This was the type of game the Addison Trail boys basketball team must keep winning to claim its first conference championship since its 1982-83 Des Plaines Valley League title.

Maybe Leyden was just conserving offensive firepower through the first six weeks of the season. The floodgates opened in Week 7 for the Eagles, who rolled past Morton 52-20 on Friday in West Suburban Gold play in Berwyn.

Addison Trail's first goal for the 2014 season was achieved Friday night. In spoiling Morton's homecoming and winning 40-14, the Blazers have earned a playoff spot.

As teammates hoisted Morton kicker Rodolfo Villalon on their shoulders, Willowbrook's football players were left in stunned pain. Villalon's 37-yard field goal in the waning seconds lifted the Mustangs to Saturday's 17-16 West Suburban Gold Conference win over Willowbrook on its homecoming in Villa Park. The Warriors (0-5, 0-2) dealt with the pain of the moment as well as the realization that their fifth loss means elimination from playoff qualification.
Glenbard West leaves room for improvement

For all the sloppy play, Glenbard West's football team still did what it usually does at home. The Hilltoppers dominated. Outgaining Morton by a near four-to-one margin in total yardage, Glenbard West easily rolled to a 42-0 West Suburban Conference crossover victory Saturday at Glen Ellyn's Duchon Field.
Eight men ordained as deacons by Chicago Archdiocese

Eight men, six from the North suburbs, have been ordained as deacons by Cardinal Francis George. They had to complete a four-year program through the Institute for Diaconal Studies at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

Glenbard South back to winning ways

Morton probably could have picked a better day to make a visit to Glenbard South. The Mustangs came to Glen Ellyn on Saturday morning for a nonconference softball battle against a Raiders squad determined to bounce back from a rare conference setback. And bounce back Glenbard South did -- in a big way -- using a 7-run fifth inning to finish off Morton 14-4 in 5 innings.Morton probably could have picked a better day to make a visit to Glenbard South.
