    Every great program has people working behind the scenes who prove invaluable to its success. For the Maine West girls basketball program and its Hall of Fame coach Derril Kipp one of those people is Mary Dankowski. That is the reason the Illinois High School basketball Coaches Asscociation will induct her into its Hall of Fame on May 2 at Illinois State as part of the Friends of Basketball category.

    Bobby Alexander and his coaches at Conant had it all planned out in their atttempt at a 138-pound wrestling state championship. But Anthony Cheloni of Marmion Academy had a similar plan, and it turned out his carried the day. On Friday night, the talented sophomore dashed Alexander’s title dream with a hard-fought 3-0 victory in the semifinals, sending the Cougars standout into wrestlebacks. Alexander certainly made the best of things. On Saturday afternoon, he led six Mid-Suburban League medalists by claiming a third-place finish to cap a sensational four-year career.

    How did the Mid-Suburban East’s top boys swimming teams stack up at the Glenbrook North sectional on Saturday afternoon? In historically strong fashion, that’s how. With winners in 5 of the 8 individual swimming events, those East teams showed they certainly belonged in a field led by meet champion New Trier (287 points) and Glenbrook North (181.5). Rolling Meadows added to its memorable season by finishing third with 157 points, 1 point better than Loyola, and breaking all kinds of new ground along the way. Rolling Meadows, Prospect, Hersey and Elk Grove each had event winners, and Wheeling advanced a pair of relays to next weekend's state meet.

    Hersey’s boys basketball team finished off a 9-1 effort against Mid-Suburban East foes with a 57-47 victory over Wheeling on Friday. Payton Haas led the Huskies with 19 points, Zak Cooper had 14 and Joey Coffaro had 9.

In addition to the aforementioned medal hopefuls, emphatic victories from Maine West’s Joey Vogeney and Conant’s Dan Andress signaled the beginning of what could be a memorable weekend for both.

    Wheeling junior forward Dylan Draka scored 21 points and teammate Jalen Dennis had 14, including a floater in the lane as time ran out to send Tuesday’s nonconference boys basketball matchup against visiting Wheeling into overtime. The Wildcats took control in the extra session, outscoring the Warriors 15-8 in an 84-77 victory.

    Less than 24 hours after clinching a berth in the Mid-Suburban League boys basketball championship game, Hersey was back on the road Saturday. And it was a winning path again as they traveled to Des Plaines to win the nonconference matchup 47-46 over Maine West. Payton Haas hit a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to boost the Huskies (16-8) into the lead. He finished with a team-high 17 points.

    Maine West’s girls basketball team played its final regular-season game on Friday night in Park Ridge. Liz Sanchez hardly gave a regular performance for a varsity call-up in only her second game.The 5-foot-5 sophomore guard entered a tight game in the second quarter and helped turn the tide in Warriors’ favor by hitting three 3-pointers in a span of five minutes. The long distance show helped the West turn a 3-point deficit into a 13-point lead and they never trailed again in a 54-42 triumph before a big crowd at Maine East which was hosting a boys-girls doubleheader.

    Prospect senior Kyle Beyak shot 8-for-10 from 2-point range and 2-for-5 from beyond the arc on his way to a game-high 26 points as the visiting Knights topped Wheeling 75-58 on Friday in Mid-Suburban East boys basketball. Sophomore guard Frankie Mack shot 5-for-6 from 3-point range and finished with 20 points and a team-best 9 rebounds for the Knights (11-10, 5-4).

    Playing her final home game of a standout four-year girls basketball career at Wheeling High School, Deanna Kuzmanic put up one of the finest performances. The Alabama-Birmingham recruit scored a season-high 35 points with 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals as the Wildcats raced past visiting Barrington 56-30 in the Mid-Suburban League crossover on Tuesday night. “It was quite a game,” said Wheeling coach Matt Weber who has had quite a first season directing the Wildcats to 20 wins. “It was the best individual performance I’ve seen this year and last year as an assistant.”

    Playing on the big stage at the Robert Morris University campus in Arlington Heights, Wheeling got some big free throws by senior Hailey Dammeier and was able to seal a 55-52 win over Buffalo Grove on Saturday.The game was part of District 214’s Centennial Classic at the Forest View Education Center in Arlington Heights where all three Mid-Suburban East girls and boys games were played in succession.

    Twenty six in a row. That’s the Mid-Suburban West winning streak the Fremd girls basketball team will carry into the 2015-16 season after completing a 10-0 run for the second straight season on Friday night. Haley Gorecki (18 points), Bryana Hopkins (13), Briana Lewis (12) and Julia Wacker (10) all reached double figures in the state-ranked Vikings’ 68-33 triumph over visiting Palatine. Fremd (22-4) has not lost a MSL West game since Schaumburg defeated the Vikings 46-37 three years ago.

     
  • Regional triumphs for Conant, Prospect Feb 7, 2015 9:53 PM
    Mid-Suburban League wrestling champ Conant prevailed in the team race with 241.5 points, ahead of runners-up Rolling Meadows and Schaumburg, who tied with 146 in the Class 3A regional field at Lake Park on Saturday.
