    Conant’s softball team received 2-run homers from senior Rachel O’Malley in the first inning and sophomore Dream Aaron in the sixth en route to 9-1 victory on Tuesday over visiting Hoffman Estates.

    Members of the Prairie Brass Band will be rehearsing before a concert next weekend. They rehearse in the 2nd floor music room. Our interest would be in the conductor (who also serves as music director at Christian Liberty) Peter Held, and the principal tenor horn player, Mary Gingrich, who also is in the running as the new conductor of the band.

    Erin Ward hit the first pitch of the game for a home run. In the second inning, she took it step better, belting a grand slam. Barrington’s senior shortstop ended up 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, 6 RBI and 3 runs as the Fillies blanked host Palatine 14-0 in the Mid-Suburban West softball game on Monday.

     
  • Bloom helps Hoffman power past LibertyvilleMay 10, 2014 12:00 AM
    Ethan Bloom hit a 3-run homer in the first inning against Libertyville and the host Hawks were able to stay in front and claim a 5-4 victory in nonconference baseball Saturday. Matt Roesch also doubled and scored in the first inning for Hoffman Estates (9-13-1).

    Sophomore Alex Masnica capped off Elk Grove’s trio of home runs in a big way Saturday afternoon. After Becca Maher and Brooke Barges had already cleared the fence earlier in the game with solo blasts, Masnica walloped a 2-run walk-off homer to left center with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Grens a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader with visiting Elk Grove. Gina Cirrincione doubled to set up Masnica’s blast which gave pitcher Mary Hirschauer the complete game win that included 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. The Grenadiers went on to sweep the twin bill with a 13-2 five-inning victory as freshman Taylor Leach fired a 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk. She also belted a triple.

    Hersey’s boys volleyball team excelled in tournament play at Glenbrook North over the weekend, topping Barrington in the semifinals and then knocking off Niles West in the championship matchup to win the tournament.

    Barrington closed in style on Friday at the Mid-Suburban League girls track meet. The Fillies capped things by taking first in the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay and to nail down their sixth MSL title with 140 points at Wheeling. Palatine finished second with 137.5 points, just ahead of defending champion Prospect (136).

    Darren Llewellyn says soccer can be crazy and cruel — which is one reason he enjoys the sport so much. It was cruel Friday night, to be sure. But not for Llewellyn’s Hersey team. Hersey and visiting Buffalo Grove battled to a scoreless draw, and that outcome clinched a Huskies appearance in Wednesday’s Mid-Suburban League Soccer Bowl at Barrington. The Huskies (16-4-1, 10-0-1) earned their second trip to the league championship matchup in the last three years with 31 points, 3 points clear of the Bison (19-1-2, 9-0-2, 28).

     
  • Stevenson steps up, grabs sectional triumphMay 8, 2014 12:00 AM
    It may not have gone exactly as scripted, but it was a still a pretty good meet for Stevenson on Thursday night as the Patriots hosted their own IHSA boys gymnastics sectional. Stevenson earned the second of five automatic berths to the Elite Eight meet next Friday at Hinsdale Central as the Patriots rolled to the championship of the nine-team sectional with 153.6 points.

The host Bison (14-8) won the game in the bottom of the seventh on sophomore Emily Carnes’ walk-off double.

    What kind of game was it? “I came here with a voice,” Hersey coach Dick Mortensen managed to croak afterward, “but I’m not leaving with one.” Nor was he leaving with a victory, after a tense Mid-Suburban League boys water polo championship game at Palatine on Wednesday. The host Pirates managed to protect a slim lead most of the way before finally getting some breathing room in the fourth quarter. Palatine won 18-13 to get a fifth MSL crown under coach Joe Grzybek and denied a Hersey program making its second straight title game appearance.

    Hersey boys volleyball coach Nancy Lill was encouraging her players to scurry off and hit the books after Tuesday’s match to prepare for their upcoming AP exams. No worries for the Huskies — after all, they’d just ‘aced’ their big Mid-Suburban East test against Prospect. In a match that featured two teams coming in with 6-1 conference records, Hersey pounded out 10 service aces to defeat the visiting Knights 25-23, 25-22 at Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.
