    Maine Township trustees are expected to consider appointing a successor to longtime Assessor Tom Rueckert, who died Tuesday at age 73, at their next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at township hall, 1700 Ballard Road in Park Ridge. Township spokesman Dick Barton said the law requires any appointee to be state certified to be an assessor and of the same political party as the person being replaced — in this case, Republican.

    Maine Township’s assessor of the past 29 years, Thomas E. Rueckert, died Tuesday at the age of 73 after a long battle with lung disease. First elected township assessor in 1985, Rueckert had previously served as president of the Maine Township High School District 207 board of education and chairman of the Oakton College Law Enforcement Advisory Committee.

    Maine Township officials are encouraging residents to collect aluminum cans and bring them to a recycling event later this year, with proceeds to benefit the Maine Township Food Pantry. A “cash for cans” event in September will support the pantry, which, in addition to the regular food donations it receives, also relies on financial contributions in order to purchase more food.

    Jarrett Payton will kick off a series of Maine Township-sponsored programs about bullying on March 12 with a lecture at Maine West High School. He will be joined by Camille Paddock, a 15-year-old who was bullied at age 9 due to hair loss from an autoimmune disease. She founded a nonprofit organization, Cam’s Dare to Be Different.

  • Maine East students win video contest promoting teen voting Feb 4, 2014 4:17 PM
    Maine East High School students Andrea Garneata and Veronica Malesinski won a video contest sponsored by the Cook County Clerk to draw attention to the change in the law allowing 17-year-olds who will be 18 by the November 2014 general election to register and vote in the March 18 primary. “Veronica and Andrea produced a wonderful video that conveys the excitement 17-year-olds have about getting to vote,” Cook County Clerk David Orr said in a news release.
