Lyons Twp. advanced to the quarterfinals of the 38th Annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York with an 81-69 win over Waubonsie Valley's boys basketball team Tuesday in Elmhurst. The Lions will play Naperville North at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for a berth in the semifinals.

Down by 16 early with only one made basket in the first quarter, Lyons Township clawed back mightily to down Elk Grove 38-31 in Wheaton North’s holiday tournament Tuesday night. Elk Grove’s Diamond Boyd had as many points as the entire opposition did going into halftime — 13 points — but it was a tale of two halves as the Grenadiers let slip a big lead. The Lions held Elk Grove to 2 points in the third quarter to start their climb back but didn’t hold a lead in the game until the game’s closing moments.

When you win a girls gymnastics meet by 0.05 points, it takes your team’s best score and fourth-best score, as well as the two in between each of the four events, to pull out the victory. Glenbard West received key scores from Abbie Garchitorena, Shauna Gialluisi, Missy Guzman, Emma McCloskey, Mackenzie O’Keefe and Nicole Pagor to edge Lyons Twp. 140.30 to 140.25 during Wednesday’s West Suburban Silver meet in Glen Ellyn.

Charges expected soon in Indian Head Park girl’s stabbing Nov 3, 2011 12:00 AM
It appears charges may be filed soon in the stabbing death of 14-year-old Kelli O'Laughlin of Indian Head Park. She was killed last week after interrupting an apparent home burglary. Police are holding a "person of interest."

Lyons' comeback stuns Bartlett Oct 29, 2011 12:00 AM
It was a high-scoring night in the opening round of the Class 8A football playoffs, and the Bartlett Hawks were left stunned. The Lyons Township Lions defeated the Hawks 45-42 at Milennium Field in Streamwood Saturday night, coming back from a 25-point deficit and putting up 21 points in the fourth quarter for the unlikely come-from-behind win.

Third baseman Matt Brancato gave Schaumburg a big early spark with a first-inning home run to stake the Saxons to a 1-0 lead in Monday’s baseball regional final. But after that, it was all state-ranked Lyons Township — and pitcher Zach Remijas. Remijas stuck out nine Saxons in 6? innings, and top-seeded Lyons knocked out 12 hits en route to a 6-2 victory over host Schaumburg.
