  • Defense lets Hampshire down in dome loss Mar 24, 2015 8:37 PM
After a doubleheader sweep of Round Lake on Saturday, Hampshire softball coach Stacey Stepek was glowing about her team’s defense. But on Tuesday, that solid defense didn’t make the trip to Rosemont with the Whip-Purs. Two key errors in the fifth inning opened the floodgates for Marian Central to score 4 unearned runs on its way to a 9-4 win over Hampshire at The Dome at the Ballpark.

After clinching the regional title Thursday, Woodstock High School's girls basketball team posed for a picture with a Barbie doll — their symbol of “girl power” — stuck on a crucifix at a Catholic school. The image shows the girls pointing at the cross, hanging at Marian Central Catholic High School. “Both administrations are trying to work through this incident,” Marian Central Athletic Director Drew Potthoff said Saturday.

  • Marian Central takes one away from Carmel Feb 13, 2015 11:28 PM
Carmel was in line for a hard-earned East Suburban Catholic Conference boys basketball victory, with possession of the ball and a 5-point lead in the final 50 seconds Friday night. Instead, the Corsairs saw their effort go unrewarded as Marian Central Catholic scored 7 of the final 8 points to pull out a 73-72 victory on Wyatt Lindell’s 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in Woodstock.

  • 2014-2015 Fox Valley Leadership Team Jan 7, 2015 2:59 PM
The 10 students named to the Daily Herald's Fox Valley Leadership Team come from different backgrounds, but they have one thing in common -- they value service over self. "Everything I need to know about life I have learned through service," writes Cassie Kemmler of Elgin Academy. Read about these future leaders -- kids who are "doers, not just joiners," according to a sponsor -- and prepare to be inspired.

  • Marian Central stops Elgin’s streak Jan 3, 2015 5:59 PM
After coming off a consolation championship and riding a three-game win streak to end 2014, the Elgin boys basketball team looked to build upon that momentum into the New Year. Unfortunately the Maroons ran into the bigs of Marian Central Catholic and took a 73-58 loss at Chesbrough Fieldhouse in Elgin on Saturday afternoon.

  • Bartlett nips Marian Central Dec 26, 2014 10:02 PM
For the third time in the Hinkle Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament at Jacobs, Bartlett had to battle from behind in the opening game of the Consolation B bracket against Marian Central on Friday. Hawks’ leader Ryan DiCanio sat most of the first half due to early foul trouble while the Hurricanes’ Adam Pischke shot lights out, but a 23-point effort by Robby Jimenez (5 rebounds) allowed Bartlett to rally for a 57-55 victory.

  • Larkin legs out win over Marian Central Dec 23, 2014 10:29 PM
One of the decisions Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter pondered prior to the Royals’ 85-73 win at the Hinkle Holiday Classic Tuesday was to figure out whether or not to allow Marian Central’s dynamic guard Adam Pischke to go off in the scoring column and clamp down on every other Hurricane in the process.

  • Huntley falters late against Marian Central Dec 20, 2014 11:41 PM
It was a fourth quarter to remember for Marian Central. It was one to forget for Huntley. • Rosary goes down fighting in sectional semifinals Nov 4, 2014 11:21 PM
It looked pretty grim for Rosary after the opening game against Marian Central Catholic. “We all went back to the huddle after the first set and looked each other in the eye,” Rosary libero extraordinaire Martha Konovodoff said. “We all said, ‘It’s (the season) not going to end that easy.’” The Royals were an entirely different team in the second set, staving off 5 match points in the first semifinal of the Class 3A Rochelle girls volleyball sectional on Tuesday night. Rosary would score the final 3 points of the second set to force a decisive third game, but Marian — the Royals’ longtime former conference rival — had too much size on the interior for the Royals.

  • It’s on to the supersectional for St. Viator Nov 1, 2014 5:13 PM
One by one, St. Viator has sent home those with higher postseason seeds in the Grayslake Central sectional. The trend continued Saturday morning, as the Lions met Marian Central Catholic — a club that had beaten St. Viator in conference play and thus earned a higher seed at No. 2. The No. 5 seed Lions (20-5-1) taught the Hurricanes a harsh lesson in revenge, scoring twice after intermission, and dominating the proceedings on the turf at Eiserman Stadium in Grayslake to earn a 2-0 victory. That puts St. Viator in in Tuesday’s Class 2A supersectional at Stevenson against Chicago Public League foe Foreman.

  • Marian Central stops Grayslake North’s playoff run Oct 29, 2014 11:01 PM
It was only the second time Grayslake North’s boys soccer program was appearing in a sectional game. The Knights would have preferred a different outcome Wednesday as they came up short in spite of a gallant effort. Third-seeded Grayslake North fell to No. 2 Marian Central Catholic 2-0 in the Class 2A Grayslake Central semifinal on Wednesday night.

  • Carmel takes control against Marian Central Oct 18, 2014 12:01 AM
An even-keel contest blew wide open in the second quarter. Yet, it wasn’t the Hurricanes benefitting from an offensive storm. Carmel took advantage of short field situations with three unanswered scoring drives to cap the first half en route to a 42-14 takedown of visiting Marian Central in East Suburban Catholic action at Baker Stadium.

  • Lesson learned, St. Viator bounces back Oct 11, 2014 12:30 AM
Sometimes it is not a moment on the field that defines a team’s season, but instead a moment outside the lines. St. Viator’s football team believes it experienced such a moment before its 49-32-homecoming victory over Marian Central on Friday night. After a difficult week of practice, St. Viator (4-3, 3-2) had a team meeting on Thursday to discuss bigger-picture issues. Coach Brandon New said the meeting talked about how football is not about wins and losses, but about teaching the lessons to win in life.

  • Splitt, Cary-Grove hold off Marian Central Sep 9, 2014 10:05 PM
Ali Splitt’s 2013 season was certainly one to forget. Riddled by an ankle injury, Splitt missed most of her sophomore season. Now injury-free, Splitt gives Cary-Grove’s high-octane offense another solid hitting option. With 8 kills, 4 blocks and 3 aces, Splitt’s efforts propelled the Trojans to a hard-fought 25-19, 24-26, 25-18 win over upset-minded Marian Central in nonconference action in Cary Tuesday night.
