That quickly grew into a presence on the Special Olympics soccer team, and now, on Team Illinois in the national games. "It's a life-changing experience for me," she said.

    The Boy Scouts opened a Discovery Outpost Saturday at Woodfield Mall in an attempt to recruit more youngsters to the century-old “youth development” program. "This is the first one ever, so we’re just finding out what works best,” said Matt Thornton, interim Scout executive of the Northwest Suburban Council.

  • South Elgin routs Hoffman Estates for regional crown May 31, 2014 3:49 PM
    South Elgin delivered its second consecutive knock out punch in the state playoffs Saturday. The Storm struck for 10 runs in the fourth inning and thundered past host Hoffman Estates 12-0 for a Class 4A regional championship. The victory came on the heels of South Elgin’s 10-0 win over Wheaton North on Thursday. South Elgin (22-10), which won its second regional in the last three years, will meet St. Charles North on Thursday at the Schaumburg sectional.

    Schaumburg junior right-hander Shannon Felde has seen a lot of lineups this spring while putting together an 11-4 record. But Wednesday was her first look at the Hoffman Estates batting order. She looked like she was right on her game. Felde fired a 2-hitter with 9 strikeouts as the Saxons stopped No. 10-seeded Hoffman Estates for the third time this season, 5-1, in the semifinal of the Hawks Class 4A regional.

    Rolling Meadows exceeded its seed. The No. 17-seeded Mustangs edged No. 16 Streamwood 25-21, 14-25, 25-16 to earn another match in the boys volleyball postseason, this one against Lake Park on Tuesday as the regional semifinal rounds are contested at Westminster Christian in Elgin.

  • Prospect’s Reese strikes again downstate May 24, 2014 9:52 PM
    Prospect senior Erin Reese proved that lightning does strike twice. After hitting a school-record 150 feet in the discus in early April, Reese settled back into the mid-130s for rest of the season. But on a sun-splashed Saturday at the IHSA Class 3A state finals at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium, Reese caught lightning in a bottle for the second time. On her second throw in the finals, Reese unleashed a beauty, hitting 146-01 to propel her to the Class 3A discus title.

    The path to East Peoria for the 2014 IHSA state softball tourney begins today for six area teams who are competing in play-in games for Class 4A regionals. Regional semifinals take place on Tuesday and Wednesday with most championships on Saturday. One exception is the Cary-Grove regional where the title game is scheduled for Friday.

  • Hoffman Estates downs Rolling Meadows May 23, 2014 9:41 PM
    The Hoffman Estates softball team started Friday’s Mid-Suburban League crossover game with an act of kindness. Before celebrating their own Senior Day, the Hawks presented flowers to the five seniors on the opposing Rolling Meadows team. Then the four Hoffman seniors were honored. Moments later, all four of those Hawks made a major contribution to a 10-4 triumph which gave Hoffman its 15th win, the most in coach Lindsey’s Hamma nine seasons.

  • Schaumburg pushes to sectional crown May 24, 2014 12:32 AM
    Schaumburg won its first boys track and field sectional title since 1983 by prevailing when pushed. Take the 800-meter relay, for instance. The Saxons entered Friday’s Class 3A Bartlett sectional held at Memorial Field in Elgin as the clear favorite with the best seed time, but a bad handoff tested their composure and their coach’s nerves.

     
  • Palatine relay qualifies first May 23, 2014 11:12 PM
    Palatine took second in the 3,200 relay at last year’s Class 3A girls track state finals. The Pirates are looking for a bit more this year. Conant senior Jennifer Donnell also is setting herself up for a big finish, in both the shot put and discus. There was plenty of action at the Class 3A girls track state preliminaries on Friday at O’Brien Stadium, and the Pirates’ relay and Donnell’s throws highlighted the day.
