  • McClaughry, Lake Zurich handle Libertyville Jan 31, 2015 11:09 PM
Not only did Lake Zurich even the score on Saturday, so did Will McClaughry. McClaughry, the Bears’ 6-foot-7 center, says he didn’t have his best performance in an earlier game against Libertyville, a loss, back in December. He was disappointed because he always enjoys the challenge of keeping up with Libertyville twin towers Joe Borcia (6-foot-10) and Ben Kimpler (6-foot-6). “I’ve been going up against Joe in AAU and in fall workouts and I know some of his moves and I think he got the better of me last time,” McClaughry said. “This time, I’d like to say I got the better of him.” McClaughry poured in 16 points, hit three 3-pointers and helped take Borcia and Kimpler out of the game in leading Lake Zurich to a 63-47 North Suburban Conference Lake Division victory over the host Wildcats.

  • Stevenson edges Grant for first NSC title Jan 31, 2015 8:45 PM
A new rivalry was born Saturday in the 60th annual North Suburban Conference wrestling meet. Upstart Stevenson and perennial power Grant went toe to toe the entire weekend at Warren, before the Patriots ultimately won their first NSC championship by the slimmest of margins, 225.5 to 225.0, over the Bulldogs. “I don’t think there has ever been a tournament that defines team effort more than this tournament did for us,” Stevenson coach Shane Cook said. “It took all 14 guys working together. We knew how strong Grant’s guys were at certain weights, and we knew every match mattered.”

Warren was the runner-up at 5,498 and Stevenson took third at 5,431 in the 12-team field.

  • Lakes taking visual approach to game-readiness Jan 29, 2015 11:12 PM
Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Videos work nicely, too. Instead of just telling all his seniors to play like they’re savoring every last moment of this dwindling basketball season, Lakes coach Chris Snyder decided to show them how others have done so. “We’ve been watching some inspirational movies, like ‘Hoop Dreams,’” Snyder said. “I liked it when we got to the part about William Gates’ last game. I wanted to give our seniors a sense of the season being over and what that feels like and just how you have to play like you’re cherishing every moment, because it will be over soon.”

Welcome to the rough-and-tough world of girls basketball, Jordyn Hughes. Yes, the Warren freshman looks like a player to keep an eye on. “Against Zion, I hit my head on the floor,” said Hughes, who was out two weeks with a concussion. On Tuesday night at Lake Zurich, Hughes shook of the cob webs and scored her team’s first 10 points of the game. Still, it was anyone’s game at halftime as Warren held a 22-19 lead. Hughes finished with a game-high 18 points and 3 steals, and the Blue Devils held the Bears to just 7 second-half points in a 46-26 North Suburban Lake Division romp.

  • Poetker powers Stevenson downstate Jan 24, 2015 10:40 PM
Only a 6-pin denied Matt Poetker perfection. The Stevenson bowler settled for a 299 in his fourth game Saturday as part of the Stevenson sectional at Lakeside Lanes in Mundelein on Saturday. After he rolled his final ball, he couldn’t even watch it spin down the lane. “It was something to experience,” said Poetker, who had a 300 game two years ago, but not in high school competition. “It really gave the team the push it needed. I got really nervous on the last shot. The ball stuck on the thumb. Whatever happened, happened at that point. I really didn’t look. I had my eyes closed.” Stevenson had highlights other than Poetker’s 299 game, as the Patriots qualified for state for the first time along with five other teams. Harlem won the sectional with one of the best 6-game pinfalls (6,552) in the state. Rockton Hononegah was a close second (6,537). Stevenson took third place (6,215), followed by St. Charles East (6,027), Lake Zurich (5,983) and Freeport (5,960) in the 16-team field. All six teams will compete in the state tournament beginning Friday at St. Clair Lanes in downstate O’Fallon.

  • Lake Forest survives Lake Zurich’s best shot Jan 24, 2015 9:30 PM
Lake Zurich focused on its target and chucked Spears. At Evan Boudreaux. “Tim did a good job tonight,” Lake Zurich guard Mike Travlos said of teammate Tim Spears. In an attempt to at least slow down the Dartmouth-bound Boudreaux and Lake Forest’s once-beaten boys basketball team, Lake Zurich started Spears, a 6-foot-1, broad-shouldered junior. Spears did his best, but Boudreaux was his usual tough self in the end, as visiting Lake Forest pulled out a 52-49 victory in a North Suburban Lake Division thriller Friday night.
