    Prospect’s softball team started out its Mid-Suburban League schedule on Wednesday in Mt. Prospect with a 2-0 shutout over defending conference champion Barrington. Sophomore Delilah Malczewski (3-0) threw a 2-hitter with 4 strikeouts and no walks. She faced 23 batters and got 10 on ground outs.

    Elk Grove’s Peter Arbov hit a ball off his ankle harder than he hit the ball to center field. Both were painful, but the one to center hurt Maine West even more. Arbov’s bases-loaded single scored Adam O’Malley to break a 3-3 tie as the Grenadiers held on to beat Maine West 5-4 Thursday in Elk Grove.

    St. Viator’s softball team ran its record to 7-2 on Tuesday with a 6-3 triumph over visiting Prospect in Arlington Heights. The Lions staged a 4-run sixth-inning rally to pull out the win as senior Sam Hogan (5-2) picked up the win.

    The Mid-Suburban West ruled at the Barrington softball quad on Saturday. Host Barrington and fellow conference mate Schaumburg each won their games over McHenry and Lane Tech. The Fillies topped McHenry 7-2 in their first game as junior Keenan Dolezal (5-2) earned the win for the Fillies (5-2) with 5 strikeouts.

    York leadoff batter Angela Scalzitti can’t wait to play some softball outside this spring. “Outside it’s such a different atmosphere,” said the DePaul recruit who plays center field. “I’m so excited to get outside.” But inside hasn’t been so bad for Scalzitti and the Dukes. After a 4-1 loss to powerful Benet on Tuesday at the Rosemont Dome, the Dukes were back in the weather-friendly facility on Thursday where they swept a pair of games from Maine West, 13-3 (6 innings) and 13-2 (5 innings).

    St. Viator’s softball team went indoors to play on Monday. And its senior pitcher Samantha Hogan went into the record books. Hogan struck out a school-record 15 batters in an 8-0 shutout over Guerin Prep at The Dome in Rosemont. She also had a day to remember at the plate, clubbing a home run and double with 2 RBI. Hogan finished with a 2-hitter as the Lions improved to 4-1 overall.

    Maine West took Loyola, one of the top ranked teams in the state, to the brink of elimination Friday night. The Warriors scored at the buzzer in regulation to send the regional final game into overtime, but ran out of gas in extra stanza.No. 1 seeded Loyola scored the first 8 points in OT to hold off No. 9 Maine West 70-64 to win the regional crown in Des Plaines on the Warriors’ home court.

  • Dones, Maine West step upMar 4, 2014 12:00 AM
    Senior Anthony Dones and his Maine West teammates faced a season-changing moment midway through the third quarter of Tuesday’s regional semifinal in Des Plaines. Thanks to a 21-6 run to start the second half by Lincoln Park, the Warriors’ big halftime lead was gone, and so was the momentum as West trailed by 5. Then after a timeout, Dones hit possibly the two biggest shots of his career. Both times with a hand in his face, the senior nailed two long 3-pointers to give West the advantage as the Warriors took a 57-56 lead over stunned Lincoln Park. West went on to a 79-77 victory as they held off a late Lincoln Park rally to survive.
