  • Softball / Northwest roundup May 3, 2014 1:01 AM
    Trailing 7-3, Buffalo Grove scored 7 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to handing visiting Conant its first loss this softball season. Junior ace Julia Camardo (8-4) won her third straight game since returning from an injury as the Bison (10-8, 6-3) won 10-9 and took a half-game lead over Elk Grove (19-3, 5-3) in the Mid-Suburban East.

     
  • Elk Grove students rally around coach with breast cancer May 5, 2014 1:24 PM
    Last week’s water polo games between Elk Grove and Rolling Meadows high schools drew a standing-room-only crowd — and yet it was hard to tell which fans were which. Fans and players alike were all were wearing the same T-shirt, which read: "Rivals united for a cause." For one day at least, the two teams — which share the Elk Grove High School pool — came together in support of the Lady Grenadiers’ 28-year old varsity coach, Alexa Rodheim, who is battling a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer.

     
  • Fremd finishes ‘curse’ with MSL triumph May 2, 2014 10:24 PM
    Fremd ended its curse Friday at the Mid-Suburban League boys gymnastics meet at Palatine on Friday. The Vikings had always found themselves on the short end at the conference meet, with several near misses at winning a league championship. “We have had some very good teams here,” Fremd coach Tim Hamman said. “But there is always a Conant, or Palatine or some other team that has a state-qualifying team.” Not this year, though, as Fremd proved to be the best of the bunch in winning its first MSL title with a score of 136.95. The Vikings are also MSL West Division champs.

    With his professional football dream just around the corner, Jimmy Garoppolo went back to his roots on Thursday. Garoppolo, who is expected to be highly drafted in next week’s NFL draft, stopped by Rolling Meadows High School, where he was honored with a school assembly.

    Palatine edged Barrington for top honors in Tuesday's Mid-Suburban West girls track meet, while Prospect and Wheeling went 1-2 in the MSL East meet.

    Prospect earned its seventh straight MSL East boys track title on Tuesday, while Barrington and Fremd tied for the MSL West crown.

     
  • Time limit leaves Wheeling, Meadows tied after 8 Apr 29, 2014 9:11 PM
    Rolling Meadows and Wheeling tried to turf out a game Tuesday. It wasn’t the weather that spoiled the plan, but rather time. With games cancelled due to rain or wet field conditions, the game between Meadows and Wheeling was moved to the new turf fields at Heritage Park in Wheeling. And while the field conditions were superb, the game ended with no decision as the teams played to 2-2 tie after 8 innings. Despite having lights at the field, the game was called due to a time limit imposed before the game because the new fields were reserved for another game at 6:30 p.m.

     
  • Lugo leads late Hoffman Estates surge Apr 29, 2014 11:12 PM
    Gregg Lugo came up big for the Hoffman Estates boys volleyball team Tuesday night at Conant. The hard-hitting senior outside had 11 kills – 3 of them down the stretch in game 3 – as the Hawks overcame a strong effort by the never-say-die Cougars to win 25-19, 20-25, 25-18 in the Mid-Suburban West.

     
  • Lynch, Garoppolo earn Gruden’s QB spotlight Apr 28, 2014 12:25 PM
    Two NFL prospects with ties to Chicago and the suburbs — former Northern Illinois University quarterback Jordan Lynch and former Eastern Illinois University quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo — will appear this week on episodes of ESPN’s “Gruden’s QB Camp.”

    Visting Barrington scored twice in the third and twice in the sixth, and their pitchers did the rest as the Broncos earned a 4-0 victory over New Trier on Saturday in nonconference play.

     
  • Schaumburg grabs share of West lead Apr 25, 2014 10:50 PM
    Schaumburg’s softball team moved into a first-place tie with Conant (9-0, 6-0) in the Mid-Suburban West with its 16-2 five-inning victory at Palatine on Friday. The Saxons (13-4, 6-0) received a 4-hitter from junior Shannon Felde (6-1), who struck out six while junior shortstop Elaine Walker helped ignite the offense by going 2-for-4 with a home run, double and 2 RBI. Classmate Roxanne Kakareka also belted a homer for Saxons and collected 4 RBI.

     
  • Donohue delivers walk-off winner for Prospect Apr 25, 2014 10:53 PM
    Prospect pulled out an extra-inning victory in Mid-Suburban League baseball Friday. The Knights first rallied to score 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and tie up their game against visiting Palatine. That set the stage for Pat Donohue, who hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish a 7-5 Knights triumph.

     
  • Schaumburg’s Alt tags a no-hit halt on another foe Apr 24, 2014 11:55 PM
    Paige “No Hit’ Alt did it again. The Schaumburg sophomore threw her third straight no-hitter on Thursday with a 10-0 shutout over visiting Wheeling in five innings. Alt has not given up a hit in 17 innings. Her previous two no-hitters were against the Prospect and Hoffman Estates softball teams.

     
  • Conant falls short against Benet Apr 24, 2014 11:59 PM
    Brian Polaski allowed 1 run on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts through 7 innings before visiting Benet broke through for 6 runs in the top of the eighth inning against Conant relievers to claim a 7-1 nonconference baseball victory Thursday.

    If Arlington Heights native and Rolling Meadows High School graduate Jimmy Garoppolo had kept a low profile, the Bears could have drafted the Eastern Illinois University quarterback in the late rounds and groomed him behind Jay Cutler. But Garoppolo's exceptional performances in postseason all-star games and practices elevated his status among NFL talent evaluators, and he could be drafted as early as the second round.

     
  • Rolling Meadows continues to make gains Apr 23, 2014 10:54 PM
    The continued improvement from an inexperienced Rolling Meadows girls soccer team was evident Wednesday as the Mustangs (3-7-1, 3-3-0, 9 points) defeated visiting Hoffman Estates 2-0 on the turf at Robert Hoese Field in Mid-Suburban League play.

     
  • Olsen delivers for Wheeling Apr 23, 2014 11:48 PM
    With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Wheeling junior catcher Megan Olsen singled to right to drive home Nikki Mikosz from second base for the winning run in the Wildcats’ 8-7 victory over Hersey at Heritage Park. The host Wildcats improved to 3-7 and 2-2 in the Mid-Suburban East softball standing as senior Katie Quagliano earned the win with 5 strikeouts in 9 innings.

     
  • Schocking finish as Schaumburg wins again Apr 23, 2014 10:05 PM
    Schaumburg’s Ryan Schocker jolted Conant on Thursday. Schocker lined a two-out single to right driving home Michael Fan to lift the Saxons to a 5-4 baseball victory in Schaumburg. “I just wasn’t going to give up,” said Schocker, who was behind in the count early and worked it to 3-2 before delivering the winning hit. “I did what had to get done. I worked the count and then I had to get the right pitch. It was a 3-2 fastball and I just went with the pitch.” Fan was down 0-2 in the count with two outs but was able to coax a walk. He then advanced to second on a passed ball and scored easily on Schocker’s rip to right. The victory kept the Saxons (10-1, 5-0) atop the Mid-Suburban West and made a winner out of starter Brendan Beck, who improved to 4-0.

     
  • Conant has the answer in win against Elk Grove Apr 22, 2014 9:41 PM
    When Becca Maher raced across home plate on Brianna Leach’s double to give Elk Grove a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, Conant’s players weren’t too happy. “We got really motivated when they scored first,” said Cougars junior shortstop DeeDee Durr. “It’s our home field and we normally score first.” The Cougars didn’t wait long to take out their frustration. They answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the third and went on to post a 9-4 victory over the visiting Grenadiers (13-3, 2-2) in the Mid-Suburban League softball game.

     
  • Nenn, Barrington rise up against Schaumburg Apr 22, 2014 10:16 PM
    Halfway through the Mid-Suburban League boys volleyball season, Barrington is right where it wants to be: Undefeated in conference play, and in first place in the West Division. Led by senior defensive specialist Indy Nenn (10 digs), the Broncos scored a resounding 25-16, 25-17 victory over visiting Schaumburg on Tuesday in a battle of teams that both came in to the match with 4-0 conference records.
