    Thieves broke through a fence between 2 p.m. Oct. 4 and 6 a.m. Oct. 6 at a construction site on the 2000 block of South Clearwater Drive in Des Plaines, broke into a tool container and stole several saws, drills, cable cutters, grinder, torch sets and wobble lights. Thieves also stole scrap copper and scrap condensers. Loss was estimated at $17,680.

    Two leaf blowers, a chain saw, two weed trimmers, and one hedge trimmer, worth a combined $2,000, were stolen between noon Oct. 1 and 5 p.m. Oct. 9 after someone broke into a metal trailer in the backyard of a home on the 100 block of Old Farm Lane near Carpentersville, according to a sheriff’s report.

Taken were GPS systems, change, golf clubs, cellphones, car speakers in boxes, laptop computers, USB drives, cash and wallets.

    A 65-inch television, pair of earrings and $250 were stolen from a residence on the 42W100 block of Timber Trail between 8 a.m. Sept. 26 and 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30 near St. Charles after someone broke a basement window to gain entry, according to a sheriff’s report. The total loss was $3,500.

    A Hoffman Estates woman lost $1,180 after a scammer contacted her about a couch she was selling for $300 on Craigslist. The offender sent her a check for $1,480 and told her to deposit the check in her account and send $1,180 by Western Union. She then sent the $1,180 in cash and it was accepted. Only after the transaction did she find out from her bank that the check was fraudulent.

    Brandon L. Roby, 18, of Elgin, was charged Wednesday with burglary, according to a police report. Video surveillance from July 7 shows Roby broke the front window of a store in the 300 block of South McLean Boulevard and took cartons and packs of cigarettes valued at $293.60. Police received confirmation Monday from the Illinois State Police crime lab that blood stains inside the business matched Roby’s DNA on file.

    Eric M. Shodeen, 49, of Geneva, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or greater, driving without lights when required and improper parking on a roadway at 8:47 p.m. Tuesday after a traffic stop at South Peck and Keslinger roads near Geneva, according to a sheriff’s report.
