  • Burlington Central heads to sectional final Feb 19, 2013 12:00 AM
Not many freshmen are challenged with stopping the other team’s best player, especially in a sectional semifinal. Burlington Central’s Kayla Ross was handed that task in the second half Tuesday night, and she came through with flying colors. Ross spearheaded a Rockets’ defense that held Marian Central senior standout Shannon Wuensch without a field goal in the second half, and the Rockets turned on the afterburners in the fourth quarter in a 54-29 win over Marian in the semifinals of the Class 3A Genoa-Kingston girls basketball sectional.

  • St. Edward’s depth does in Marian Central Feb 6, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Edward boys basketball coach P.J. White has two things most coaches would die to have on their teams: depth and balance. They're two significant pieces of success for the Green Wave this season and when White saw two key players have off nights in Elgin Wednesday night, there wasn't any worry. In the Green Wave's 60-48 Suburban Christian Gold Blue win over Marian Central (3-23, 2-6), Anotnio Domel, Danny Favela and John Butzow carried the slack. Butzow poured in a game-high 15 points while Favela scored 13 and led the team in rebounds with 9. As for Domel, he had 9 points and 4 assists as the three spearheaded the Green Wave's full-court defense, a major problem for Marian Central in the first half.

  • Jacobs opens tourney with win Dec 22, 2012 12:00 AM
If there was ever a right way for Jacobs to begin retiring coach Jim Hinkle's last holiday tournament, a 56-35 opening victory over Marian Central in the 13th annual Golden Eagles' tournament that was Hinkle's creation will more than certainly do the trick, as the Eagles look to win their tournament for the first time since 2008.

  • St. Edward topples Marian Central Dec 4, 2012 12:00 AM
The burgeoning St. Edward boys basketball team needed a half to get its legs loose before outrunning Marian Central for a 64-51 Suburban Christian Gold victory in Woodstock Tuesday. The balanced Green Wave turned a 3-point halftime lead into a 13-point victory by pressing, running the floor and sharing the basketball. The Wave notched 10 points off Hurricane turnovers in the backcourt and four players scored in double-digits as St. Edward improved to 8-1 overall, 1-1 in the SCC Gold.

  • Inspired Montini surprises Marian Central Nov 10, 2012 12:00 AM
A much greater loss than one earlier this season gave Montini some extra inspiration for Saturday night's Class 5A football quarterfinal rematch at unbeaten Marian Central. Last Sunday Montini sophomore football player Johnny Weiger lost a battle with leukemia that began a year ago. One of the posters hanging from the front of the visitors' stands at George Harding Field said, "Johnny Always Wins." And for the fourth straight year, Montini didn't lose when it faced Marian in the postseason as the three-time defending 5A champions overcame an early 14-point deficit for a 42-27 victory.

  • Swenson, Wauconda make the most of playoff appearance Oct 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Austin Swenson was twisting, turning, kicking and doing just about anything he could to get back in at quarterback for Wauconda on Friday night. Swenson had played a big part in helping the underdog Bulldogs hang with unbeaten Marian Central in their Class 5A football playoff opener at George Harding Field. Then, a hit near the end of the first half led to spasms that shot up the senior's back and sidelined him for his team's first offensive series of the second half. But there was no way Swenson was going to miss any more time even though the second-seeded Hurricanes (10-0) and explosive quarterback Chris Streveler were pulling away to a deceptive 42-10 victory. Swenson hung in there the rest of the way and completed 19 of 38 passes for 293 yards.

St. Edward football coach Mike Rolando knew Friday’s game against Marian Central was going to be a tough task. He was right. • Marmion can’t keep up with Marian Sep 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Marmion figured it would need a high-scoring game if it was going to upset the powerful offense of Marian during Friday's Suburban Christian Conference clash in Aurora. The Cadets were able to move the chains at times on Friday, but only found the end zone early in the first quarter, while the Hurricanes, led by standout quarterback Chris Streveler, tore through the Cadets defense for a 34-7 victory.
