  • Michiels, ‘underdog’ West Chicago take regional title May 31, 2014 5:09 PM
Jon Michiels hadn’t hit a baseball over an outfield fence all season. On Saturday the West Chicago senior first baseman did it twice. “I couldn’t have waited for a better time to actually put some over the fence,” Michiels said. “It was about time.” Michiels hit 2 homers and drove in 5 runs and West Chicago won its first regional championship since 2006, defeating host Lake Park 7-4 in Roselle.

  • Lake Park gives itself a chance to make history May 30, 2014 9:56 PM
For Lake Park to win a historic fifth straight boys track and field championship it must be a Saturday to remember. Friday’s Class 3A preliminaries of the boys track and field state finals ended with the Lancers advancing eight entries into Saturday’s finals, matching Neuqua Valley, York and Edwardsville, one more than both Downers Grove North and Thornton.

  • Lake Park plays like a top seed May 30, 2014 11:23 PM
Top-seeded Lake Park defeated a scrappy Addison Trail Blazers 18-25, 25-15, 25-13 on Friday at the Conant sectional semifinals. The Lancers advance to play Barrington, the No. 2 seed, on Tuesday in the sectional final.

  • Rapshus, Lake Park stymie Geneva May 30, 2014 12:03 AM
Lake Park senior pitcher Rhett Rapshus has been the tough-luck kid throughout much of the baseball season. However, the hard-throwing right-hander found himself on the other side of the ledger during Thursday’s Class 4A regional semifinal clash against Geneva. Rapshus (3-6), who will attend Black Hawk College next season, tossed a 2-hit complete game to lift the 12th-seeded Lancers (13-22) to a 4-3 victory over the fifth-seeded Vikings in Roselle.

  • Conant manufactures a victory May 28, 2014 10:06 PM
Sure, Conant’s softball team has belted a school-record 49 homers this season. But don’t think for a second that’s the Cougars’ game plan. “They might go over the fence but that’s not our goal,” said Rachel O’Malley who has sent a team-high 11 over the fence this spring. “We’re a small-ball team. Our goal is to get on first base any way we can.” “Sixty feet at a time,” echoed Dream Aaron, the Cougars’ sophomore catcher. “That’s our real motto.” And the No. 2 seeded Cougars lived up to that philosophy in the final inning of their 4-3 victory over No. 15 Lake Park in the Class 4A Hoffman Estate regional semifinal. The game was suspended on Tuesday with the score tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning.

  • Lake Park’s challenge of Conant will wait for resolution May 27, 2014 9:06 PM
There will be plenty of drama from the get-go when No. 2 Conant and No. 15 Lake Park resume their suspended game from Tuesday. The semifinal of the Class 4A Hoffman Estates softball regional was tied at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning with senior Stephanie Sturino leading off the Lancers. During her at-bat, the lightning detector sounded and the teams left the field. They will return today at 4 p.m. to resume the game. The second semifinal between No. 7 Schaumburg (23-8) and No. 10 Hoffman Estates (15-14) will follow immediately with the championship still set for 11 a.m. Saturday.

  • Lake Park endures some pain for gain May 24, 2014 12:24 AM
Marcus Jegede, a key to Lake Park’s shot at an unprecedented fifth straight boys state track championship, got maximum results from minimum effort. He had little choice. At Friday’s Class 3A Lake Park boys sectional in Roselle, Jegede was on a crash diet of one jump per event to save a testy hamstring that had allowed him to long jump at only two meets this spring, and no triple jumps.

  • Loud and clear, Terry’s play lifts Lake Park May 20, 2014 10:51 PM
About the only thing Lake Park senior Dominick Terry couldn’t do during Tuesday’s boys volleyball match with Glenbard East was speak. “I don’t know what it is. My throat’s just closed. Screaming all match, it’s gone,” Terry said. “There was a point I couldn’t even talk in the game. Before the game I couldn’t breathe. I don’t know if it was the adrenaline or what, but it kicked in. It worked.” As usual, there was plenty for the Lancers and their vociferous fans to scream about. They are one step closer to at least sharing the DuPage Valley Conference title after beating the Rams 25-15, 25-18 in Roselle.

  • ‘Funny idea’ works for Enright, WW South May 16, 2014 10:38 AM
The 3,200-meter relay and the high jump are something of an odd combination in girls track and field, but Alex Enright makes them work. The Wheaton Warrenville South junior qualified in both events for next weekend’s state meet in Charleston out of Thursday’s Class 3A sectional at Red Grange Field in Wheaton.

  • York, Lake Park go 1-2 at DuPage County meet May 10, 2014 12:08 AM
Naperville Central all-state hurdler Michael Jopes couldn’t quite catch Lake Park standout Antonio Shenault in the 110-meter hurdles, but he still managed to have a great Friday night at the DuPage County boys track meet in Naperville. Jopes ran a personal-best time of 39.08 to win the 300 low hurdles, and he took a solid second to Shenault in the high hurdles. After placing at state last year in both the 300 hurdles and the 1,600 relay, Jopes appears ready for another postseason charge this spring.
