Inverness man gets probation for retirement home burglary May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
An Inverness man pleaded guilty Tuesday to taking a flat screen television from a Palatine retirement home. In exchange for his guilty plea to burglary, Leonardo Adames was sentenced to 24 months probation and ordered to pay $500 restitution.

Barrington boy rejoins classmates after train accident May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Classmates cheered as Dominic Szymanski, a fifth grader at Hough Street School in Barrington, made a surprise visit Tuesday, almost two months after the 11-year-old survived being struck by a train. The unexpected reunion came during an all-school assembly for a student performance of "Romeo and Juliet," and a day after Dominic personally thanked the first-responders and good Samaritans who came to his rescue.

Barrington train accident survivor thanks rescuersMay 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Dominic Szymanski, the 11-year-old Barrington boy who survived being struck by a train in the village on March 15, made his first public appearance Monday night as the police officers, paramedics and good Samaritans who came to his aid nearly two months earlier were honored. "Thank you very much, everyone!" Dominic told the group of well-wishers who gathered outside the meeting room at Barrington village hall.

District 211 students ready to show off houses they built May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
After two years of work, three homes built by Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 students are ready for families to move in. An open house will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at the homes, located at 72 W. Illinois Ave., 86 W. Illinois Ave. and 151 Boynton Ave. in Palatine. The public will have an opportunity to bid on the houses at the open house events.

For the first time this century, Buffalo Grove will play for the Mid-Suburban League softball championship. Under third-year coach Jamie Paul, the Bison clinched the MSL East on Monday with a 6-5 victory over visiting Hersey.

Another command performance by Elk Grove’s Camacho May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Elk Grove senior pitcher David Camacho completed a perfect run through his Mid-Suburban League opponents, tossing a complete-game 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts as the Grenadiers wrapped up regular-season league play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Conant on Monday. Camacho improved to 7-1 overall and finished 6-0 against MSL foes. He allowed 2 walks. Luc DiMaso did most of the damage offensively for Elk Grove (21-8, 12-4). He had 2 hits — a solo homer and a double — and scored both runs. Michael Anciulis also had 2 hits, including a double.

Perfect finish for Dolezal, Barrington in MSL May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Perfection was the word of the day for Barrington's softball team. The Fillies ended a perfect season in the Mid-Suburban West with a perfect game from sophomore pitcher Keenan Dolezal. Dolezal retired 21 straight batters before the Fillies got her the win in bottom of the seventh inning at the Fields of Dreams. Barrington junior first baseman Katie Dehnert's hard infielder grounder with two outs and the bases loaded brought home Erin Ward with the winning run. The 1-0 victory gave Barrington its first West crown since 2009 and 16th divisional crown in school history.

Fremd’s Patton shares winning ride on pommel horse May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Fremd's C.J. Patton doesn't mind sharing. Patton along with Hinsdale Central's Brian Thompson and Wheaton co-op's David McDonald each scored a 9.55 to finish tied for first on the pommel horse in the boys gymnastics state finals Saturday night at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort. "First is first," said Patton, who was second in the state last year. "That was the goal, and I got it."

Meadows rolls to Fremd tourney win May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Rolling Meadows improved its record to 26-6 with a 5-0 run to the championship in the boys volleyball tournament hosted by Fremd on Saturday. The Mustangs topped Elk Grove 10-25, 27-25, 15-13 in the championship matchup. They also defeated West Aurora and York in three sets, and South Elgin and Fremd in two.

It turned out to be another finish to remember for Fremd's badminton team. Junior Angela Wu and senior Kelly Owens advanced through the singles consolation bracket in Saturday in Charleston to meet one another in the consolation semifs. Wu won that matchup 21-14, 21-9 to earn a spot in the fifth-place match, where she dropped a two-setter to Audrey Mang of New Trier. The points amassed by Wu and Owens helped the Vikings to another state trophy finish under coach Bob Hanson. Thornton Fractional South won the team championship with 16.5 points. Fremd and Naperville Central tied for second place with 12.

It seemed like an eternity for John Roncone, but his tennis team from Barrington is back on top for the first time since 2010. The Broncos lifted the Mid-Suburban League championship trophy on a cold, windy Saturday afternoon at host Wheeling thanks to supremacy at doubles and steady work at singles, particularly from No. 3 champ Zach Hennenfent. Barrington outscored Fremd by 14 points, 61-47. Prospect took third with 34.

Barrington had grown tired of playing second fiddle. For the five years previous, the Fillies girls water polo program had advanced to the sectional championship round — only to see Fremd earn a spot in the Elite Eight at Stevenson. On Saturday in Fremd's pool, the roles were reversed as Barrington edged the Vikings 12-10. It was sweet music indeed for the Mid-Suburban League champs.

D211 film festival gives students, teachers chance to learn May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
It's only been in existence for eight years, but a small film festival that was limited to students studying the craft at Palatine High School is now a district-wide event that has expanded to the surrounding community. "There's a lot of opportunities for still arts to be put on display ... but there hasn't been much for the media arts. That's why we've really worked to expand it," said Palatine High School art teacher Nick Hostert.
