  • Fab four smashes relay record in Meadows’ victory Dec 13, 2014 8:36 PM
The record-board rearranging continued for Rolling Meadows’ boys swimming team on Saturday. Probably the most important change didn’t have anything to do with time, but rather final placement. Never before in coach Monika Chiappetta’s 17 years had the Mustangs taken top team honors in the Wild Stallion Jamboree. But there was Rolling Meadows, 3 points ahead of defending Mid-Suburban East champ Prospect on Saturday, and well ahead of strong teams from Hersey, Cary-Grove and Lane Tech.

  • New Trier thwarts Hersey with clutch shot Dec 13, 2014 7:17 PM
Before the season, everyone considered Fremd and New Trier the clear top two girls basketball teams in the Cook County suburbs. In a rare opportunity to face both in the first six weeks of the season, Hersey almost completed a sweep over the powerhouses. Two weeks after a stunning 47-43 win over Fremd, the Huskies almost shocked New Trier on Saturday afternoon in Arlington Heights. Hersey held the Trevians to 1 field goal in the final 12:20 of the game. But that field goal with two seconds left in the game proved to be the difference in a battle well worth the admission price of $3 at the Ken Carter Gymnasium. New Trier junior Kathryn Pedi swished an open 3-pointer off an inbounds play with two seconds left to lift the visitors to a 42-39 triumph. Hersey missed on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

  • Prospect clears key MSL East test against Hersey Dec 12, 2014 10:25 PM
Depth matters in team swimming. A lot. The Hersey boys swim team is building it. Prospect already has it, which was the main reason it prevailed 106.5-79.5 in Friday’s Mid-Suburban East dual-meet clash at Wheeling.

  • Haas has the touch as Hersey handles Elk Grove Dec 12, 2014 10:59 PM
About the only things Hersey senior guard Payton Haas missed Friday night was his final free throw. Haas scored a season-high 26 points and pulled down 9 of the Huskies’ 33 rebounds in a 64-50 win over Elk Grove in Arlington Heights on Friday night.

  • Short-handed Fremd hangs on at Conant; Barrington rolls Dec 12, 2014 12:25 AM
Fremd’s girls basketball team overcame the absence of standout sophomore Grace Tworek on Thursday night and extended its winning streak to 16 games in the Mid-Suburban West with a 46-41 triumph at Conant. Senior Haley Gorecki led the Vikings (9-1, 3-0) with a game-high 22 points and also collected 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals while teammates Erin Lenahan and Bryana Hopkins each chipped in 8 points. • Wheeling frosh Burgess busts out a 300 Dec 10, 2014 9:05 PM
The already boisterous atmosphere of a Mid-Suburban League girls bowling meet got an extra shot of adrenaline Wednesday night. Karsyn Burgess, a Wheeling freshman, fired the first 300 game the conference has seen since the 2010/11 season. A no-doubt-about-it final strike put Burgess in the MSL record books. “I’m really excited,” said the frosh. “I’m used to stringing strikes together, and after the ninth frame I was already pretty proud of myself. “Then came the 10th frame, and the pressure was on.”

  • Defense serves Hersey against Bartlett Dec 9, 2014 10:38 PM
Hersey’s shooting touch was a little off on Tuesday night at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in a nonconference game with visiting Bartlett. “There are going to be nights where your shots just don’t fall,” said Hersey veteran coach Mary Fendley. “Obviously this was one of those nights.” But this was also a night where the Huskies’ defense stepped into the spotlight. And that’s when things brightened up for the Huskies. In battle between top-20 teams in the Daily Herald girls basketball rankings, No. 11 Hersey came away with a 44-30 triumph over the No. 20 Hawks in Arlington Heights.

  • Jacobs flexes muscles at mega quad Dec 6, 2014 9:55 PM
When he was a freshman, Cody Ferencz endured a 7-win season — with the prospects of ever reaching double-digit victories in his career at Jacobs looking dim. After sweeping all three duals Saturday at Glenbard West, Ferencz and his teammates have propelled the Golden Eagles’ overall record to a dazzling 7-0 — and the prospects are looking up for even bigger and better things. The Eagles had far too much firepower for Bartlett, Joliet West and the host and were the best of the five clubs competing at the annual Hilltopper Mega Quad in Glen Ellyn, setting up an important Fox Valley Conference dual meet Thursday at McHenry. The Hilltoppers went 2-2, while Joilet West ended 2-1. Hersey, with heavyweight and 2014 state qualifier Tyler Cooke sidelined by the flu, finished 1-2. A shorthanded Bartlett was 0-3.

The Saxons worked overtime on Saturday at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights before posting a 59-54 victory over Hersey. Brendan Parker (18 points), Jason Schoo (13) and Charlie Quilco (10) weer top scorers for Schaumburg (4-2). Payton Haas and Joseph Coffaro each scored 18 points to pace Hersey (3-3).

  • Prospect puts it all together against Hersey Dec 6, 2014 12:33 AM
Hersey and Prospect entered Friday night’s boys basketball games with totally different starts to their season, as the Huskies hosted the Mid-Suburban League East bout. After dealing with three straight losses that were all by less than 4 points, Prospect (2-3, 1-0) stunned Hersey and the Huskies’ faithful with a 53-37 lopsided victory.

  • Schauble’s return to Palatine triumphant Dec 5, 2014 10:42 PM
You’ll have to forgive John Schauble if he looked a bit tired Friday evening. He had been up most of the previous night pondering his return as coach of the Palatine boys swimming and diving team. See, the last time he coached the Pirates was 1990. Since then, he served as Aquatics Director and physical education teacher at Stevenson, where he founded the Patriot Aquatic Club. But life is often cyclical, and there was Schauble on deck at the Palatine pool Friday, watching with a satisfaction as his charges roared to a convincing 118-67 victory over Buffalo Grove in a Mid-Suburban League crossover meet.

  • Where there’s a Will, there’s a way to a Prospect scoring record Dec 5, 2014 10:59 PM
