Demand, Lakes strike again May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Justin Demand's final fastball popped leather, and moments later from beyond the fence in center field came more sounds that were pleasant to the ears of Lakes. Snap, crackle, pop, sizzle. Pretty. Pretty appropriate. Demand's 16-strikeout performance against Antioch last month was worthy of fireworks, and Friday the Lakes lefty got them. Which he earned again. After Demand pitched No. 2 Lakes to a 1-0 win over No. 3 Antioch in the teams' Class 3A Lakes regional semifinal, a small fireworks show briefly took place. "Perfect timing," Lakes coach Ray Gialo said. "Somebody must have been looking out for us, I guess."

Roll model: Lakes’ Felipez medals downstate May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Evelyn Felipez remembers the first time she laid eyes upon the track at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium. "It was breathtaking," she said of last weekend's girls state track meet. "It was huge. It was a crazy experience." Felipez said she was excited to be surrounded by athletes and see the stands filled with fans. But when the Lakes High School freshman wheeled herself to the starting post, there was one thought and one goal: win. She did, and in the process made history. In the first wheelchair races hosted by IHSA, Felipez took home two medals, first in the 100-meter and second in the 200-meter races.

Full-throated Fobbe puts it all together for Stevenson May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Stevenson senior Jordan Fobbe has added a lot to his shot put style over the last few weeks, and with everything he has added, the shot just keeps going farther. So in time for his first throw in the Class 3A shot put event in boys track and field state preliminaries at O'Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, Fobbe added a loud grunt that has become ever-so-popular among shot put throwers. Whether it actually adds distance to the outcome remains up for debate, this much isn't: it worked on Friday for Fobbe. His first throw in the prelims was the best he has ever thrown the shot. The loud grunt was accompanied by an equally loud thud as the shot landed 56 feet, 7 inches from the ring. Another personal best throw marked an improvement of 10 feet over the last two weeks and a spot in the finals with the second-best toss from prelims.

Chokshi, Grayslake Central outlast Lakes in shootout May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
After getting a glimpse of what was possible for Grayslake Central girls soccer team, goalkeeper Kajal Chokshi personally made sure that vision was realized Saturday. Chokshi made 3 penalty kick saves in the shootout, along with a couple of other key stops in the final 10 minutes of regulation."I felt like something was going to happen," said Chokshi who made 9 saves and recorded her ninth shutout of the season. "All the girls and these coaches believed that we could do it." That self-confidence helped third-seeded Grayslake Central get past No. 6 Lakes 1-0 (5-4 in a seven-round penalty kick shootout) in the Class 2A Grayslake Central regional final.

Sweet evening for Lakes at VH sectional May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Trevor Ray held a small bundle of gift-wrapped goodies baked by Stephanie Rowells, wife of Lakes boys track coach Kurt Rowells, when a competitor stopped by to feed the speedy senior some sugary praise. It was none other than Ray's old middle-school relay teammate, Leroy Chapman of Antioch. "Mention that he beat me," Chapman said with a smile, as he patted Ray on the shoulders and back. "Smoked me." Chapman, who finished second to Ray in the 400-meter dash, wasn't the only one blown away by a Lakes runner. If this were a high school baseball game, it would have been called after five innings. Lakes piled up 144 points to capture Friday night's Class 2A Vernon Hills sectional. Defending sectional champ Grayslake Central (76 points) was way back in second. Vernon Hills (69), Antioch (52) and St. Viator (36) rounded out the top five.

Stevenson’s a hit against Mundelein May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Despite 3 errors, Stevenson was able to roll by North Suburban Conference Lake Division champion Mundelein 7-1 Tuesday. A steady stream of hits helped. The Patriots tallied 9 hits, thanks to a 3-for-3 effort out of Jimmy Marchese, who got one of his hits to go for a double. Zach Novoselsky drove in 2 runs while going 3-for-4 and Eli Greenspon also finished with 2 RBI. Pitcher Mitchell Goll got the win for Stevenson, which improves to 17-10. He gave up only 1 walk over six innings.
