Waubonsie Valley never did solve Abriya Zeitz on Monday night in Lemont. The West Aurora junior forward more or less personally closed out the Warriors' girls basketball season by scoring a game-high 16 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, stealing 4 passes and adding a trio of assists in the Blackhawks' 42-31 victory in a Class 4A Lemont regional quarterfinal.

New Philharmonic gets three-concert reprieve Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
A 36-year-old professional orchestra that appeared to be playing its last note at the College of DuPage is getting an encore. College officials have agreed to give the New Philharmonic orchestra a 3-concert season in 2013-14 after receiving letters and emails from patrons upset that the 80-member ensemble might have given its final curtain call at a January concert. The orchestra had been performing at the college's McAninch Arts Center in Glen Ellyn until this season, when a $35 million renovation project began that forced the orchestra to schedule concerts off-campus.

Zak attack leads to 11th-place medal Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Grant senior Sami Jo Zak practiced day after day over the last few years, harboring a dream of making it to state one day. She ended up carrying the dream farther than she ever imagined possible on Saturday afternoon in the girls bowling state tournament at Cherry Bowl Lanes. Zak wasn’t sure if she was in line to receive one of the top 12 medals, even after throwing a final game of 257. The final announcement that Zak finished 11th place with a 12-game total of 2,554 pins caught her by a total surprise.

No. 16 Geneva turned the tables on a 23-point loss the day after Thanksgiving in a big way Friday in Naperville, surprising No. 2 Neuqua Valley 54-46 in a matchup of Upstate Eight Conference division champions.

Neuqua Valley's boys basketball team is zeroing in on a seventh conference title and first since 2010. Defending champion Metea Valley (15-8, 8-2) hopes 5-17 South Elgin — which Neuqua (22-2, 10-1 UEC Valley) beat 71-32 on Dec. 15 — can pull off the upset and the Mustangs can beat Waubonsie Valley and Bartlett to force a first-place tie.

Even if Waubonsie Valley’s thrilling win in the 400-yard freestyle relay wasn’t enough to overtake St. Charles North for the Upstate Eight team title, the Warriors did manage to cap off the conference meet in style and send themselves off to sectionals with a big boost of confidence.

Sandifer sparks Neuqua Valley past Bartlett Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
With combined 31.3 percent shooting from the field and 31 turnovers, the offenses of the Neuqua Valley and Bartlett basketball teams had all the harmony of an out-of-tune orchestra Friday. So it was two instances of sweet string music from Neuqua’s Jabari Sandifer that helped spell the difference as the Wildcats gritted out a crucial 41-30 Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division victory over the visiting Hawks.

Suburban cheer teams move on to finals Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
The finals are set, and lots of suburban high schools will compete for the IHSA state cheerleading championships on Saturday in Bloomington. Perennial coed powerhouse Buffalo Grove High School led all scorers Friday, finishing with 91.72 points out of a possible 100.
