Montini leads the way at Antioch Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
With the top-ranked Class 2A wrestling team in the state in the field, getting out of the Antioch individual sectional was going to be a difficult task Saturday. Ten-time state champion Montini headlined the powerful meet with eight champions going to Champaign next weekend for the state meet. The top four finishers in each of the 14 weight classes earned a berth to the Assembly Hall, and the Broncos had qualifiers in every division except for 285 pounds. Carmel Catholic proved to be the big winners out of Lake County, as the Corsairs will send four individuals downstate, including No. 1-ranked senior Jake Cochrane (40-1).

Clark, Lakes size up Grant Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
With a full week off between games, the Lakes boys basketball team tried a few new things at practice. One of them worked quite nicely Saturday night against visiting Grant. Direll Clark, a 5-foot-11 guard who is usually seen hitting 3-pointers and jumpers, could have been mistaken for an old-school, back-to-the-basket center with the way he was moving in the paint. He worked out with the other big men in practice this week to see if he could use his football player strength to his advantage as a post player. He was a load in leading Lakes to a 63-54 victory over the Bulldogs, scoring most of his 14 points on strong moves in the paint, complete with plenty of pump fakes and spin moves for good measure.

Prasse tied a personal best with 30 points plus 7 assists in a decisive victory over Providence.

Perfection the norm for NSC Prairie champion Vernon Hills Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Alina Lehocky, “Go Go Gadget Arms” to her Vernon Hills basketball team, might have needed her exceptional hands and arms to pen that long note on the basketball she gave to her parents. On Senior Day, Lehocky and fellow seniors Brie Bahlmann and Meri Bennett-Swanson penned essay-like thank-you notes to their moms and dads. Each girl’s canvas was a brown-and-white basketball. If the ball slipped while writing, starting over would have been time-consuming and potentially expensive, too. “We were all really careful,” Lehocky said. The Cougars expect perfection — on the basketball court, too. Vernon Hills completed a perfect run in the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division for the second year in a row Saturday. Junior forward Lauren Webb scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Lehocky added a season-high 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, as the Cougars defeated visiting Lakes 64-39.

Kohler’s OT block saves Lakes win Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Some rejections end in tears. Jake Kohler’s certainly did on Friday night. The Lakes senior guard came up with the biggest rejection of his career when he blocked a driving layup attempt by North Chicago in the final seconds of an overtime battle for first place in the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division. The defensive stand sealed the Eagles’ frenetic 67-66 victory over visiting North Chicago in front of a packed gym in Lake Villa.

Libertyville prevails in NSC battle with Grant Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Once again it was a two-team race Saturday as defending champion Grant and archrival Libertyville battled it out for the North Suburban Conference wrestling championship. The Bulldogs held a slim 9-point advantage over Libertyville heading into the second day of the 57th annual league meet, held at Stevenson. But the Wildcats turned the tables in the semifinal round to win 223.5 to 211.5 over Grant. The victory marked the fourth NSC crown in five years for Libertyville, and its 19th overall. It looks like No. 20 is a strong possibility next year, with the abundance of young talent on the Wildcats roster.
