    It’s the dream every hockey player fantasizes about — scoring the championship game-winning goal in overtime — ever since they first lace up a pair of ice skates. That dream became reality for junior forward Sam Weiss on Sunday night at the United Center, in front of about 7,000 fans, as co-op Glenbard defeated Maine 4-3 in overtime to win the Illinois High School State Championship (Combined Division). Weiss’ goal came with 2:46 remaining in overtime, barely slipping past Maine sophomore goalie John Flynn (29 saves) and inching over the goal line.

    Barrington’s softball team advanced to the championship of its own Spring Fling tournament with a 4-0 shutout over Zion-Benton on Tuesday. The Fillies (2-0) will face defending Class 4A state champion Warren (2-0) for the title of the eight-team tourney Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

    After a two-year absence due to adverse weather, Barrington’s Spring Fling was back in business on Monday with temperatures in the 70s. And the host Fillies were all business, too. Loyola recruit Keenan Dolezal struck out 11 while throwing a 2-hitter in the Fillies’ 10-0 five-inning victory over Deerfield in the quarterfinals of the eight-team softball tourney. The offensive star was junior second baseman Kelly Katis, who went 3-for-3 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI. Teammate Rachel Krzysko also doubled and drove in the final run of the game.

    Today, nearly five decades after Maine West's spectator gym opened, school district officials are planning to expand again, with a $9.8 million, 23,000-square-foot athletic building addition that will bring the school's weight room, wrestling room and locker rooms out of the basement, where they’ve been since the school’s opening. The school board approved a construction contract with Happ Builders at a special meeting at 7 a.m. today.

    Maine Township High School District 207 officials have received six bids from contractors for a proposed $10 million project to expand the gymnasium at Maine West in Des Plaines. A vote to approve a contract could come as early as Monday's school board meeting, but it's likely approval will be delayed since district officials say they are still reviewing the bids.

    Bobby Alexander and his coaches at Conant had it all planned out in their atttempt at a 138-pound wrestling state championship. But Anthony Cheloni of Marmion Academy had a similar plan, and it turned out his carried the day. On Friday night, the talented sophomore dashed Alexander’s title dream with a hard-fought 3-0 victory in the semifinals, sending the Cougars standout into wrestlebacks. Alexander certainly made the best of things. On Saturday afternoon, he led six Mid-Suburban League medalists by claiming a third-place finish to cap a sensational four-year career.

    How did the Mid-Suburban East’s top boys swimming teams stack up at the Glenbrook North sectional on Saturday afternoon? In historically strong fashion, that’s how. With winners in 5 of the 8 individual swimming events, those East teams showed they certainly belonged in a field led by meet champion New Trier (287 points) and Glenbrook North (181.5). Rolling Meadows added to its memorable season by finishing third with 157 points, 1 point better than Loyola, and breaking all kinds of new ground along the way. Rolling Meadows, Prospect, Hersey and Elk Grove each had event winners, and Wheeling advanced a pair of relays to next weekend's state meet.
