    Eight men, six from the North suburbs, have been ordained as deacons by Cardinal Francis George. They had to complete a four-year program through the Institute for Diaconal Studies at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

The Mustangs came to Glen Ellyn on Saturday morning for a nonconference softball battle against a Raiders squad determined to bounce back from a rare conference setback. And bounce back Glenbard South did — in a big way — using a 7-run fifth inning to finish off Morton 14-4 in 5 innings.Morton probably could have picked a better day to make a visit to Glenbard South.

    Missed shots and costly turnovers were Conant’s demise at Morton on Friday night. The Cougars had been hoping to advance to the Bartlett sectional, but those plans were dashed when the Cougars lost to the No. 4-seeded Mustangs in Class 4A regional final action in Cicero 36-24.

    Apparently, Naperville Central’s Devon Amoo-Mensah is so good that he scores goals even when he doesn’t. The senior all-stater appeared to head in the game-winning goal at the 63rd minute of Tuesday’s Class 3A Romeoville supersectional at Lewis University. The thing is, he didn’t need to. Still, he was right there to ensure Jay Tegge’s corner kick curved in. It proved to be all that the Redhawks needed in a 2-0 victory over Morton to advance to this weekend’s state finals.

    Each goalkeeper made key saves Thursday night to keep the Pepsi Showdown boys soccer quarterfinal scoreless. Unfortunately for Huntley, goalkeeper Austen Emery had little chance with 7 seconds remaining. Morton’s Leo Delgado headed a free kick past Emery and into the net to send the Mustangs to a 1-0 victory over the Red Raiders in Huntley.

    Scott Andrews scored 3 touchdowns and six of his teammates also reached the end zone as defending Class 7A champion Glenbard West routed Morton 68-7 in a West Suburban Conference crossover football game.

    Less than 65 seconds into Friday's West Suburban Conference Gold game, Leyden's girls basketball team found itself trailing 8-0 visiting Morton. "That did make things tough," said Eagles senior guard Victoria Galizia, who will play for North Central College next season. "Right away, the momentum went into Morton's hands." The Mustangs increased the lead to 10-0 with 5:37 left in the first quarter and never looked back while recording a 50-34 triumph.

  • Improved defense keys Benet victory Dec 27, 2012 9:49 PM
    Benet boys basketball coach Gene Heidkamp didn’t even wait for the first question of his postgame media session to be finished. He knew exactly what won this game. “Better defense,” Heidkamp said after notching his 100th victory with the program. “I’ll make it real short for you. In the first half we didn’t defend like we expect to defend. And from the three-minute mark of the second quarter into the second half we played defense like we expect to play defense.” Scoring the first 16 points of the fourth quarter, Benet pulled away to a 63-49 victory over Morton in second-round action from the Proviso West Holiday Tournament on Thursday in Hillside. The Redwings (12-2) advance to the quarterfinals to face powerhouse Proviso East (8-2) at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

    Willowbrook coach Terry Harrell knows his team learned a lesson or two Tuesday night when visiting Morton stormed back to erase a big lead late. But he also knows his team grew a little along the way and, oh, by the way, still came away with a key 76-71 West Suburban Gold victory over the much-improved Mustangs.

    Morton showed no letdown after its heart-breaking 1-0 loss in the Pepsi Showdown last Sunday at Toyota Park. The Mustangs gave a superb 80-minute performance Tuesday night before a big home crowd at Leyden in a 2-0 victory.
