After a five-month investigation of hazing at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, the Cook County state's attorney's office Wednesday charged former Maine West High School head varsity soccer coach Michael Divincenzo while dropping charges against six juveniles. "He allowed these things to happen and encouraged it," Anita Alvarez said.

Fremd junior Angela Wu is in prime position for a run at the badminton singles championship, and the Vikings are also in the thick of the team state championship hunt after day one of the state tournament Friday in Charleston. Wu, a two-time Mid-Suburban League champion, rolled past all of her first three opponents in two games to earn a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals against Emma Adcock of Hinsdale South. Fremd was in second place in the team standings with 9.5 points, trailing Thornton Fractional South by 1.5 points and ahead of third-place Downers Grove North and Naperville Central by a half point.

Fremd's softball team remained right on the heels of first-place Barrington with a 10-3 victory at Schaumburg. Senior ace Ashlynne Schwantz (17-3) won her 14th straight game with 1 strikeout and 1 walk as the Vikings improved to 13-1, 1 game behind Barrington in the competitive Mid-Suburban West. The game was tied at 3-3 after four innings when Fremd (18-6) scored 3 times in the fifth and added 4 more in the seventh.

District 207 settles former orchestra teacher's lawsuit May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Maine Township High School District 207 has reached a deal with a former Maine West High School orchestra teacher to drop his federal lawsuit against the school board claiming he was fired because of his gender. Without admitting to any wrongdoing, the district will pay $10,000 to Andrew Ladendorf for agreeing to dismiss the lawsuit.

Northwest suburban students earn Merit Scholar awards May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Eleven Northwest suburban high school students have been chosen from among of 15,000 outstanding students nationwide for the prestigious Merit Scholar designation, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced. The 11 are among 2,500 scholars from across the country to earn the distinction, as well as a $2,500 scholarship, through the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Maine West Golden Apple winner puts students first May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
The murals on the walls of Maine West High School bear witness to Gregory Regalado's contribution to the Des Plaines school's art program. Those contributions, along with many others, were rewarded Wednesday when Regalado was surprised in his classroom with the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching, bestowed on only 10 teachers statewide. "I would venture to say that he's impacted every department of the school," said Mike Smith, the Maine West mathematics teacher who nominated Regalado for the coveted award.

Senior Ashlynne Schwantz and sophomore Joanna Josten combined for a 12-1 Mid-Suburban League victory over host Hoffman Estates in five innings. Winning pitcher Schwantz (9-3) struck out three in the first two innings and Josten recorded 4 strikeouts in the final three innings. Leigh Farina and Tracy Welninski had homers for Fremd (10-6, 5-1) while Mandi Matsumoto tripled. Teammates Kristine Herdegen and Michelle Mazur each doubled and freshman Alysia Garcia was 2-for-3.

Five-homer day powers Barrington into school record book Apr 27, 2013 12:00 AM
Barrington's bats belted their way into school softball history on Saturday at the Fields of Dreams. While sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Libertyville 11-1 and 12-4, the Fillies slugged five more home runs and now have 33 for the season, breaking the former mark of 30 set by the 2007 team that finished second in the Class AA state tourney. Fittingly enough, it was senior third baseman Loren Krzysko's 3-run blast in the second inning of Game 1 that set the record. The Arkansas-bound Krzysko (3-for-3, 2 homers, triple, 5 RBI) is also the school's all-time homer run leader with 35.

Trailing 6-0 after three innings, Buffalo Grove's softball team chipped away at the deficit and scored its final 3 runs in the top of the seventh to post an 8-6 victory over host Schaumburg. The big comeback allowed the Bison (10-5, 4-2) to retain first place in the Mid-Suburban East as they improved to 10-5 and 5-2 despite being outhit 14-8. Sophomore Julia Camardo (8-4) earned the win and also went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Sophomore Julia Camardo got a win, a save and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double to help lift Buffalo Grove's softball team to its third straight win in the Mid-Suburban East on Wednesday. The first-place Bison (8-5, 3-2) collected 15 hits as Camardo (6-3) started the game, was replaced by a reliever, and came back to strike out the final batter in the bottom of the seventh as Meadows threatened. Camardo finished with 13 strikeouts.

Back to the place where he cut his coaching teeth, first-year head coach Jeff Bishop enjoyed a homecoming of sorts after watching his team from Maine West roll over Maine East 6-0 on a cold, rainy Tuesday afternoon in Park Ridge. The visiting Warriors (4-7-1) shrugged off a slow start and stormed into the lead with consecutive goals from Alice Faraone. Maine West used another by Alexia Prosperi at the half-hour to put away its crosstown rival for good.

Tori Walzak's two-out double scored Lauren Logan in the top of the eighth inning and that proved to be the difference for Palatine's softball team which edged host Conant 4-3 on Monday in Hoffman Estates. After a leadoff single by Elisa Ambrose in the bottom of the eighth, Pirates senior ace Megan Hedstrom retired the next three batters, including a strikeout to end the game.Palatine improved to 6-4 and 2-0 in the Mid-Suburban West while Conant is 6-3 and 2-1.

The area’s top home-run hitting softball team didn’t have a hit leave the park on Tuesday. But Barrington did leave the field with 13 hits and another win. Keenan Dolezal threw a 5-hitter as the Fillies posted an 8-1 victory over defending Mid-Suburban League East champion Elk Grove at the Fields of Dreams.
