  • Gillespie, Deere help Warren stay hot vs. Maine S. Jan 14, 2014 10:43 PM
When rising Warren star Eric Gillespie hit one of those NBA-range 3-pointers midway through the second quarter on Tuesday night, Maine South coach Tony Lavorato, Jr. had seen enough. He called timeout and did some major league screaming at his Hawks. “I just wanted them to play like the good team they are,’’ Lavorato said. His high-volume speech got through as Warren (10-6) never scored again before halftime. In a back-and-forth game at Warren, the streaking Blue Devils won their fifth game in a row, 48-43, and dealt just the third loss of the season to the visiting Hawks.

  • Way has her say as Stevenson handles Maine S. Dec 26, 2013 6:57 PM
In the season of giving, Sophia Way might have been giving too much. Of herself. So Stevenson coach Tom Dineen had a talk with his veteran junior before the Patriots’ game against Mundelein last week. “She’s been trying to do a little too much,” Dineen said. “I told her, ‘Just go play. Have fun. It’s high school basketball.’ She was trying to be the assistant coach, the cheerleader, the team mom, the captain.” In Stevenson’s first contest in Dundee-Crown’s Charger Classic since 2006, Way was the game’s leading scorer and best player on the floor. The sweet-shooting guard dropped in 13 of her 23 points in the opening quarter, as the Patriots bolted to an early lead and never trailed, pulling away for a 68-46 win over Maine South on Thursday.

But it couldn’t have been as hard it has been for opponents trying to stop the 6-foot forward from scoring points the last four seasons. Her 15 points in Tuesday night’s Central Suburban League crossover in Park Ridge placed Collins in the No. 1 spot in school history for career points. She now has 1,653, breaking the mark of 1,648 set by Megan Edwards in 2005.
