Verber’s impact was widespread in high school sports Feb 4, 2013 12:00 AM
There are not many coaches from the Chicago suburbs who can say they were part of an IHSA state basketball championship team. But that's what happened for George Verber as an assistant to Maine South coach Quitman Sullins when the Hawks won the 1979 Class AA state title. Verber, who died from leukemia on Jan. 22, went on to become the head coach at Maine West for three seasons and led the Warriors to a conference championship in the 1981-82 season. That was the same year Derril Kipp took over the girls basketball program at Maine West. "He helped teach our kids the 1-3-1 defense we used in 1985 when we beat Maine South to go downstate," said Kipp, a Hall of Fame coach. "Maine South was No. 1 in state and we beat them in the Conant supersectional."

Maine S. denies Naperville C. title at Dundee-Crown Dec 29, 2012 12:00 AM
When Naperville Central’s Jamie Cuny nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Redhawks an 11-point lead that capped a 17-5 quarter, it only seemed inevitable that the Redhawks were about to capture their first Dundee-Crown Charger Classic girls basketball championship since they won back-to-back titles with Candace Parker in 2002-03. If anything, the Maine South looked dead in the water after it shot with a lid on its basket, going 2 for 11 in the third quarter with its first points in the second half coming with 1:40 remaining on a basket by Regan Carmichael. However, the lid made its way over to Naperville Central’s end and when Maine South threw in a trap as well midway through the fourth, all bets were off as the Hawks used a 15-4 fourth quarter to force overtime. In the extra session, Carmichael continued her onslaughtm scoring 15 of her career-high 27 points bridging the fourth and overtime to seal a 54-43 comeback win to as the Hawks claimed the D-C championship in their first appearance in the tourney Saturday night in Carpentersville.

Stempel’s sniping sends Stevenson into semis Dec 28, 2012 12:00 AM
The experience of playing in the 52nd annual Proviso West Holiday Tournament is one Stevenson senior Andy Stempel will likely never forget. His performance in Friday's quarterfinal against Maine South was one that the Hawks coach Tony Lavorato Jr. won't soon forget, either. In the fourth quarter and his team leading 44-41 with 2:07 left, Stempel took a perfect pass from teammate Matt Morrissey and drained a huge 3-pointer. It was the second such combination of pass and score from Morrissey to Stempel, and it proved to be enough to lift the Patriots into the semifinals in their inaugural visit to the tournament with a 54-51 win over Maine South. Stevenson will face Chicago Public League powerhouse Morgan Park in an 8 p.m. semifinal Saturday. Maine South will face Bogan in a consolation game a 3:45 p.m.
