    Seven years ago, a group of Palatine High School girls approached Leslie Schock with the idea to start a lacrosse team. Schock, who at the time was already the head girls basketball coach at the school, obliged. She put together a team and now, in her eighth year, the Pirates enjoyed their finest campaign. They posted an impressive 15-3 record and won the Mid-Suburban League conference title for the second straight season with a 5-0 record.

    Warren pitcher Andrew Hill did not know what the pitcher’s best friend was. But the junior found out very quickly in his team’s 3-2 victory Thursday in the Palatine regional. Twice Hill found himself in a jam, and twice the Blue Devils defense came through, turning double plays, including one to end the tightly played game.

    Brooke Barges belted 2 home runs and Aleece Duffy had one as Elk Grove powered its way into Saturday’s championship game of the St. Charles East regional championship with a 13-2 victory over Elgin in five innings. Hall of Fame coach Ken Grams’ Grenadiers, seeded No. 6, will face No. 3 St. Charles East at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

     
  • St. Viator rides out storm, Northtown May 27, 2014 11:34 PM
    It’s off to a Class 3A regional for St. Viator’softball team. The No. 4-seeded Lions (18-14) advanced with a win over No. 13 Chicago Northtown Academy. Lions ace Sam Hogan (14-10) gave up 1 hit with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk as Viator built an 8-0 lead after four innings. The Pumas were batting in the top of the fifth with one out when the rains hit and the game was postponed. The visitors chose not to return to Arlington Heights at a later date, making it a forfeit win according to the IHSA.

     
  • Palatine tops Prospect in a wild one May 26, 2014 9:57 PM
    Monday’s play-in game of the Class 4A New Trier softball regional between No. 17 seed Prospect and No. 16 Palatine featured 1 run through the first 3½ innings. The next 3½ innings? How about 26 runs? As if the two offenses were playing a ‘can you top this?’ game, the runs were coming at a frantic pace before the host Pirates crossed the plate nine times in the bottom of the sixth inning. That proved to be the difference in Palatine’s 16-11 triumph. The Pirates (10-24) move on to the semifinal at top-seeded New Trier (27-4-1) today at 4:30 p.m.

  • Softball / Playoff scouting, Northwest May 24, 2014 9:27 PM
    The path to East Peoria for the 2014 IHSA state softball tourney begins today for six area teams who are competing in play-in games for Class 4A regionals. Regional semifinals take place on Tuesday and Wednesday with most championships on Saturday. One exception is the Cary-Grove regional where the title game is scheduled for Friday.

  • Elk Grove's Maher makes her mark with homer No. 11 May 24, 2014 8:38 PM
    Elk Grove shortstop Becca Maher finished the regular season on Saturday in record style. Maher led off the first game of a doubleheader against host Trinity by belting a home run. It was her 11th of the season, setting the school’s single season mark previously held by Dani Goranson and Megan Keegan. The Grens went on to top the Blazers 13-7 at the Triton College softball diamond. For good measure, Maher belted her 12th homer in Game 2 which the Grenadiers won 13-9 by scoring 4 runs in the top of the eighth inning to top the Blazers (20-12).

     
  • McAuley stops Palatine in state tourney May 23, 2014 11:53 PM
    Palatine’s first trip to the girls water polo Elite Eight ended with a 13-8 loss to Mother McAuley on Friday night at Stevenson High School. Coach Mitch Tucker hopes it can also be a beginning of sorts.
