fever. It certainly hasn't felt like baseball weather these days. Bone-chilling temperatures have been the norm instead of the exception this month while shoveling snow has been much more commonplace than seeing local baseball or softball players swinging bats outdoors. At this point, I'd actually settle for a few 45-degree afternoons rather than the 30-degree temperatures that we've been experiencing lately across Chicagoland. But believe it or not, baseball season is just around the corner — I think. Weather permitting, of course. Nobody is looking forward to the first pitch of the 2013 season more than Kane County Cougars general manager Curtis Haug.

Looking back at the best of the basketball season Mar 13, 2013 12:00 AM
As the high school boys basketball season enters its final week, one important question remains — can anyone stop Simeon from capturing its fourth consecutive Class 4A state championship this weekend in Peoria? West Aurora, which suffered a 60-47 loss to the 3-time defending state champions in the finals of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament back in late December, found itself one half away from another crack at the top-ranked Wolverines until a 17-0 third-quarter run by Proviso East in Tuesday night's Hinsdale Central supersectional ended the Blackhawks' season. Proviso East's 62-52 come-from-beind win sets up a rematch of last year's 4A state title game — won by Simeon in an instant classic, 50-48. It has been 5 years since the last non-Chicago Public League team captured the 4A state title — Richards in 2008. Here is my personal recap of the 2012-13 boys/girls basketball season:

Everyone shares a goal next week — survive and advance Feb 23, 2013 12:00 AM
There are a few weeks of the year that I enjoy a little more than most. This coming week is one of them. Monday night signals the opening tip-off of the Illinois High School Association's annual basketball tournament at gymnasiums throughout the state. It's America's Original March Madness with a 4-day head start this time around that I like to call, "February Frenzy."

No questions about what ‘Q’ has meant to Poulin, N. Stars Feb 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Known to many as "Q," Quinten Payne has made quite an impact on the St. Charles North's basketball program since his arrival as a sophomore two years ago. After averaging 12.3 points and 5 rebounds per game as a sophomore, Payne earned all-Upstate Eight Conference River Division honors for the second straight season a year ago while scoring 17 points and snaring 6.7 rebounds per contest. The 6-foot-4 guard has saved the best for last during his senior campaign this season.

Rosary overcomes injuries to reach regional final Feb 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Karly Tate is the heart and soul of the Rosary girls basketball team. When Tate went down after a hard foul on a drive to the basket early in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s Class 3A Crane regional game against Raby, the team was reeling. Tate got cut above her left eye and there was blood all over her face and some on the floor. Tate would not return and became the third Royals starter on the bench with an injury. Guard Rachel Choice hurt her right ankle in the second quarter and another guard, Quincy Kellett, didn’t play at all because of an ankle injury. But despite these setbacks, Rosary showed its heart as a team and pulled together down the stretch to capture a 56-42 victory over the Raiders on the west side of Chicago. The Royals will play Montini for the regional championship tonight at 7:30 p.m.

New Rosary coach Jessie Wilcox got a chance to honor her first class of seniors Wednesday night in front of a packed gym against archrival Aurora Central Catholic. Maddy Hemmerich, Madison Richmond, Amy Seraphin, Karly Tate and Mary Wentworth plus senior manager Kianna Musaraca got to go out with a win, erasing an early 8-point Chargers lead for a 44-38 victory that clinched third place in the Suburban Catholic Conference.

Meet St. Charles East’s Super FanJan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
He may not be St. Charles East's loudest fan but he is undoubtedly one of the school's most loyal supporters. Meet Lloyd Jones St. Charles East Super Fan. Whether it's a Saints home girls volleyball match or boys/girls basketball game, Jones likely can be found sitting in his customary spot along the wall just to the right of the main entrance to the gymnasium.

Aurora Central rallies from 11 down Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Aurora Central Catholic mounted a furious second half run, rallying from an 11-point deficit to edge Guerin Prep 51-50 in Suburban Christian Blue action. The host Chargers (11-11, 2-7) were led by senior co-captains Alex DeCreane with 19 and Lisa Rodriguez with 11. Both hit pressure free throws late in the 4th quarter to stave off Guerin's comeback attempt. ACC avenged a 55-54 loss to Guerin on Dec. 7.
