    Stevenson’s Molly Thon hit a groundball that scored Trisha Porzycki from third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and exactly one month after losing to Libertyville in walk-off fashion, the Patriots turned the tables. Stevenson scored four times in its last at-bat to rally past the Wildcats 9-8 in a North Suburban Lake Division thriller Wednesday.

    Chase Slota dominated Grant en route to a 6-0 victory for Lakes’ baseball team Wednesday. Slota allowed just 1 hit, a bloop single to shallow right, and struck out six hitters, as the Eagles improved to 12-8 and 6-2 in the North Suburban Prairie Division.

    Matt Carmody slammed 7 kills, and Lake Zurich’s boys volleyball team continued its perfect play in the North Suburban Conference with a 25-22, 25-13 win over host Lakes on Wednesday night.

    Alex Gibson turned in a gem on the mound for Round Lake’s baseball team Tuesday. The junior pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 14, as the Panthers defeated visiting North Chicago 12-0 in North Suburban Lake Division action.

    All season long, the defense has been a delight for fans of Lake Zurich’s girls soccer team. After all, the Bears have allowed just 8 goals in 17 games. And now, they’ve won the North Suburban Lake Division title with a 5-0-1 record to go with an overall mark of 14-2-1. Lake Zurich’s defensive prowess showed again in a 3-1 victory over Mundelein on Tuesday night in Lake Zurich.

  • Schneider, Guercio have it covered for Lake Zurich May 6, 2014 1:07 AM
    Just remember that just one softball season ago, tall Lake Zurich catcher Amanda Guercio was playing softball for Lake Zurich Middle School South’s team. And actually, that team was pretty good, only falling in the end to Prairie School. The Bears (15-4, 5-2) also have a senior pitcher in 5-foot-1 Olivia Schneider. And a considerably taller freshman catcher in Guercio. Schneider did her job on Monday, limiting visiting Zion-Benton to 2 runs in 7 innings. And Guercio provided the offense for her new Bears with a 2-run homer and 2-run double. Lake Zurich avenged an earlier loss to the Zee-Bees with this 4-2 win.

    The relaxed, Hollywood smile on Derek Kornfeind’s face suggests his confidence is back. So, the senior lefty is back in Lake Zurich’s starting rotation. And his performance against visiting Stevenson on Saturday morning suggests he’s staying in it for the rest of the season. Kornfeind followed up his quality start against a hard-hitting Grant team eight days earlier by pitching a 3-hit shutout, as the Bears won 7-0 in a North Suburban Lake Division makeup game.

    On a cool, overcast, wet evening at Grayslake Central, which hosted the Lake County invite, Warren's Brittny Ellis, as always, weathered the competition. She anchored Warren’s winning 400 relay and then sped to wins in the 100 (12.22), 400 (58.25) and 200 (25.33) dashes.

    Libertyville’s baseball team made its annual trip to Miller Park in Milwaukee a success Wednesday. Conor Simpson went 2-for-3, and winning pitcher Mitch Townsend was 1-for-2 with a double and 2 RBI, as the Wildcats defeated Oregon 6-3.
