    Two students from Hoffman Estates High School recently placed 2nd in the Illinois 2014 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition, earning them each a $5,000 scholarship to attend Universal Technical Institute.

    Defending Mid-Suburban East softball champion Buffalo Grove clinched at least a tie for another title on Wednesday with a 5-3 victory over visiting Elk Grove. The Bison (17-8, 11-3) won their tenth straight game as Julia Camardo (14-4) struck out seven, walked one and also won her tenth straight game.

    Conant’s softball team received 2-run homers from senior Rachel O’Malley in the first inning and sophomore Dream Aaron in the sixth en route to 9-1 victory on Tuesday over visiting Hoffman Estates.

    Erin Ward hit the first pitch of the game for a home run. In the second inning, she took it step better, belting a grand slam. Barrington’s senior shortstop ended up 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, 6 RBI and 3 runs as the Fillies blanked host Palatine 14-0 in the Mid-Suburban West softball game on Monday.

     
  • Libertyville leaps into the spotlight May 10, 2014 6:25 PM
    The Libertyville boys gymnastics team has been pining away in the shadows of rival teams Stevenson and Mundelein for the better part of the spring. But Saturday afternoon at the Mundelein sectional, the Wildcats stepped to the forefront with their best meet of the season to take first place with a season-high 147.2 points to advance to the Elite Eight meet next Friday at Hinsdale Central. It will be Libertyville’s first trip to the state meet as a team since 2007, and senior all-around champion Alex Pong was a huge key to the Cats’ success Saturday with a first-place 9.02 average (54.1 points).

     
  • Fremd seniors work out bugs to win auto skills contest May 10, 2014 1:01 AM
    Two Fremd High School students captured first place Friday in the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition at Universal Technical Institute in Lisle. The students had 90 minutes to correctly identify and repair intentionally installed “bugs” in identical 2014 Ford Fiestas.

     
  • Bloom helps Hoffman power past Libertyville May 10, 2014 10:10 PM
    Ethan Bloom hit a 3-run homer in the first inning against Libertyville and the host Hawks were able to stay in front and claim a 5-4 victory in nonconference baseball Saturday. Matt Roesch also doubled and scored in the first inning for Hoffman Estates (9-13-1).

     
  • Big finish for Barrington May 10, 2014 12:26 AM
    Barrington closed in style on Friday at the Mid-Suburban League girls track meet. The Fillies capped things by taking first in the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay and to nail down their sixth MSL title with 140 points at Wheeling. Palatine finished second with 137.5 points, just ahead of defending champion Prospect (136).

    Defending Mid-Suburban East softball champion Buffalo Grove found itself back in first place on Wednesday after a 5-4 victory over Schaumburg, the second-place team in the MSL West. The host Bison (14-8) won the game in the bottom of the seventh on sophomore Emily Carnes’ walk-off double.

    Elk Grove senior Brooke Barges belted a homer and went 3-for-4 as the host Grenadiers topped Hersey 8-4 on Tuesday. Melissa Picchi (2-for-4) also had 3 RBI for the Grens, who improved to 20-3 and 7-2 in the Mid-Suburban East softball standings where they own a half-game lead over Buffalo Grove (13-8,7-3).

  • Elk Grove students rally around coach with breast cancer May 5, 2014 1:24 PM
    Last week’s water polo games between Elk Grove and Rolling Meadows high schools drew a standing-room-only crowd — and yet it was hard to tell which fans were which. Fans and players alike were all were wearing the same T-shirt, which read: "Rivals united for a cause." For one day at least, the two teams — which share the Elk Grove High School pool — came together in support of the Lady Grenadiers’ 28-year old varsity coach, Alexa Rodheim, who is battling a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer.

    Austin Jetel allowed visiting Buffalo Grove only a pair of hits while striking out 12 to help Fremd earn a 2-0 victory in Mid-Suburban League crossover Friday. Fremd (10-9, 5-4) did all its scoring in the second as Marcus Middlebrook led off with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Joe Uhrich and the Vikings tacked on a run with a bases-loaded walk. Jetel allowed just 1 walk. Dan Levato tossed 3 scoreless innings for the Bison (5-14). Elk Grove 6, Hoffman Estates 5: Peter Arbov went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and 2 RBI at the plate, and also contributed a scoreless relief inning to help the visiting Grens prevail. Adam O’Malley also homered for Elk Grove (13-6), finishing 2-for-3 with a walk, and Johnny Assimakopoulos and Brandon Post had 2 hits apiece. Hoffman Estates did all its scoring in the fifth inning, but Grens starter Daryl Rivera was able to go 6 innings and earn the victory. Ethan Bloom went 3-for-3 with a homer, a double and 2 RBI. Prospect 8, Schaumburg 5: Grant Miller, Jackson Wrede and Jake Cavaiani each drove in 2 runs from their spots near the bottom of the batting order to help the visiting Knights tops the Saxons. Tom Flahaven went 1-for-3 with a walk, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases for Prospect (13-6-1). Mike Smith (5 IP, 2 earned runs) and Danny Devereux (2 IP, 3 K’s) handled pitching duties for the Knights, who have won four of their last five games. Barrington 9, Rolling Meadows 3: Jake Petersen finished 3-for-3 with a homer and 3 RBI as the host Broncos broke open a close game with a 5-run rally in the sixth inning. Brendan Battle had a pair of hits for the Broncos, and Shane Yorton, Luke Johnson and Anthony Lombardi each doubled. Richie Stefan pitched the first 5 innings for Barrington (19-6) and got the win, and Brad Powell tossed 2 scoreless relief innings to earn save. Palatine 9, Hersey 2: Zach Serna hit a solo homer and Nolan Gavin tripled and drove in 3 runs to pace host Palatine’s victory. Both teams had 7 hits and 2 errors, but Pirates starter Matthew Trembley limited Hersey to singles in a complete-game victory with 7 strikeouts. Matt Saltess and Joey Roy both doubles for Palatine (12-11), which snapped a three-game skid. CJ Reichel and Brett Harris had 2 hits apiece for Hersey (8-11-1). Deerfield 4, Maine West 3: The visiting Warriors pushed across 3 runs in the first inning but got nothing more as Deefield took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Eric Outlaw doubled and scored, and Crosley Duckmann had 2 of Maine West’s 5 hits. Matt Swanson struck out nine and went 6 inning for Maine West (5-12) in suffering the loss. Conant 8, Wheeling 8 (11 inn.): Both teams scored once in the 11th inning to remain deadlocked in MSL play at Conant. Jake Jordan doubled and drove in 2 runs for Wheeling. Brenden Spillane had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs, and Nathan Cooney and Brian Lorey had 2 hits each. Justin Webb (6 IP, 4 ER) and Lorey (5 IP, 1 ER) split the pitching duties for the Wildcats. Conant’s plate standouts included J.T. Peacock (2 doubles, 2 RBI), Brady Pelesh (4-for-6), Dan Modelski (3-for-5, walk) and Matt Fauth (2-for-5, double, 3 RBI). Steve Bola (7⅓ IP, 1 ER) and Brian Polaski (3⅔ IP, 3 ER) pitched for the Cougars (7-15-1).
