NSC rises up downstate May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
All season long, Lakes and Grant battled for boys track supremacy in the North Suburban Conference. On Saturday in the state finals at O’Brien Field and Eastern Illinois University, the Eagles and Bulldogs showed the rest of the state what the NSC and all of Lake County already knew: They’re pretty good at this running, jumping and throwing stuff. As part of the Class 2A finals session, Lakes qualified individuals in seven events Saturday and wound up with its highest state finish, taking fourth overall. The Eagles’ 29 points were just 8 points behind third-place Bloomington. Cahokia won its third consecutive Class 2A state title with 99.5 points to 40 for second place East St. Louis.

For the fourth time in the past five years, Grayslake Central’s baseball team will be adding a regional plaque to its trophy case. In an exciting 2-1 victory over Lakes, the Rams rode the arm of Jack Spicer and the clutch hitting of Kyle Balling, Ryan Fontana and Freddie Landers to pull out the Class 3A regional title at Lakes and advance to their own sectional next week. Grayslake Central (24-13), which trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, will play Lakeview at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

  • Lakes pitcher Justin Demand delivers during the Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Antioch in a Class 3A regional semifinal at Lakes on Friday.

Demand, Lakes strike again May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Justin Demand's final fastball popped leather, and moments later from beyond the fence in center field came more sounds that were pleasant to the ears of Lakes. Snap, crackle, pop, sizzle. Pretty. Pretty appropriate. Demand's 16-strikeout performance against Antioch last month was worthy of fireworks, and Friday the Lakes lefty got them. Which he earned again. After Demand pitched No. 2 Lakes to a 1-0 win over No. 3 Antioch in the teams' Class 3A Lakes regional semifinal, a small fireworks show briefly took place. "Perfect timing," Lakes coach Ray Gialo said. "Somebody must have been looking out for us, I guess."

  • Lakes’ Evelyn Felipez competed in the 100- and 200-meter wheelchair races last weekend at the girls track and field state finals at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Roll model: Lakes’ Felipez medals downstate May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Evelyn Felipez remembers the first time she laid eyes upon the track at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium. "It was breathtaking," she said of last weekend's girls state track meet. "It was huge. It was a crazy experience." Felipez said she was excited to be surrounded by athletes and see the stands filled with fans. But when the Lakes High School freshman wheeled herself to the starting post, there was one thought and one goal: win. She did, and in the process made history. In the first wheelchair races hosted by IHSA, Felipez took home two medals, first in the 100-meter and second in the 200-meter races.

  • Warren’s Martin Martinez competes in the Class 3A 1,600-meter run during the boys track state meet preliminaries in Charleston on Friday.

Full-throated Fobbe puts it all together for Stevenson May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Stevenson senior Jordan Fobbe has added a lot to his shot put style over the last few weeks, and with everything he has added, the shot just keeps going farther. So in time for his first throw in the Class 3A shot put event in boys track and field state preliminaries at O'Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, Fobbe added a loud grunt that has become ever-so-popular among shot put throwers. Whether it actually adds distance to the outcome remains up for debate, this much isn't: it worked on Friday for Fobbe. His first throw in the prelims was the best he has ever thrown the shot. The loud grunt was accompanied by an equally loud thud as the shot landed 56 feet, 7 inches from the ring. Another personal best throw marked an improvement of 10 feet over the last two weeks and a spot in the finals with the second-best toss from prelims.

Chokshi made 3 penalty kick saves in the shootout, along with a couple of other key stops in the final 10 minutes of regulation."I felt like something was going to happen," said Chokshi who made 9 saves and recorded her ninth shutout of the season. "All the girls and these coaches believed that we could do it." That self-confidence helped third-seeded Grayslake Central get past No. 6 Lakes 1-0 (5-4 in a seven-round penalty kick shootout) in the Class 2A Grayslake Central regional final.
