  • Red Wings’ play frustrates Blackhawks May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
It's not easy to frustrate Jonathan Toews, but Henrik Zetterberg and the Red Wings were able to do it Saturday. Zetterberg had 2 assists and got away with a few shots that the Blackhawks captain thought should have been penalties in Detroit's 4-1 win at the United Center in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals. "I'm not going to go off and complain about some calls I thought should have been called or whatever, but if that's the way they're going to play we need to play the same way," Toews said. "There's a lot of clutch and grab, a lot of interference. If they're going to let that go, that's something we need to know and maybe do it to them a little bit." The Hawks were short-handed four times; the Red Wings twice.

  • Why isn’t Stalberg playing? It’s in the numbers May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
A frustrated Viktor Stalberg met with reporters again Friday and disputed various reports that he was benched for Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against Detroit because he complained about power-play time in the first round. "(I'll) channel my inner (Ilya) Bryzgalov: Check your sources better, I guess," Stalberg said. "No, that was not accurate." But a source Friday stood by the claim that Stalberg was unhappy with his power-play role, adding Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville also doesn't like these two statistics when it comes to the winger: 1 goal in 18 career playoff games and 2 assists on the power play during the regular season in 47 games. According to NHL.com, Stalberg saw 103 minutes and 6 seconds of power-play time during the regular season, 81.8 percent of the it skating with Hawks leading scorer Patrick Kane in 5-on-4 situations, and had no goals and 2 assists.

Quenneville one of 3 finalists for coach of the yearMay 17, 2013 12:00 AM
The scowl, the mustache, the steely eyes behind the bench — it's all part of what makes Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville so intimidating. Or is he? "He's a big teddy bear," said Hawks center Dave Bolland. "Bolly? Really? Teddy bear? I've never been called that one before," Quenneville said. Quenneville was the center attention Friday after being named one of the three finalists for the Jack Adams Trophy, which goes to the coach of the year.

Spellman's Scorecard: Not best of times for Allstate Arena May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
It hasn't been the best of weeks for Allstate Arena general manager Pat Nagle. First, he discovers the new owner of the Chicago Rush has been accused of not paying the team's bills and thus, for the second time in recent years, the team is taken over by the league — once again leaving the future of the franchise in limbo. And then it's announced Thursday that another Allstate tenant, DePaul, will soon be playing its games in a new downtown arena.

Hawks’ Kruger embraces role as penalty killer May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Marcus Kruger’s stall is next to Jonathan Toews’ in the Blackhawks’ dressing room — and before every game the captain will lean over and give the kid some advice. “I sit next to Krugs in the locker room and every game I kind of get in his ear and just tell him shoot the puck or just go to the net and he’s going to get an ugly one,” Toews said. Kruger scored a goal in the Hawks’ 4-1 win against Detroit in Game 1, his second of the playoffs, putting him 2 up on the scoreless Toews. “Yesterday I told him the same thing: go to the net and get a dirty one,” Kruger said jokingly. It’s Kruger and Michael Frolik helping make the penalty kill a perfect 20-for-20 in the playoffs.

Blackhawks know battle with Red Wings has just begun May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
These are the Detroit Red Wings, and they’re not going to go away quietly. The Blackhawks know this from experience. If anything, Wednesday’s 4-1 win by the Hawks in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals will only serve as motivation for the Red Wings to come back with a better effort on Saturday in Game 2. That’s what the Hawks are expecting anyway.
