    It was a battle of the bats Friday at Wheaton Academy in a Suburban Christian Gold battle between the Warriors and Marian Central. Thanks to a key hit in the bottom of the seventh and a wild pitch, Wheaton Academy stayed undefeated with an 11-10 victory to advance to 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in the SCC Gold.

    Marian Central boys basketball coach Curtis Price realized his defensive game plan had to be focused on stopping Hampshire standout senior guard Ryan Cork. Good plan. Guarded primarily by 5-foot-8 senior guard Derreck Caldez, Cork managed only 7 points, 2 in the first half as the third-seeded Hurricanes knocked off second-seeded Hampshire 62-61 in semifinal action of the Class 3A Woodstock regional Tuesday night.

    Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle and Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts expressed surprise for different reasons when seeds for the upcoming Class 4A Elgin boys basketball sectional were released on the IHSA website Thursday afternoon. Cary-Grove (15-10, 7-4) was named the No. 1 seed at the Crystal Lake Central regional, followed by Fox Valley Conference Valley Division brethren Prairie Ridge (15-10, 6-5), Jacobs (13-12, 7-3), Crystal Lake South (14-10, 3-7) and Dundee-Crown (6-16, 2-8). Crystal Lake Central (3-21, 2-8 FVC Fox) is the No. 6 seed.

    A couple of minutes into its game with Marian Central, St. Edward led 5-4, and life was good. But that was about as good as it got for the Green Wave Friday night. After Joe French’s 3-pointer gave them the early lead, the shots stopped falling. The Hurricanes scored the next 15 points and eventually coasted to a 60-44 Suburban Christian Gold boys basketball win in Woodstock.

    Warren impresses with winning responses Jan 25, 2014 12:00 AM
    Warren wrestling coach Jim Ouimette was concerned about how his team was going to respond after suffering a tough 31-28 North Suburban Conference loss to Mundelein on Friday night. But the host Blue Devils did not let their coach down as they rolled to a 49-18 nonconference victory over Marian Central in the first round Saturday. They ended up going 3-0 in a triple dual that also included Grayslake Central, McHenry and Marian Central.

    Danny Favela originally wasnít excited about coming off the bench for the St. Edward boys basketball team. The junior has begun to enjoy it. Favela scored 16 points and had 9 rebounds Friday night to help the Green Wave to a 56-48 Suburban Christian victory over Marian Central in Elgin.

    A happy medium. Montiniís looking for it. The boys basketball team on Friday had its high scoring game this season. It also gave up the most, losing to Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division foe Marian Central 78-67.

    Justin Busch dreams all the time about winning a game in the last second. He had his opportunity Saturday and didnít disappoint. The Bartlett senior guard delivered 1 of 2 free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Hawks a hard-fought 59-58 win over Marian Central in opening-round play of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs High School.

    The students named to the Daily Herald Leadership Team sometimes amaze even those who know them best. "I have never seen a student do what Sally did last year ... (she) organized an entire school and literally an entire community to hold a Relay For Life," writes Jonathan Young, a counselor at Central High School on behalf of his nominee, Sally Heyob. The 39 members of the 2013-14 Fox Valley Leadership team, both winners and honorable mentions, have that kind of drive in common.

    One of the advantages of a one-sided basketball game is the chance for a coach to give playing time to players who might not see action in a close game. The outcome of Mondayís game in Mundelein essentially decided after the first quarter as unbeaten Carmel Catholic raced to a 22-3 lead over visiting Marian Central. So in the final quarter of this 74-35 romp, both sophomore Emily Casale and senior guard Alexa Svoboda saw extended playing time. Casale grabbed 5 rebounds in the final quarter alone. Svoboda showed off some good moves around the hoop and finished with 8 points.

    Ben Schnepf was in the right place at the right time. Schnepfís tip-in as time expired gave Marian Central an exhilarating 57-55 win over Cary-Grove in third round action of the Hoops for Healing boys basketball tournament held at Woodstock North Friday afternoon.

    Montini wide receiver Leon Thornton III knew his defensive teammates were ready to atone for their toughest outing of the season. Just one month ago, the Broncos gave up a season-high 35 points but held on to be beat Suburban Christian Blue rival Marian Central by five. Now they were meeting again Saturday night in a Class 5A second-round playoff football game at George Harding Field in Woodstock. This time the Broncos’ starting defense gave up nothing. And in what they hope continues to be an annual rite of passage toward a state title, the four-time defending 5A champions won 40-7 to bounce Marian out of the postseason for the fifth straight season.
