  • Green means go: Fremd floors it at Stevenson Nov 15, 2014 8:38 PM
Those arriving promptly for the 1 p.m. start of the girls swimming sectional meet at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon were challenged by the volume of traffic around the school, as the Patriots were hosting a Class 8A playoff football which also featured a 1 p.m. kickoff. There was heavy traffic inside the natatorium, too — figuratively moving to the east, toward next weekend’s state championships at Evanston Township High School. Fremd was the most successful lane navigator. The Vikings won all three relays in pool-record times to win with an impressive 299.5 points, topping Barrington (221) and Stevenson (220.5) in the team race.

  • Girls cross country: Trophy time for Palatine Nov 8, 2014 9:36 PM
Palatine was on the outside looking in at last year’s Class 3A girls cross country state meet. The Pirates finished a distant fourth, one spot away from a state trophy. But this year Palatine rose to the occasion, placing five girls in the top 37 to secure second place with 91 points at Detweiller Park in Peoria. “Such a difference from a year ago,” said Palatine coach Joe Parks of the Pirates’ drive to a 14th state trophy. “I knew it could go either way, but the girls pulled it off and almost won the title.”

  • Conant’s Dale 2nd in a classic state race Nov 8, 2014 7:51 PM
From the start of the boys cross country season all signs pointed toward an epic battle for the Class 3A state title between McHenry senior Jesse Reiser and Conant senior Zach Dale. And the race proved to be instant classic. On a clear and crisp fall afternoon Reiser and Dale separated from a cluster of five and locked horns in the final 800 meters, with Reiser using one final surge with 400 meters remaining to secure the state championship in 14 minutes, 10 seconds at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

  • Girls swimming: Fremd finishes on top Nov 2, 2014 7:45 PM
Of the eight individual events contested in Saturday’s Mid-Suburban League girls swimming championships at Barrington, only one of them had a winner from Fremd. That was senior Saki Takumiya in the 100-yard butterfly. But this Fremd team is clearly more than the sum of its parts. The Vikings won the medley and 200 free relays, and no Fremd invidual entry finished lower than sixth place. That kind of consistency combined with a touch of misfortune for Barrington helped the Vikings claim the Mid-Suburban League title for a third straight year. Fremd finished with 305 points to Barrington’s 260.
