A recent appellate court decision will mean a huge tax break for local country clubs unless state lawmakers act to change the law. Kane County Supervisor of Assessment Mark Armstrong received support to push to change the law. Kane County's country clubs are in line to shave up to 93 percent off their property taxes, which other taxpayers will take on. "The court effectively created a country club tax exemption," Armstrong said.

Some of the old guard painted Lauzen as trying to bring partisanship to a traditionally non-partisan board. "We really want to remain nonpartisan. We're splitting ourselves up, and I don't like it,” Barb Wojnicki said.

The average Kane County resident may see a $55 hike in their property tax bill if county board members agree to a referendum that would create a new tax to benefit the developmentally disabled. Local social organizations renewed a lobbying effort they began a couple of months ago to create the new tax Thursday, and the idea made it past its first committee hurdle. The county has less than three weeks to decide if it will float the new tax on April ballots.

Bob Getz, who was hoping a discovery recount would have paved the way for a court challenge, has finally conceded the Kane County Board District 22 race to Douglas Scheflow, the Republican who beat him by 13 votes. His decision came Monday, days after the recount didn't go his way. "I've been advised it will cost me approximately $10,000 to proceed to the next step,"Getz wrote to Scheflow in his letter of concession.

New Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen was known for having a penchant for theatrics during his days as a state senator. On Monday Lauzen greeted the new county board with a sports montage video meant to inspire the new officials to greatness. Lauzen pledged to reverse the low morale and "atmosphere of fear" he believes currently exists in the county.
