    Maine East High School held their commencement ceremony on Monday, June 4th, at the Rosemont Theatre. 475 students are in the 2012 graduating class.

    Today, we introduce you to some amazing teenagers. The members of the 2011-12 Daily Herald Academic Team all have grades and test scores so stellar they could blind. But read past the test scores, and what you find are humble young people, dedicated to learning and intent on using education to further their goals.

    They have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society. "I look forward to someday being able to help those in need through the wonders of human ingenuity and medical technology -- on a scale I had never before thought possible," writes Antonio Spina, of Bartlett High School.

    Softball and food were two of Gloria Capek's favorite things. After the mother of five died of breast cancer in 1999, at age 64, her family created a charity softball tournament in her memory that includes a large buffet of food. Now in its 11th year, the event has raised more than $60,000 for local breast cancer charities. "She would have just absolutely loved this," said her daughter, Deb Boylan, 54 of Vernon Hills.
