    Students at Maine East High School who learned all about angles, shapes and theorems in geometry classes this year didn’t have to go far to apply those lessons in a real-world setting. A new two-story press box behind the Park Ridge school’s varsity baseball diamond is the result of a yearlong project by two Maine East geo-construction classes. “They’re getting their mind around real-world things," said teacher Tom Kaiser. "It’s not just naked math.”

    One of the biggest crowds to watch a Maine East girls basketball game turned out Friday night in Park Ridge. And it turned out to be a real celebration. The Blue Demons awarded their enthusiastic backers a historic win as they captured their first girls basketball conference championship in school history with a 48-44 victory over Maine West, which is coincidentally the conference’s queen of divisional crowns with 25.

     
  • Maine East students win video contest promoting teen voting Feb 4, 2014 4:17 PM
    Maine East High School students Andrea Garneata and Veronica Malesinski won a video contest sponsored by the Cook County Clerk to draw attention to the change in the law allowing 17-year-olds who will be 18 by the November 2014 general election to register and vote in the March 18 primary. “Veronica and Andrea produced a wonderful video that conveys the excitement 17-year-olds have about getting to vote,” Cook County Clerk David Orr said in a news release.

  • Maine West meets Maine East’s challenge Jan 10, 2014 11:55 PM
    First place was on the line in the Central Suburban North on Friday night in Des Plaines when Maine West hosted Maine East in girls basketball. The 26-time conference champion Warriors were playing a Blue Demons team that has never won a league crown but is off to its best start in 20 seasons. “I don’t think we were intimidated by that,” Warriors senior guard Erin Ross said of the Blue Demons’ 10-4 and 3-0 record entering the game. “If anything, it fueled us. We were intense and really wanted to win bad.” Ross sure helped fuel the Warriors, connecting for four 3-pointers, en route to a career high 16 points, as West pulled away in the second half to a 47-26 victory.

    Maine West rolled over an undermanned but spirited Maine East wrestling club Friday night in a Central Suburban League crosstown dual in the Demons’ historic fieldhouse. The visiting Warriors (5-2-0, 2-0-0) were fueled by a handful of forfeits and a trio of pins from Adeel Afshar, Kevin Mendoza and Joey Vogeny to record a 54-19 victory in advance of a trip to the 29th annual Wildcat Invite at Wheeling on Saturday. The field there features state power Sandburg, the reigning Class 3A state champion.

    Maine Township High School District 207 is abating $1,478,562 to taxpayers from tax proceeds collected in 2013. “We believe our financial management and cost-containment efforts have put us in a position that we can make this tax abatement without compromising the quality of our education,” Superintendent Ken Wallace said.

     
  • Dist. 207 planning $6 million of improvements at schools Dec 10, 2013 7:11 PM
    Maine Township High School District 207 officials are planning more than $6 million worth of facility improvement projects next summer at the district’s three schools as part of a 10-year capital plan. The work includes the installation of security cameras at all schools and the replacement of football stadium lights at Maine West and Maine East. “We’re starting to hear some themes, which is ‘replace’ (and) ‘50 years old’ on a lot of our equipment. Fifty years is a long time for some of this equipment,” said Mary Kalou, the district’s assistant superintendent for business.

    Maine Township High School District 207 Superintendent Ken Wallace has been at the helm of the district for more than four years, but perhaps it’s been the past 12 months that have been the most volatile. Wallace’s management of the district since a hazing scandal broke last fall — and the desire to ensure continuity in managing the fallout down the line — may have been one of the reasons school board members voted this week to give him a five-year contract extension.

     
  • State's attorney investigates Dist. 207's handling of ex-teacher's case Sep 16, 2013 11:06 AM
    The Cook County state's attorney's office is investigating whether Maine Township High School District 207 failed to properly notify the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services about a former teacher accused of inappropriate conduct toward students in 2007. The allegations involved Mark Krockover, a former tenured Maine East High School chemistry teacher and cheerleading coach, who was allowed to resign in August 2007 after being accused of sexual harassment by several current and former female students, according to district records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

     
  • Late strike lifts Maine East past Elk Grove Aug 27, 2013 10:23 PM
    Host Maine East spoiled the coaching debut of Rob Shepard with a late strike, topping visiting Elk Grove 4-3 in a Central Suburban/Mid-Suburban Soccer Challenge match in Park Ridge on Tuesday. Shepard, who follows longtime Elk Grove head coach Joe Bush, saw his team find the equalizer at the 66th minute but conceded the game-winner two minutes from time when Joe Swoboda fired in his second goal of the evening to give coach Vic DiPrizio’s squad the victory.
