    Marmion sends 7 to state Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
    Metea Valley wrestling coach Claudio Torres spoke for many of his brethren when sizing up the field of the Class 3A Shepard sectional Saturday evening in Palos Heights. "It’s like a mini-state tournament,” Torres said. “I have seen so many state qualifiers (from past years) get eliminated already. There are ranked wrestlers not getting out (to the individual state tournament this week in Champaign).” Defending team state champion Sandburg was the true measuring stick with 10 qualifiers, and the field included some of the top Catholic schools in the state. Marmion went toe-to-toe with the likes of Marist, St. Rita — its team-sectional dual-meet foe a week from Tuesday at Hinsdale South — and Mt. Carmel to lead the area programs with seven state qualifiers.

    St. Charles East’s Katie Claussner is gaining confidence at just the right time. The sophomore guard led the Saints with a team-high 20 points including three big 3-pointers down the stretch, leading to a 68-61 victory at Metea Valley in a match-up of the Upstate Eight River and Upstate Eight Valley second place teams.

     
  • Metea Valley pulls away from Bartlett Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
    Fresh off a 51-50 win at Hinsdale Central on Friday night, the Metea Valley girls basketball team followed up by defeating host Bartlett 51-43 on Saturday to finish both team’s Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division schedules. Heading into the fourth quarter trailing 31-30, the Mustangs (21-5, 10-2) came through down the stretch outscoring the Hawks (14-12, 7-5) 21-12 in the final period.

    Even if Waubonsie Valley’s thrilling win in the 400-yard freestyle relay wasn’t enough to overtake St. Charles North for the Upstate Eight team title, the Warriors did manage to cap off the conference meet in style and send themselves off to sectionals with a big boost of confidence.

    Lori Obendorf can’t play with injured Metea Valley teammate Anna Petersen anymore, but Petersen’s embrace was the first place Obendorf went to celebrate a win Friday. “We’re kind of best friends. We hug a lot,” Obendorf said. “I really miss having her on the court.” Obendorf and the Mustangs are down two starters now, but they proved Friday they’re not out. Down 9 midway through the third quarter at Hinsdale Central, No. 9 Metea Valley rallied for a 51-50 win, reaching the 20-win benchmark for the first time in the young program’s history.

    The finals are set, and lots of suburban high schools will compete for the IHSA state cheerleading championships on Saturday in Bloomington. Perennial coed powerhouse Buffalo Grove High School led all scorers Friday, finishing with 91.72 points out of a possible 100.

    Cheerleading squads from all over Illinois converge on Bloomington Friday as the 2013 IHSA's competitive cheerleading state championships open. The suburbs are well represented in the 100 schools that made the championships. "We're so excited," said Conant cheerleading coach Dana Muszynski. "We're a young team, but they're very determined and driven." Only the top 10 in each of the three divisions return to compete on Saturday for the state titles.

    Tired Curia wins for Naperville North Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
    Naperville North's Eric Curia is officially ready for the postseason. Curia, who qualified for state last year in both the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle, won the 500 and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team at Saturday's Metea Valley's Mustang Invite. "My strategy for in-season racing is to get as tired as possible, and being this tired and winning today means I'm ready for my taper," said Curia, who will play water polo at the U.S. Air Force Academy next year. "In the 500 I just try to go out fast and hang on to the end. My goals are to break 4:30 at state and finish in the top six." Curia's time for the 500 on Saturday was 4:48.11.

    The Illinois High School Association cheerleading sectionals took place Saturday at Rolling Meadows High School. Among the top scorers were Neuqua Valley High School, James B. Conant High School, Vernon Hills High School and Buffalo Grove High School. "The kids worked really hard, and I have an outstanding coaching staff," said Buffalo Grove coach Jeffrey Siegal.
