And she achieved that lofty standing by virtue of a frenetic finish. Going into the final game on Saturday, the Patriots junior was in the 12th spot, just thinking about trying to hang on for a medal. But Rudy finished with an impressive 247 game that moved her up to third place (2,639 over the 12 games) in the girls bowling state tournament at Cherry Bowl.

    Prairie Ridge co-op junior Maddie Solka wasn’t even supposed to compete on Thursday night at the Lake Park girls gymnastics sectional. Solka, a Cary-Grove student, had injured her back in practice early in the week and was listed as doubtful for Thursday. But Solka ended up saving the day for the Wolves. Prairie Ridge was down to three gymnasts for the final event, floor exercise. Solka stepped in and gutted out a clutch performance in taking 10th place with a 9.3, propelling the Wolves to their fourth consecutive sectional title with 149.25 points in Roselle. Without Solka, Prairie Ridge would have finished with 139.93 points and missed the state cut. Instead the Wolves joined Geneva, Lyons Township, and Glenbrook South as automatic qualifiers. Fremd (146.25), Barrington (144.275), and Prospect (144.075) finished 2-3-4 at Lake Park and join DeKalb/Sycamore as at-large team qualifiers to state.

    It would have been easy for the Bartlett boys basketball team to retreat into its shell after junior Jason Hasenberg missed 2 free throws, either one of which would have won Tuesday’s nonconference game at Lake Park with no time left on the fourth-quarter clock. Instead, the Hawks doubled down on their determination and found a way to outlast the DuPage Valley Conference leaders 60-58 in overtime in Roselle on Tuesday.

    Barrington senior Jessica Lee has certainly had her share of injuries and illnesses during her four years. A left elbow injury interupted her freshman season. Her sophomore season ended with a torn ACL, and mono slowed her junior season. This year, she has grinded through a torn meniscus that she will require surgery on after the season. But Lee was able to erase four years of frustration on Wednesday night at the Barrington girls gymnastics regional, combining with junior Abby Hasanov to lead the host Fillies to the regional title with an impressive 146.125.
