    Elk Grove senior guard Dan Hadler had been having a rough go on the court lately. Saturday night at Maine West, things became better. Hadler led the Grenadiers with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to lead Elk Grove to a 61-39 win in a nonconference boys basketball tilt.

  • Fremd salutes seniors, secures MSL West tie Jan 31, 2015 1:00 AM
    Senior night was a big success for Fremd’s state-ranked girls basketball team as the Vikings clinched at least a tie for its sixth straight Mid-Suburban League West championship. Fremd improved to 20-4 and 8-0 with a 58-37 victory over visiting Schaumburg.

    Hersey’s girls basketball team played back-to-back games for the third consecutive weekend when it traveled to Cary on Saturday afternoon. Coming off a victory over her alma mater (Rolling Meadows) on Friday night, Huskies coach Mary Fendley watched her team pick up its 17th win of the season less than 24 hours later. Led by Claire Gritt (17 points, 6 steals, 5 assists), Juliette Vainisi (9 points), Gina Miklasz (7 points), Kelly Weyhrich (6 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds) and Maggie Berigan (6 rebounds, 9 blocks), the Huskies (17-5) prevailed 50-29 over the Trojans.

    The Rolling Meadows boys basketball team notched its second win of the season over Wheeling with a 70-57 win in a Mid-Suburban East test Saturday. The visiting Mustangs, who won the first meeting 66-60 after trailing by 18 points in the third quarter, improved to 9-9 and 4-2 in the East while Wheeling slipped to 4-14 and 1-5. Matt Wojcik led the Mustang with 20 points, followed by sophomore Jared Murphy (19) and classmate Jack Schoessling (15).

     
  • Blackwell comes up big as Schaumburg bounces Palatine Jan 24, 2015 12:29 AM
    Schaumburg senior Jada Blackwell scored 9 of her team-high 13 points in overtime as the Saxons pulled out a 40-37 girls basketball victory over visiting Palatine in Mid-Suburban West play on Friday. Blackwell had a big 3-pointer in the extra session along with 4 free throws and a basket while classmate Brittany Reinhart also made a free throw as the hosts outscored the Pirates 10-7 in the extra four minutes.

     
  • Korff keeps connecting as Hersey wins again Jan 18, 2015 12:40 AM
    Hersey’s newest sharpshooter was at it again on Saturday afternoon at the Glenbrook South dome in Glenview. Annie Korff had three 3-pointers through Hersey’s first 18 girls basketball games. But in the last two she has four. The senior guard had two on Friday night and tossed in two more in the first half of Saturday’s 48-37 win over the host Titans while scoring a game-high 17 points.

     
  • Mickey, Rolling Meadows muster up a big win Jan 17, 2015 12:50 AM
    Hannah Mickey scored a career-high 19 points to help the Rolling Meadows girl basketball team get past visiting Buffalo Grove 51-37 on Friday night. The junior forward had 9 field goals, at least two in every quarter as the Mustangs improved to 14-5 and 2-3 in the Mid-Suburban East.

For the 25th year, he is putting on the McDonald’s Shootout Chicagoland Girls Prep Classic, and this year's event includes Fremd, Prospect and Maine West.

    Lake Zurich senior forward Elly Daleske called it about a one-hour drive for her girls basketball team to arrive at Maine West High School for Tuesday’s nonconference girls basketball game. Once in Des Plaines, it was Daleske’s turn to drive — to the basket. And she made it pay off by getting fouled and sinking 6-of-7 free throws en route to a team-high 12 points which helped the Bears to a 46-36 victory over the host Warriors.

    What a difference 24 hours can make for Maine West. On Friday night just before tip off, the Warriors had just one victory. By Saturday night at the same time, Maine West had 3 wins. After equaling their season win total with a win over Maine East on Friday, Maine West doubled its pleasure by holding off Rolling Meadows 53-50 Saturday in Des Plaines.

     
  • St. Charles East on schedule, wins at Maine West Jan 10, 2015 8:20 PM
    If St. Charles East hopes to repeat as Upstate Eight champs in a couple of weeks, it’s important that Jason Potter’s club is at full strength and in form when his Saints go to host Geneva to defend their crown. Consider that plan very much on track. On Saturday afternoon in Des Plaines, the Saints showed they are well equipped to lift another conference trophy by sweeping all three of their duals at Maine West, including an opener with Northern Illinois power DeKalb (14-4-0) with a thrilling 32-29 comeback victory. The Saints later bounced both Rolling Meadows (13-4-0) and the host Warriors to run their overall record to 13-4-0.

    Maine West’s girls basketball team improved to 4-1 in the Central Suburban North with a 42-38 victory over visiting Maine East on Friday night in Des Plaines.Junior Kayla Pociejewski, freshman Catherine Johnson and freshman Jessica Riedl each scored 8 points while freshman Allison Pearson added 6 for the Warriors, who received 3-point baskets from junior Jordan Hart and Johnson.

    Anthony Dones scored a game-high 15 points and Matt Acevedo had 13 as Maine West snapped a 10-game losing streak and picked up a Central Suburban North victory by defeating Maine East 42-37 on Friday in Des Plaines.

  • Maine West easily passing the generosity test Jan 5, 2015 5:43 PM
    During the holiday season, Maine West’s girls basketball team has surely been in the giving spirit. This past Saturday, the varsity girls took the opportunity to fund raise through a bake sale and raffle at its annual 16-team junior varsity tournament won by Fremd followed by Geneva, Schaumburg and Maine West. The proceeds are going toward offsetting some team expenses, fundraising for a Lake Forest High School coach (three of his five children have serious medical conditions, two have cancer and one has to have heart surgeries throughout her life) and to raise funds for a youth cancer foundation (yet to be determined).

    Barrington’s girls basketball team earned its first win in the Dundee-Crown Charger Classic on Monday with a 35-32 triumph over Naperville Central. Trailing 19-11 at the break, coach Babbi Barreiro’s Fillies came up with a strong second-half performance, limiting the Redhawks to 13 points in the consolation-bracket game.

    Playing for the first time this season without its two senior co-captains, Hersey’s girls basketball team found a way to pull out a 49-37 victory over Lyons Township in the fifth-place game of the 31st annual Bill Neibch Falcon Holiday Girls Basketball Classic at Wheaton North High School on Saturday afternoon.
